We had a previous wheel bearing topic where it was determined that Timken was the best for the 4WD front hubs. I think that was a while ago, I noticed that Rock Auto carries SKF also which in bearings alone is equal to Timken if not better on some types of bearings but I don't know about specifically ranger 4wd front bearings.

Has there been any more studies on longevity with these units and has anything changed?

yes things have changed, some of the Timken bearings are now coming "MADE IN CHINA" no idea if the quality has suffered, time will tell
I recently purchased two motorcraft bearings from RA for $88 each!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Now that is money well spent...

SKF is also a good bearing just FYI

They only have 1 right now in the non vac hub/ 4 wheel abs model and it is 200 bucks!

I imagine their "service design" isn't quite what their "oem" is? They have service design in pulse hub....

Might end up having to do the SKF. I'm just scared after the Detroit Axle thing, my ball joints I bought from them still work well but the boots are completely deteriorated letting crap in and one of the wheel bearings is making noise.

Dunno if you remember but I put these on my ex cab about 2 years ago. 2 years isn't a lot of time it was only like 15-20,000 miles.

15-20000 from a detroit axle bearing is about twice what I would expect.... I had some making noise just weeks after installing! $95 for two bearings shipped was too good to be true!
How the heck did I score these motorcraft bearings for $88 each? I must have caught them on closeout...I do not remember reading about "service  design" when I ordered them.
I picked them up because of the price.

The timkens are $99 each right now on Rockauto I would probably choose those
Timken Sp450200
I searched for 2001 Explorer 5.0 AWD....not that it really matters
Im checking my "rockauto close out parts" emails to see if any bearings in there.....

I found my receipt
I ordered these: NHUB18
https://www.rockauto.com/en/parts/motorcraft,NHUB18,wheel+bearing+&+hub,1636
2006 ranger 4wd
Motorcraft service design, $82 ea
https://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/ford,2006,ranger,4.0l+v6,1432360,brake+&+wheel+hub,wheel+bearing+&+hub,1636

Still avail for that price!!
Service design or not I bet they outlast Timkens

Wonder what the difference is.... for my 2000's it says I need a NHUB41 {#HUB194, HUB42} Service Design.

Maybe connector style or length on the ABS wire? Perhaps sensor type? The look identical in the picture and I remember anything expo or ranger without the PVH's is supposed to fit physically?

They have the 41's also, 10 bucks more no problem but now I wonder what the difference really is.

@Scrambler:

SKF USA Inc. is the U.S. subsidiary of SKF Group, a world leader in rolling bearings and related technologies including sealing solutions, lubrication systems, mechatronics (combining mechanics and electronics into intelligent systems), and services. Twenty-eight of SKF's 140 global manufacturing sites are located in the U.S., including facilities for the production of seals, lubrication systems, linear motion products, actuation systems, and rolling bearings.

From their website.  SKF has been around for over 100 years.  Never had a problem with their bearings.

When I did maintenance in factories/heavy industry all the bearings were SKF everywhere and it's all we used. So definitely the "industry standard" (in Europe)

I did put new Timken bearing/hub assemblies on our Outback just this saturday and they were "Made in S.Korea oJPN"

So S.Korea or Japan? Seems weird...

SKF, FAG, NTN, NSK, INA all started as overseas companies and most probably still are. Japan makes really good precision products though not as good as back in my day.

FAG's in spite of the name are really good bearings, I believe they originated in Germany.
