Will 17 inch rims fit under the truck, and still be able to turn at all too. It is dropped a good 9 inches. Loves to even drag the front cross member, sometimes lol. The truck handles great but with 15” tires they can't hold up to serious speeds around corners. i don't want to go to a smaller tire size due to to the fact that it drags on the ground. It is a 2003 2wd. I'm sure I'm missing some important details so tell me if i am!

I had 17" bullitt wheels from an 04 GT on my old 92. They fit great. I ran 245/45/17

17's alone should fit, it's the width that'll cause problems, 17x8 or 9, depending on offset as well. As for tire size, I use a tire size calculator on Google. I type in the current size I have (235/75r15s) and then go to tirerack.com and look at what tires they have for 17's, then go and type in tire sizes to compare to my 235's and see what tires have the same height. I believe mine would be 275/55r17s.

Calculator:  https://tiresize.com/calculator/

Tires: https://www.tirerack.com/tires/sizes/results.jsp?diameter=17

Just remember to put your current tire size as the first one (size 1: Mine is the 235 and I want the 275 (size 2)) then the tire you're comparing as the second. Again, keep in mind your offset and wheel width. Let's us know what you end up deciding.

Then there is the one data point left out. The weight of the tires.

I never thought of that. What would the weight of the tires have an impact on? Stopping distance since there's more/less forward-rotating mass?

That and the truck will lose an inch of lowering or gain an inch in height depending on how you wanna view it... EVEN if the tires share the SAME overall tire diameter in the end.

How so? I don't mean to sound like I'm questioning you, but I didn't think of that either. Please explain

Because when you're measuring [correctly] for lowering or lifted applications. You measure from the center of the hub to the fender lip, not from the ground to the fender lip. So with saying that.

i.g. A plus3 for the example I'll use my old truck wheel & tire combo going from stock Ranger wheels and tire sizes (14") to OEM Explorer wheels in a 17" variety loaded with Falken Azenis RT615-K's [wicked-ass tire btw]

Now I am going to admit it is not only going to be a bit of a challenge to wrap yours and other peoples minds not familiar with how Plus sizing works but explaining it to make sense without taking a multitude of tires and wheels and actually literally measuring each change to prove it.

However, the rim size will add or subtract for that matter height without changing aspect ratio of the tire at all or by much. In the example show above you'll note that the inner circle between the tires showing the aspect ratio of the Wheel and the tires is. That distance between the center of your hub or the axle and the rim of the wheel are what change the dimensional height. Remember, the overall tire diameter is the same or withing a 2-3% which is acceptable from up to a 5% change. Sadly, I am having a hard time trying to explain this right. I will contact someone I think can explain this better in a way that I can relay it again tomorrow too.

When I did a Plus2 on my 95 Escort hatchie. I again went from a 185/70/14 to a 205/45/16. I had it lowered on Intrax springs - 2.25" drop and the Escort sat like a Bimmer E46 where the tire to wheel well gap was like 30mm or less. It looked good and wide [fat assed, lol] but it lifted the car .75" [3/4"].

Again, I will talk to my wheel guy and have explain it to me like a 4yr old so I can explain it better tomorrow. Its just really hard to explain how moving the axle itself up and down away from the ground changes thing with similar or same tire diameters/aspect ratios

I think I'm following, but yeah if you contact your wheel guy let me know. Thanks for clarifying!

Well, I'm the idiot. I want to use a set of factory explorer rims. part 6l22-1007-b Would offset and backspacing still be an issue with factory rims?

Not necessarily, but depends on tire size. Plus, you've lowered it 9" so I don't really know. You could always try, then get some wheel spacers like 1" or so. People always give them a bad rep, but you have to torque them right and then retorque after driving 500 miles. That's a whole other can of worms, and to answer your question you shouldn't have a problem if you use the right tire

Well there many factors like stated above . That calculator above is awesome for comparison purposes. Been using that one myself for years ðŸ¼ . With that . I run 15's and 17's on my ranger . 17's are more so for the events . My 17's I run are a 45 series , which is 1” shorter then my 60 series 15” wheels out back . They do match the same height as my front 50 series 15's . Now my 17x8's  are stock mustang 5spokes of a mid 2000s stang. Never really looked up actual specs of those . But the do have a sunk in look to them fender wise  . My 15x10's are a 4.5” bs which has now pushed the wheel closer to the outer fender (flush)  .
Here's a pic of a chart I use for converting bs to offset if you find wheels in metric spec or standard
