Maybe the sports and FX4 did have 31 splines lets do some more digging. I was told they never did, so we shall see!

I was also told that Ford never sold a 4.0L BII and then I have seen two of them in the years since then that were indeed factory 1990 Bronco II's with a factory 4.0 so....lots of things are possible.

I know the late model FX4 transmission and t case shifter boots are worth a bunch of $$$ on ebay if you can find them which tells me they did indeed come with a manual t case.

I guess as I start doing more and more Rangers this will all clear up, I have been doing Explorers for the last 10 years while my stepsons did the rangers, now we are all doing them together. I was told by them that no late models had the large tube 8.8 and I believe them but by no means are we the authority or anything we just do our little piece of the pie

My factory axle in my 2001 single cab 4.0sohc, 4x4 is an 8.8" 4:10 TracLok limited slip with drum brakes. It's a rare truck in a single cab 4x4 with the 4.0 and was special ordered. I've seen less than 8 or 9 of these trucks equipped this way and I've been in the Ranger community continuously for over 25 years. But lots of Rangers came with "small bearing" 8.8" (28 spline) with drum brakes.

"Ford Ranger 8.8-Inch Axle Usage:
Ford began using the 8.8-Inch axle in Rangers around 1986 on 'incomplete vehicles' aka 'chassis cabs', but the 8.8-Inch axles didn't become common in the Ford Rangers until the introduction of the 4.0L V6 in mid-1990. All 4.0L Ford Rangers are equipped with 8.8-Inch axles."

1998-2011 4—4 supercab Rangers regardless of powerplant are frequently equipped with 8.8-Inch axles. We've seen a 2001 Ford Ranger 3.0L with a 8.8-inch rear and 4.10 factory gears.

Ford 8.8-Inch Axle Shaft Splines:
Ford Ranger – The Ford Ranger 8.8-Inch axle used 28-spline shafts. The exception is the 2002 FX4 and 2003-2007 FX4 Level II models which had 31-spline shafts."

A lot of early V6 Rangers of various years also came factory with the 7.5" rear axle. My one owner 89 Ranger single cab has the 2.9L V6, 5spd, manual transfer case, and a 7.5" open diff rear end.

The FX4 LVLII Rangers came with the 31 spline "big bearing" 8.8" with a Torsen limited slip, and drum brakes, for at least two years (02-03) without a doubt.  The 02-03 were also the years for the manual shift transfer case. Many other Rangers after 2003 also came with the 31 spline 8.8 axle.

I had a 2002 Ranger FX4 LVLII 31 spline 8.8" shipped to me for my 87 V8 swap Ranger. I wanted the Torsen L/S and 31 spline because I knew I'd be beating the crap out of my truck daily, and I do.

"Ford 8.8-Inch Axle Bearings:

2000 Ford Ranger 8.8-Inch 28-spline axle bearing ID= 1.399″, OD= 2.2948″ (1563 series bearing)

Ford Ranger FX4 8.8-Inch 31-spline axle bearing ID= 1.1618″, OD= 2.5333″ (1559 series bearing)"

"Ford 8.8-Inch Axle Disc brakes: The 2010-2011 Ford Ranger rear axles come with disc brakes."

"Ford 8.8-Inch Axle Width Differences:

1990-1992 Ford Ranger 8.8-Inch Axle – 56-1/2 inches
1993-2009 Ford Ranger 8.8-inch Axle – 58-1/2 inches"

I think you have validated enough of the off site data with personal experience to make it usable, I will include parts in the articles I'll be assembling when the cold hits and I have more time :)

Thank you and I slid you some extra rep points :)

The 8.8 31 spline drum brake also came in the sport tracs 01-03 so that would make sense

If you guys want 31 splines and disc brakes it sure is easy enough to get, I sell ALOT of explorer rear axles, 3.73 and 4.10 open and limited slip...there are plenty of these out there to be had

Customer picked up his V8 last night, very happy. She is smooth up to 80+ mph now with the new driveshaft and new rear axle.

Next up he is planning some headers and a full exhaust
I did get a sound clip of the exhaust, I will have to upload it

New Hitch (from 2007 truck we crushed)

New driveshaft 48.5" yoke to yoke

Keep in mind that the Exploder 8.8" axle is also one inch wider than the Ranger 8.8" in total.

Ranger 8.8" = 58 1/2" width

Explorer 8.8" = 59 1/2" width

83-92 Ranger 7.5" axles are 1" shorter than 93+ Ranger 7.5" axles - this can create problems when swapping a newer Ranger 8.8" into an early Ranger. Wheel choice may be affected. (wheel offset)

In my case the width was quite different. 87 Ranger 7.5" axle removed to install a later model Ranger 8.8" - so the overall width (from wheel mount surface to wheel mount surface) went from 56 1/2" to 58 1/2" and it was very noticeable. Had I used an Exploder axle, the width would have been 59 1/2" - or 3" wider than the 7.5" axle, in total.
