I come home yesterday to find my wife's nephew in the garage with his car on jack stands and my tools all over the place. I told him it is a violation of the first degree punishable by death to use a person's tools without express direct permission from tool owner. He replied that my wife told him it was OK. She may not make it alive through this week.

He spent 5 hours on the front brakes with nothing to show. Car on stands, wheels off and that is it! He is following instructions on utube and is confident it can be done. Well, I stepped in and gave him some pointers and we removed the calipers only to find stuck slide pins. I got the pins out this morning using the help of a torch only to find out that he ordered new calipers including the mounting brackets because he thought the pins would never come out. Noobs. Never say never to a guy with a torch!

I did tell him not to install the calipers without me there. Cannot imagine the damage that could be done if not done correctly.

Anyway, I have to hand it to the kid for having the gumption to tackle it and have to hand it to him for being wise enough to use my garage as a workspace knowing he can count on me to help out.

LOL great story, I wish my nephew-in-laws had any ambition at all.

The best way to learn is to dive in and do it. I applaud the young man

Sounds like he had permission from the Government there if ya ask me [lmao] and good on him for his attempt at being self sufficient.. Feed the curiosity like you did, he'll find the gearhead illness all on his own. ;)

"Sounds like he had permission from the Government there if ya ask me [lmao] " you know who runs this house, and it ain't me. She does have the warmest, kindest heart. Sweet as they get.
The kid is really smart. Started of on the path of med school, but the chemistry bug got him and he is now getting ready to finish pharmacy school. He has never touched a wrench in his life before this, and is taking piano lessons from my wife and is now working on his own vehicle. Something is driving him, just not sure what it is.

- IF my shop was a shared shop, my tool boxes would be locked !
As stated in the first post... NO ONE SHOULD TOUCH MY TOOL WITHOUT EXPRESS PERMISSION FORM THE OWNER... ME !

The Wife knows this, the Wife knows what I would be like if she allowed anyone to use my tools.

But, my Nephew, calls me up, say his Mom told him to call me to get an idea of what to do. I go there, talk to him about what was needed and "I know he can't do it", in fact if I had to guess, I would think HIS MOM was thinking I would do the job... !
Except my Nephew has had nothing to do with me, so I explained what needed to be done and it would be best to get it towed to a Shop and have a mechanic do the work ! Mom wasn't happy... too _______ bad !

OK back on topic, Put up a sign, DO NOT TOUCH !

LoL, good Luck with that !

Kudos to your nephew for wanting to learn, but why the   didn't he ask you>?

My wife has 2 reasons not to open my shop. 1) the tools in my shop are worth almost 6 figures. 2) in order to use my shop, one of my toys has to come out. She knows better.

I don't have that problem. I have two of my son's high school buddies that contact me asking if they can come over and I supervise them doing maintenance/repairs to their vehicles. This has been going on for 7 years. Neither had a father that was mechanically inclined.

I "supervised" a radiator, hose, thermostat, and water pump replacement on a 2000 Nissan Pathfinder last weekend. The water pump was leaking, it had the original hoses, and the radiator was full of crud after 220K miles.

On the positive side I did end up with a bottle of 12 year old Spayside single malt Scotch for my supervision and use of my tools.

Got it done once the calipers came in. I showed him how on the passenger side, he did it with supervision on the driver side. 3 hours and done. Got his hands dirty and ate lunch with grease condiment on his hands. Not bad for a first timer. The kid has potential.
