First light grey coat is the heavy primer

The Black Stuff is the urethane sealer

You can see how much work was put into these panels to make them so flat and prepped for the color

Look at that blue metallic!!
After they cure , possibly in the sunshine today. Next is cut and buff to get any dirt and debris out of the clear coat. They will “solvent pop” for the next 2-3 days and he will be buffing them out

Cut and polish of the clear coat on one bedside complete

Other side half way done

Parts spent time in the sun!
The metal bed is coming into paint shop next

They are not absolutely perfect but they are waaaaay better then I could do

The clear coat is being cut by hand with a variety of sandpaper all the way to 3000 grit and polished thereafter
This removes any dirt or debris from the clear coat
Now that the parts are painted you can really smell the fiberglass still curing underneath
The paint contains a ton of “flexiblizer” to
Work well on the glass panels
The paint spent some time in the hot sun today to help cure and “solvent pop”
As he puts it

Cut and buff of all panels is complete! The metal bed is now in the paint area to get some blue
I cannot believe how well the paint turned out!!

My attention has been turned to finishing up the twin tail pipes for the exhaust

I'll get some pictures of the progress!!!

Truck is running and driving, bed has been painted ( blue where it needed)

The truck will be DRIVEN from my home shop to the bottom of our road (2 miles of off road testing)! Loaded on trailer and re located to the city/paint/detail shop (15 miles )
The fiberglass and bed will be final installed and fitted.

I have a ton of small things to finish and lots of testing to do patience is key here!

His factory tailgate and fuel door will be going back on as well as his bed mat.

The interior of the bed will get line x and all undersides of the bed and glass are being coated with spray on bedliner
All metal edges cleaned up /treated before the glass is installed. I also have to put his 07 bed wiring / tail lights into this 02 bed

All the details are coming but for now
Time to get to work

I am super super excited to actually drive this thing. Nerves are wrecked, but luckily for me I am used to being the test dummy for first drives like this. I've been through it so many times. It's like standing in line at a very scary rollercoaster knowing you are up next

Some updates before she can leave this shop and head to the town shop for final testing, setup and polish we needed to finish a few major things

First she was pushed outside and washed again

The rear bumper and hitch install not easy
The Kartek shackle flip brackets live directly where the hitch used to mount. They are also right where the factory bumper brackets reside.
Much thought and then some cardboard templating and I have them fitting

The hitch will actually be welded to both Kartek brackets so basically the rear spring hangers are also the hitch. The hitch acting like a rear crossmember keeping things tight and straight.

The bumper brackets had to be “windowed” to clear everything, now factory bumper can bolt in and out. These pics from mock up all parts cleaned, prepped welded painted and then re installed

At this point the rear king shocks were final
Installed as well as the driveshafts

Brakes are plumbed, air line for the arb locker went in, the e brake cables are being fabricated and more

You can see the exhaust tail pipe also being mocked up. A $30 aftermarket ranger tailpipe was used as a guide

Fog lights final mounted tight, drivers broken mirror glass replaced, winch final wired, lots and lots of little things happening

First up the tow hitch

Lots of metal had to go away as the Kartek spring hanger is where the hitch used to mount
Template was used to make the marks after careful
Measuring then things cut out with grinder and surfaces prepped for welding

This is how the hitch will clear the bracket before it is then welded to the bracket

I have a spare set of Kartek hangers as my next project will also be setup with this rear Chevy 63” spring and inverted shackle

Test fit off the truck

Now the bumper she needed a large window cut on both sides
Small plate will be added back for strength

That's how she fits
Now to transfer to the other side

Bumper hitch finally dry fitted
Fun to do by yourself! My arms got quite a workout here
My brain and the grinder also had quite a workout for this one, there is a lot going on at the end of the frame horns now! Really happy with how this turned out

So I turned my attention to building twin custom tailpipes. The exhaust has been 2.50 up to this point and is 3” where it exits the spintec mufflers. I will be necking down to 2.25” for the tailpipes
The aftermarket $30 tailpipe I ordered is kinda “chincey”'origialnally thought I could save some work by using bits from a couple of these but I don't like the kinks and the pipe is like 1-3/4 in places. So I simply used it for Mock up. Don't worry plenty of rangers come through this shop that will need a new tailpipe. The parts will get used

And the start of the tail pipes

I love my mini Milwaukee band saw!

Lots of plumbing wiring and little brackets to fabricate, final touches
Stay tuned
She's running driving stopping shifting test phase

Hitch is welded to the rear shackle hangers
All exposed surfaces welded brackets prepped and painted

The hitch now has 14 bolts that holds it on

Exhaust installed final
Plenty of space/ options for exhaust tips once the bed and bedsides are in place

Coming out of the mufflers the tail pipes are mounted with in and there is excess pipe. Down the road this exhaust may get cutouts so I left a good location and plenty of material to work with

Interesting way to install the hitch.  What was the reason for that?  Not a Ranger hitch or??

Winch final wired
Arb plumbed and wired
Alarm install mostly complete

The alarm I have been researching and gathering info in prep for install for many months. Viper/directed only wants these installed at a certified dealer so they do not provide instructions instead it is up to the internet to provide the 411
I will not be posting details of the alarm install for obvious reasons, but I can tell you this thing has more wires and modules then a Tesla

If all goes well I'm planning to drive her down road to trailer and then to town for final everything, just a “few”
Weeks behind here but it is happening now

t

Arb air line was run from compressor, under truck, down the frame around fuel tank and to the rear axle

The apex 12000 super overkill for a ranger winch is *****in! I love this winch. Anyways I had to final mount it and wire it up. It came with a really nice battery cut off switch. I took the time to make it weather tight and chose the perfect mounting spot. It was mounted to the truck with one small hole drilled and one of its existing through bolts

3 coats of permatex rust treatment also used on fender bolts to stop surface rust

This is how you do a 12000 winch by yourself, with a cart and some careful planning!

Fog lights rigid mounted, the side shooter leds clear the bumper perfectly. Should provide good visibility!

It was necessary because of the chevy 64" leaf spring. The rear leaf shackle was relocated

Only one battery for now.  The battery switch in the engine bay is for the winch

See the careful wiring of winch power cables? Power cables for winch run directly to battery, using 2006 ranger battery terminals

See the front camera? Also wired and mounted in the perfect location

The arb system power wires were also run
The arb fuse found its home by the airbox
The power wire was run to the power junction box

Winch final mounted!! Wooohoooo

Don't celebrate too early I had to remove the bolts again in order to fit the grill

Love the dual trans cooler mod, looks factory

There's “ace” the dog sticking her head in every picture again

The affordable bumper gives good access to the winch bolts and parts

See the rust treatment convert that surface rust to hard black metal

Bumper top bar mounted
Winch, fairlead, rope and hook installed. Front camera mounted. Moving onto skid plate. Black paint / peeling powder coat on the used superlift bracket / on suspension will be addressed during final detail buff and polish

Engine was filled with 5 quarts of 5-30w full synth. It has been draining for a while because we had gas in the crank case from all that cranking with the bad injector. Oil will be changed one more time before delivery

Almost time to schedule an alignment appointment!

The viper alarm install then sucked up my next few days. Keyless entry, voice command, window controls, auto start and much more involved in this alarm system
Most of it is wired, the rest happens today and over the weekend. It has to be setup online, this should be interesting. The alarm is one of the biggest hurdles of this build. I am glad it is almost over

I have a lot of setup to do, cameras, alarm, audio, lights and suspension
