I'm still battling the installation of a new wiper motor on my old 93 Ford Ranger. I tried to follow the factory manual instructions and the videos posted on youtube but the space is so limited I can't seem to get the linkage snapped back onto the wiper motor when it's put back in the cowl. Ford says to drop the right side wiper pivot, unsnap the wiper motor crank pin clip, and reverse removal. Is there any trick to getting it on? I couldn't get it on so although we don't drive it much we've just been using rain-x. I need to get it on.

Rotate the motor arm so it reaches the wiper linkage more easily?
Are you able to get your hands in there to feel where the linkages need to go over the arm and access the spot where the clip goes?

I had been trying to get this wiper motor on for over a year and never could figure it out. I had the factory instructions but still couldn't get it in. It's a work truck so it doesn't get used daily so I wasn't worried about it. I decided to mess with it this week and I was able to get the entire think hooked back up in about 30 minutes. I put the motor on, slipped on the driver's side link, had the clip slightly on the other linkage and popped it on the crank pin. I think that's how the factory service manual said to do. But it still doesn't work. The battery could be dead since my dad doesn't drive it much. It made some clicking under the dash. The washer sprayers worked when I pused in the switch. When I'm back over there I'll check the battery. I was reading about the wiper control module. Wondering if that's what could've made the last one go out. I replaced the wiper motor about a year ago with a Cardone remanufactured and it burned out. The wiper motor literally started smoking. This one I have in there now is a brand new one. If I need the wiper control module where is it located? Where can you even find a new one?

the wiper controls are inside the multifunction switch on a 93 Ranger

Then there should be two wiper control RELAYS (these are suspect for sure)

And of course the GEM module is also a part of the equation

I would start by checking the relays
Also check your power GROUND wire near the wiper motor.... smoke = a dead short to ground usually

Update. I messed with these wipers some more. It's a 1993 Ranger so it's got a wiper governor and a 6amp circuit breaker. Before I did anything this time I just tried to turn them on without the wiper arms hooked up and everything worked normally at all speeds. I thought everything was good so I installed the wiper arms close as I could to how they are parked on my 1998 Ranger since there's no lines on the windshield like on my Dakota and I didn't have anything to measure with me. Well then I tried to operate the wipers again and instead of wiping correctly they went down further on the cowl and quit. After that I took off the arms and tried it without them again but they don't do anything. You can hear the governor relay under the dash clicking on the interval setting but that's it. I got two extra governors from the junkyard and I tried both of them but it still does the same thing. I'm not sure how to rule out the 6amp circuit breaker. It's quite expensive. It's a fully charged fairly new battery. I'm getting battery voltage at the wiper plug with the switch turned on. The washer feature sprays but of course nothing moves. Could the new motor actually be locked up? I couldn't move the crank arm by hand. Could it be a bad switch eventhough the turn signal, hazards, and washer feature works? Does the clicking tell anything?
