I had one muffler on my dodge 4.9 pickup. Was quiet but growled and flowed incredibly well.

I have no idea what it was, it was on the truck when I bought it.

I want to put a single muffler on my 5.0. Has headers and no cats but that is all, no cam or other flow tricks.

I personally have NEVER bought a new muffler. When I was a kid I got cherry bombs off of friends, side pipes on a pontiac astre with a 231 V6 swap (was dangerous) and my mustang already had some sort of exhaust on it.

If I'm going to get ONE muffler, I want it to flow and be RELATIVELY quiet, what should I buy? Plenty of solutions for duals but I don't want to bother with it for this first build.

So what flows that is one muffler?

Jim, I just replaced the exhaust system on my 2000 Ranger with the Dynomax #-39315 system which included a Dynomax muffler #-17289 that is a straight through design that they call ultra flow, & is quieter then the JBA system that was on the truck before. It's really going to be all in what you want. For your build your just running a stock 302 with a single exhaust. This muffler question is like asking about tires. Your going to get a million different answers. With performance not being a issue I would go more towards sound. Any muffler will fit and work. So its left to sound. And using 4 and 6 cylinder trucks for a base line isnt going to tell you what you want. Go on YouTube and listen to different v8 Mustangs with different mufflers. I'm sure as your looking you will find v8 rangers on there. I've always ran flowmaster mufflers on everything. I like the look of the muffler the sound and the quality. Whitey has a Gibson catback which I do not like. It fits great but doesn't sound any better then a stock exhaust. My 06 has a flowmaster catback. Has a deep throaty sound fits great. Mike69 has a dynomax. My wifes old sport trac had a magnaflow. If you went with a single inlet dual outlet muffler I would give you a nice flowmaster. But really it's in what you want and how loud you want it to be. But I would out rule exhaust flow. For what your building flow isnt going to be an issue. I mean if flow and maximum performance was your goal I dont think you would be running a single exhaust with cats. If your going to research YouTube for different sounds stay with the 302 Fords with a stock engine. Any performance build will sound different as will different makes of engines. Hopefully this helps you Jim.

I would suggest a DynoMax Muffler Turbo Muffler... but I suggest two of them and running dual exhaust.

My first 5.0 Conversion has a thrown together exhaust, local Exhaust Shop bent the pipes, I supplied the Turbo Muffles and it ended up sounding great.ot too much
Idled and ran DD pretty quiet, but put the pedal to the metal and it would bark really nice but not too loud.

As black06xlt stated, we all will have different suggestions, but a Turbo Muffler design should work no matter what the brand and should be available off the Web or at your local parts store.

Now... back to dual exhaust, why aren't you going two exhaust pipes ?
A dual pipe system is one of the basic add-ons and should give you a little more power and mpg, without a lot of hoop-la !

Yup you would have to crook around the driver side (where my tank is) and resume the duals after the tank, would probably be easier to put 2 mufflers side by side up where the original goes and have both exhaust exit to the right. I'll learn enough from this adventure to make a decision on the next one.

I'm thinking of eliminating the spare tire, you could certainly use that as a muffler area. I can't get the spare off on any of my current trucks and if I could they are not the right size anyway.

Exactly how I did the '88 STX, both pipes down the passenger side, wasn't a problem.
Both pipe exited behind the rear wheel on that side also; too much happening on the driver's side.

Looked good, a little different with the two pipes but it did catch people attention, asking if it was a "Ricer" move adding a two pipe extension.

If you ditch the spare you can put a fuel cell there and get rid of the long tank. Should have plenty of room then. I like my exhaust to dump behind the rear tires. I'm just paranoid some fluid may create a traction issue. Oil and antifreeze are really slippery at 55mph

I like the fuel cell idea. Money doesn't permit it for the first project but it is a great idea.

I am scoring a flowmaster 40 series barely used, 3" in offset but it has 2 outs. For the price I'll put up with it. I'll check ohio law first but I want to exit in front of the passenger wheel for convenience. 2 pipes too for convenience not to look cool, it will be easier than a collector.

I bought some more exhaust pieces, I have enough to create the exhaust up to the muffler now.

I'm ordering stainless bungs for the O sensors today, I'm going to weld them equal length from the header outlet after the first part of the exhaust is welded.

I also scored a radiator shroud, I didn't keep the original for some reason and the 4.0 shroud would have had to be hacked. The 5.0 radiator is over an inch below the 4.0 but there is nothing under the ranger to stop it.

I slotted the trans crossmember to have some adjustment. I haven't tightened the trans or the motor mounts yet in case I need to move a half inch front or back for clearance on "something".

The U joint is in, man does it look unusual LOL but it will do the job.

Hopefully by the weekend I'll be running the return line and the trans lines. The 2000 ranger was a returnless fuel system and the 97 motor had a return. A collective decision was made to run a return line to the filler tube. I have to buy some line for the transmission oil lines I'll use that for the return and weld a fitting on the filler tube. Just kidding about welding the filler tube :) I would have liked to seen your eyes when you read that though.

Usually return lines come back to a swirl pot - there is nothing wrong with welding to a fuel tank neck - as long as the tank is full of water ....

Welded my filler neck on my 67 Plymouth but it was off the tank and on a bench. If you did it while it was still attached to the tank you'd have a black ranger instead of green and some parts might be up in the trees. Lol

How do you like that system? There is a guy near me selling one still in the box for $90. Looks like it's pretty easy bolt on installation. Is it loud at all? I like a little rumble, but not teeth vibrating, unable to talk to my passenger loud.

Kent, I like the system & the sound. It has a little low throaty rumble & it is quieter then the JBA system that was on my truck before.

I had to google swirl pot. Expensive. I will have to google the function too lol.

Anyhow there is already a return line as close as the fuel filter on a ... returnless system. Problem is the pressure regulator is in the tank at the other end of the return tube.

The fuel filter is the key, 2 fittings in the back one in the front. Some people put the old style fuel filter in (one in one out) and run the return to the second orphaned line... but you have to take the tank off (or lift the bed slightly) and remove the pump to remove the regulator. I looked at my tank straps, aint happening.
