Thank you :)  $2,500. No rust, good title or at least I hope so. I have a title but the previous owner passed, I have a certificate of death (kinda weird, I felt awkward buying the truck from this couple) so hopefully it's fine. Runs, drives, stops.

Kinda don't wanna take this truck apart.....

Drive it for a couple days, get a temp tag and take care of the title first. It takes a couple days to figure out what course you want to take on a project.

Then if you are like me the course changes several times. A week.

When I get the title I get new plates to go with it. Not temp ones but the real ones. It smokes a little, probably might do a tune up. Needs tires....i don't know if I wanna put money into it

Title is a bust. Appears the previous owner didn't change it into his name before he passed, so I need to get a bonded title. No biggie, or at least it doesn't sound like it. We'll see next week sometime

Some states it is easy, some not. It is almost impossible in Ohio, it's like a 9 step process. You have one with a title right? Wheels turning.

The new one HAS a title, it was just never switched over. The lady at the tax office called it “title jumping” which is something I've never heard of. No biggie, at least this ones worth getting the title to lol

The first truck was a lesson in feelings for Rangers. I still have my green one, 5.0 dropped in, never turned the key. Wasn't my first Ranger, was my first viable project.

Well guys, it seems the truck knew I was indecisive and made the decision for me. I drove around the block, nothing crazy, max speed was 45. It over heated twice, started knocking like crazy, would die when put in drive or reverse, idled SUPER low, aaaaannnndddd the trans started smoking. Just driving around the block. I think she's ready for her new life.

Removed the bed. Much easier without all the dang rust. Even underneath the bed has just got light surface rust. More impressed.

Also, BRAND NEW FUEL TANK!!

Roll cage: Cab Mounted vs Frame Mounted. Opinions? I'm wanting the roll cage (4 point, hoop behind the seats with bars extending to the bed. I'll try to find a picture) for frame stiffening. When I took the bed off the newer ranger it was all loosey goosey and flexed way out when standing on the corner of the frame. And the new engine will have 2-3x more power than the original.

If frame mounted, do I need body mounts? I think I read/heard somewhere that a frame mounted roll cage basically negates the use of a body mount. Not sure, need help

You could box in the back half to stiffen the frame if you weld.

Good point, actually didn't think of that. Probably cheaper too

Do I REALLLLYY need to powder coat the frame, or will a good sanding with a wire wheel and grinder with primer and good spray paint be enough? Finding it difficult saving and keeping 1,000 to have the frame powder coated but I want this done right and look great.

POR15 is a paint over rust product that is intended to go on frames and dries HARD. There are complaints that it is so hard it cant flex so it cracks. Same with Southern Polyurethanes (SPI) #6620 Black epoxy primer, but if scuffed it can be top coated.

Doing it right depends on your situation. If you are restoring a vehicle its frowned upon to use a paint over rust product. If you need salt protection one of products would help.

Do some research before you decide. There is a lot of debate over frame coverings

I don't live in the rust belt but when I pulled my  bed to replace the fuel pump I wire brushed the affected areas. Then I used Rust Bullet which had a whitish gray color. After it cured I used up a Dupli-color of Tuxedo Black spray can that I had. The spray paint was just to cover the light color of the rust inhibitor. The spare tire holder was in sad shape but I was able to save it.

Good suggestions and good points, I'm just wanting to protect the frame for the long run and make it look nice. I want the truck to last for a while, preferably for a lifetime or two. I have FINALLY decided on the engine. I've priced out all of the parts I would need for a rebuild, and I'm going for the 2.3 turbo. What I'm going to do is over build the motor, forged pistons/h-beam rods, might stroke the 2.3 to a 2.5, good head/cam, high volume oil pump with a bigger sump (on the fence about that. I've read that the high volume pump will suck the sump dry) and then turbo it. The reason for overbuilding the motor is I want the engine to make decent power on its own and even more with a turbo. Don't want a great big huge turbo, just a smaller one that comes on at about 2,500-3,000 rpms. I want the engine to have a redline at 8k, I won't always be at redline but would love to be able to rev it out. There's a lot of wants, I know I'll have to compromise, but that's the goal. I've got 2 blocks in the barn right now, so I figured I might as well use 'em! What I learn from the built 2.3 I'll use for the other one and stick it something cool and different. We'll see what happens, saving to buy a house at the end of the year but if that falls through the girlfriend gave me to go-ahead to buy truck parts. I truly am loved lol. :-P:frd

Parts list for the build, I'm sure I've forgotten some stuff. Also, everything is rounded way up. On the expensive stuff (head, intake, rods, pistons etc. are rounded up at least $100 due to shipping/and covid potentially making prices go up)
