A few months ago I replaced the rear frame section on my 06 4x4. Many Rangers are scrapped due to this issue. But with a little work you can easily replace the rear half of the frame. I'm going to put together a small how-to on this as it is an easy job to do. Anyone with a jack jack stands grinder and basic hand tools can do this in their driveway can do this in a weekend.

Removing the bed bolts can be a little tuff but I've learned if you smack the bolt head with a hammer a few times the bolts will break loose. After removing the bed place jack stands under the truck just below the rear cab mounts. The remove all parts such as as gas tank rear axle and springs bumper and lines and hoses. The next step is the time consuming part and a pain in the ass. Theres 16 total rivets that hold the front spring hangers on along with holding both frame sections together. Grind the rivet heads down flush and know the rivets out. And remove the rear frame section. As in the picture I cut my frame off just behind the hangers just to get it out of the way.

With the help of a friend or an engine hoist slide the new frame in place.

I used grade 8 1/2"x1 1/4" bolts to bolt everything together. Reinstall all lines hoses wires and rear springs and axle.

Reinstall the gas tank exhaust bumper and bed and your done. It took me about a total of 9 hours from start to finish. I did use a torch instead of a grinder. But not everyone has a set of torches. Yes its easier to just replace your whole truck but why spend that kind of money. With buying the frame from a salvage yard bolts and paint I had roughly $200 in mine. And it's an easy job that anyone can take on

I realize this is an old post but if you still get notifications via email you will hopefully be alerted about this reply!

I need to do the same thing to a 2001 Ranger Extended Cab with 3rd and 4th half doors 4x4 XLT!

In your research did you know if the frame is universal between a 2x4 and 4x4 frame on the rear half?

Also where exactly did you cut or separate the frame and how did you join it back together where it was cut or separated.

I am looking at a 1998 Extended Cab 2x4 full truck on GovDeals but have not yet found info about whether the frame rear halves will match upor if I can use the full frame and transfer my cab, bed and drivetrain including front 4x4 components to that ehole 2x4 frame if the my frontend 2001 components can be bolted up to the 2x4 frame.

I got the truck site unseen from a friend and aftrr getting it I found out it was from up north and the frame is completely rusted through in places particularly back by the rear leaf dpring brackets. On the passenger side the back end of the frame actually has broken off behind the leaf spring shackle bracket and it looks like the frame will break further forward by the rear bracket as well so I could also use the wole frame from the other truck if it is compatible!

I sure would appreciate your input and insight is you have any advice for me on the correct compatible frames and years with a 2001 Ext Cab 4x4 Ranger!

Hi black06xlt

I realize this is an old post but can you steer me where to find info on compatible frames for a 2001 Ext Cab XLT 4x4.

I acquired one with a badly rusted frame that needs replaced.

I have not yet found a resource for info on if a 2x4 ext cab truck frame is swappable and can accept the 4x4 components to be put on it, what other years and trucks would have either a whole compatible frame or even if the back half measurements and attatchment points are compatible.

Also did you cut your frame?

Or, did it separate at that point?

Where exactly did you separate it and the replacement?

How did you bolt the frame halves back together? Did you have to use flat plates of metal with bolts or have to weld plates on the to attach them back together.

Yes Black06XLT is still here, pops in once a week or so. Yes the rear half of the 2WD ex cab is the same as the 4WD, it's just the front that is different.

Now a single cab, the rear half is different between the 2 bed lengths, but the ex cabs only came with the short bed.

When you get the bed off the separation place is obvious, pretty much where the front shackles are right behind the cab.

Have you bought one yet and where do you live? there's a cool dozen of us here that have some resources just sayin. Welcome to F-R!

Does anyone know which Rivets Ford used to put them together in the factory? I just purchased an 11 that was popped in the rear and needs a new rear section. Yes, I get that bolts are easier. it's just that I like to do things as they were originally done.
