Yes the internals were also upgraded, I believe the first year of the 4r was 1993 or 4 in cars, the first year in the 4x4 version was 96 in the explorer I believe, and they were fully upgraded by 1998
The trans then became the 4r75 and continued to get upgraded behind the 4.6L engine. Some of the 4r75 parts can be used to upgrade the 4r70w as well......
