Decided 100% to finish it, not as a custom racing beast but as a daily fun driver.
I'm going to put things in this post as I discover them, and assemble at the end for one of the how to articles I've been planning for almost 2 years now.
First let it be written LOL I started with a 2000 (late 99 build) single cab short bed 2WD coil spring born with a 2.5 4 cyl and an automatic.
Putting in a 5.0 from a 1997 mountaineer, and a 4R70W automatic from a 1996 2WD explorer. In hindsight would have been much quicker to find a 96 or 97 expo with 5.0 and 2WD :(.
I chose the 1997 knowing and wanting 2 things, it did not have "P" heads and 4 CYL Rangers in 2000 did not have PATS, neither did 1997 expo/mountaineer. Again hindsight tells me it would have probably been easier to deal with PATS than fuel pressure differences, but here I am now. I wanted the non P heads originally because of the tougher valve springs, I was going to put a cam in but ditched that idea early on.
All these are lessons learned.
Keep the trans rear mount from the original trans. It has the extra height and bolts right up to the 4R70W
You will have to slot the trans mount holes in the crossbeam toward the front of the vehicle.
You can use the original driveshaft from the Ranger, but need a yoke to adapt to the 4R70W and a special universal joint, currently Neapco carries a great selection of conversion joints. Make sure the yoke is the right outside diameter and is not sloppy in the rear trans bearing.
The original 4 CYL motor mounts are the only stock ones I found with the correct angle. I ended up with custom mount plates, bought RickRangerZ plates from E-bay, close but no cigar. I don't know what was different most of the ones he sold to were born with a V6. I had to slot them and the driver side needed to go up an additional 1/4 inch. I did buy V6 mounts as suggested but they were the wrong angle. In hindsight it would have been easier to make my own.
You must purchase a stamped metal oil pan if your explorer came with a cast aluminum pan.
More to come, I'll edit this as things progress.Last edited on Fri May 10th, 2019 04:31 pm by JAMMAN
