Dragging it out of the yard, I have the lift for 2 days so putting it in the air, making complete evaluation as to if I want to continue with this at all or scrap it and shift focus to one of my other trucks.

Checking out driveshaft needs and exhaust needs. I have to run new transmission lines also, and the tranny needs a 3/8 shim under the support to level out the motor.

I will make a decision in 2 days to kill or finish.

5.0 is real ugly but still in there. Many wasp nests hope they didn't get in the headers.

Word to the wise: if you start a project don't let it sit for years before attempting to finish it.

Really good news on the driveshaft. I measured before and thought "no way" but all I have to do is put the yoke on which fits the trans  just fine.  There was a distance from the mount to the back of the trans that I measured while they were sitting side by side.. it seemed identical and it looks to be true. This is better luck than usual for me.

I'm about 80% sure I want to finish it up. Right now I couldn't ask 500 for it the way it sits and I have over 2K in to it between parts and paying people to help. If I drove it for a year it would make it worth it. And a lot of fun could be had during the adventure.

You cant quit after 4 years. That's like paying to store stuff then deciding after 4 years you dont want it. Just do it!!!

Decided 100% to finish it, not as a custom racing beast but as a daily fun driver.

I'm going to put things in this post as I discover them, and assemble at the end for one of the how to articles I've been planning for almost 2 years now.

First let it be written LOL I started with a 2000 (late 99 build) single cab short bed 2WD coil spring born with a 2.5 4 cyl and an automatic.

Putting in a 5.0 from a 1997 mountaineer, and a 4R70W automatic from a 1996 2WD explorer. In hindsight would have been much quicker to find a 96 or 97 expo with 5.0 and 2WD :(.
I chose the 1997 knowing and wanting 2 things, it did not have "P" heads and 4 CYL Rangers in 2000 did not have PATS, neither did 1997 expo/mountaineer. Again hindsight tells me it would have probably been easier to deal with PATS than fuel pressure differences, but here I am now. I wanted the non P heads originally because of the tougher valve springs, I was going to put a cam in but ditched that idea early on.

All these are lessons learned.

Keep the trans rear mount from the original trans. It has the extra height and bolts right up to the 4R70W

You will have to slot the trans mount holes in the crossbeam toward the front of the vehicle.

You can use the original driveshaft from the Ranger, but need a yoke to adapt to the 4R70W and a special universal joint, currently Neapco carries a great selection of conversion joints. Make sure the yoke is the right outside diameter and is not sloppy in the rear trans bearing.

The original 4 CYL motor mounts are the only stock ones I found with the correct angle. I ended up with custom mount plates, bought RickRangerZ plates from E-bay, close but no cigar. I don't know what was different most of the ones he sold to were born with a V6. I had to slot them and the driver side needed to go up an additional 1/4 inch. I did buy V6 mounts as suggested but they were the wrong angle. In hindsight it would have been easier to make my own.

You must purchase a stamped metal oil pan if your explorer came with a cast aluminum pan.

More to come, I'll edit this as things progress.

I have also made some changes to my intended build after preparing and saving up. I think I've simplified it too. Looking forward to seeing your build completed

Well it isn't going to be pretty but it will be fun! Thanks-

And black06, jalep is still in my garage safe from rain and crap. I work on it a little every week but yes once again I have shifted focus. I need to put a passenger seat in it so I can drive around while my son watches forscan on a lap top. Determined to nail which sensor is causing it to buck. Different thread dude LOL.

I posted a muffler question in another thread. I am working on a custom crossover pipe (Thank you Shane for being an excellent welder) that will mimic the original explorer setup minus cats. Once it is in place I'll weld the bungs on for the upstream O sensors which seem to be the same on MANY years of expos and rangers except for harness length according to the part numbers.

It is a little easier than I thought actually, I bought that walker pipe and are using most of it though in pieces.

So I want to run a single muffler, looking for suggestions in the other thread.

410custom does a single pipe exhaust for the V8 swap

I am scoring a flowmaster 40 series barely used, 3" in offset but it has 2 outs. For the price I'll put up with it. I'll check ohio law first but I want to exit in front of the passenger wheel for convenience. 2 pipes too for convenience not to look cool, it will be easier than a collector.

I bought some more exhaust pieces, I have enough to create the exhaust up to the muffler now.

I'm ordering stainless bungs for the O sensors today, I'm going to weld them equal length from the header outlet after the first part of the exhaust is welded.

I also scored a radiator shroud, I didn't keep the original for some reason and the 4.0 shroud would have had to be hacked. The 5.0 radiator is over an inch below the 4.0 but there is nothing under the ranger to stop it.

I slotted the trans crossmember to have some adjustment. I haven't tightened the trans or the motor mounts yet in case I need to move a half inch front or back for clearance on "something".

The U joint is in, man does it look unusual LOL but it will do the job.

Hopefully by the weekend I'll be running the return line and the trans lines. The 2000 ranger was a returnless fuel system and the 97 motor had a return. A collective decision was made to run a return line to the filler tube. I have to buy some line for the transmission oil lines I'll use that for the return and weld a fitting on the filler tube. Just kidding about welding the filler tube :) I would have liked to seen your eyes when you read that though.

Some pics of the latest small steps. Looks like the crown vic portion of the Neapco 2-3050 worked fine:

And here are the slots necessary in the crossmember for adjustment.

With the trans mount from the 4 cyl trans bolted in, the whole assembly was raised to the point it looks relatively "normal". After the driveshaft proves to fit I'll throw the radiator and shroud in to check alignment with the fan. I have seen people do this last and end up having to notch the shroud to clear the fan usually on top, or scrap the original fan for an electric.

If it doesn't line up for me I'm putting spacers under the trans mount till the fan lines up right. At this point I could still spacer the motor mounts also for alignment.

I would notch the shroud to avoid any problems with drive line angle

I'll adjust the drive line angle when I put the 4.10 LS in.

Actually with the current spacer they are virtually parallel (output shaft/pinion shaft). Hopefully it is close enough as is. I'm sure those baby springs are going to flex a little.

Driveshaft fits perfectly. Bolts in trans mount only sit about 1/4" in to the slots I made so plenty of adjustment left either way.

I'm dreading buying transmission fluid have you seen the price lately?

Well I made a decision after looking at the entire motor assembly cocked a few degrees.
The left motor mount will be swapped for the correct one which I have now. It has been a trip but the entire project was derailed by one thing all this time.... one random bad packaging error when I bought the first mounts. Actually the second I bought explorer mounts the first time. Second time I bought the right one according to the package but the mount inside was an expo v8 mount go figure.
