Never hurts to ask before I pull the trigger at a local ski shop.........

WTB - Solomon QST 92 skis, 169cm long, with a quality binding (example -
Salomon STH2 WTR 13).  If you have a pair in exceptionally nice condition and for whatever reason want to unload, we need to talk. TIA

Play it Again Sports is actually just a couple miles from my house but unfortunately this model (and now another one thanks to demo day last Friday) are both quite new and very popular, so the market is super tight. Thanks for the idea, the search continues.

*Edit: I tried to rep ya, apparently it's not possible to do that more than once to the same member. :-/

Ya I wasn't sure if it was the brand  specifically or THOSE particular ones; I have a snowboard I've never used somewhere in storage and have never skied before. The lil woman wants to get us involved in some cross country skiing as of late, but will have to see.

And Ha, the thought alone has value, I added the 10 points in my head tho ;)

Matter resolved, case closed and thanks to all who looked. Hello Elan Ripstick 96, I met you last Thursday, demoed you on the mtn the next day, rode you hard and put your through the paces, you never once complained or fought back, you were playful and were even forgiving, and after four amazing runs discovered that my life simply could not go on without you in it. See you at my front door in a couple days, a ski that absolutely lives up to that model name in every possible way! :)

Glad you found some new ones!

Safe assumption that the "96" is the length of the Ski's?

Thanks! Actually the length is 174cm which I would have probably not bought had I not demoed; reason being that the "recommended" length ranger for my height and weight would have been 165-170cm. The 96mm is the waist width (width under the middle of the boot), the tip width  is 134mm and the tail width is 113mm. Together, these create a turn radius although with the side profile (rocker-camber) of the ski this radius can actually vary depending on how hard the skier is carving in a turn. It get better (or weirder), these have a left and a right ski, and for a reason (look at below pic):

This will have an effect on how they carve. There is more....no metal contributes to the stiffness (edges are, of course, metal but for another reason).

Internally, those two round, charcoal colored members near the sides are 5mm carbon rods. There is more concerning the construction; these hand made skis are super light which adds to the ability to make quick maneuvers and thus, playfulness. You might find the info in this vendor link interesting:

Learn something new everyday... Until seeing that, I would assume most ski's would be just highly planed 1x6's with pretty paint or graphix adhered to them. realizing there are more than potentially better materials, i'm just being facetious of my actual ignorance in skiing industries. :pat

I know if I let her talk me into cross country skiing, she may not know the difficulty she stirs.. lol

^^^ If she talks you into Xcountry skiing and if you're uncertain about committing to it long term, ski swap might be a good place to shop for gear. Bonus points if a percentage of the sales go to a good cause (here, 20% goes to the ski patrol at the mtn closest to me which, happens to be one of the few remaining all volunteer NSP's out there so its win-win for all). And if she does talk you into it, you can always try telemarking (talk her into that :) ), something that's always crossed my mind as it would open up a whole lot of winter terrain for fun.

So.... are the skis themselves firmer as it gets closer to the boots? Seems like that would enable that smooth arc, that nice radius you mentioned! Whatever the case, I see now, there's some serious intelligence behind thw construction!

Possibly, but I can't directly answer that one with full certainty. What I can say is that the ski length, variations in sidecuts over it's length (thus, turn radius), width, the stiffness, profile with regards to the shape of bottom surface (rocker, camber) and the intended usage all define the ski. Then comes the person using it which will impact what they shop for, this amounts to intended usage, skill level, body weight and height. Then perhaps take into consideration that these items direct the skier into a target ski length, but deviating is always fair game. Longer length typically means more stable at speed but harder to turn (and the converse applies). This is where reading reviews, looking at the reviews profile (ability, weight, etc etc) and ultimately doing a demo if at all possible really helps. FWIW, what I bought was slightly longer than the suggested length range for me and if I hadn't demoed and experienced them, I'd probably have not bought what Iv'e got now. That would probably have been a bit of a mistake, the time to fall is not when you're going 35+ mph.......

Pretty much true but the demo is, IMO, the acid test.  As an example, tables for me suggest a length of 165-170cm but the manufacturer of those Ripsticks advises a length of 174cm, and they worked great, in fact, my using them enabled me to ski better and do so with less effort. Curiously, I'm skiing on some Rossignol S86's that are 178cm long, and not having any problems other than they hate ice and will take me for a "ride" if conditions turn to that. Below is a pic I took of a pair of 178cm long skis (and quite stiff) I demoed that recommendations suggested were supposed to be a good choice. Wrong, these were so difficult to control (downright dangerous) that in the interest of not getting injured they were turned in before I had planned on doing so. Miserable product.
