I'm chatting with a guy that has a 4406E out of a 2000 F150 with a 5.4.

If we make the deal should I get his front driveshaft also?

Truck has over 150,000 miles but never beat on, is there a chance the Tcase is still in great shape?

Is there anything else I should get off the truck?

This is for my V8 conversion, I have a 97 5.0 and 4R70W trans with the AWD transfer case.

Hope the trans is OK it's the one I dropped the TC out of and ran over it.

I didn't think I would need it. I pulled (with a fork lift) the shell with the trans in it next door, he has a car squisher. The project was originally a 2WD and I bought a 2WD transmission for it.

The motor and 2WD trans is actually in the 2WD truck but I love this 4WD short bed I bought so much I want to make it the V8.

Might just get a trans but it has to be from a 96 or early 97 to match the 97 ECU and all the connections. The trans that came off the thing is probably a good choice.
AND that transfer case will fit right on, all I need will be driveshafts. AND some luck.

LOL.

Dude just texted me he only had it in 4W once and that was to see if it worked before he disassembled the truck.

c'mon 410 tell me if I can use the front driveshaft or not before I seal the deal!

yes get the front d shaft
The t case is likely fine with only 150K on it, they are TOUGH
You do not have to use a 96-97 5.0 4r70w only, you can use 98-01 also. In fact I prefer the 98+ model it was upgraded quite a bit from the 96, the wiring changes from 96-98 are super easy. Basically the 96 model 4r70w had 3 power wires that enter the side of the trans, one for each solenoid. The 98-01 they reduced it down to one power wire, then it splits three ways inside the trans....super easy to re pin and make a 01 trans work in a 96 and vise versa

Have you actually done this, does it work with the earlier ECU without reprogramming.

Will the front driveshaft fit the ranger after the conversion or will it need altered also.

I have done this several times
The PCM had no idea what year 4r70w you have

Ford upgraded the internal wiring harness on the 4r70w from stranded wires to a Rigid plastic piece that carries all the wires when they did this they reduced the number of wires going in the side of the transmission.
Like I said in 96-97 there are 3 power wires going through the white plug on the side of the trans, in 98-01 there is one wire and then it splits three ways inside.
So we often will update an old 96-97 trans to use the 98-01 solenoid and wiring pack
You simply re pin the big white plug on the side of the trans

I have the diagrams I will upload them, pictures worth 1000 words

My 1988 Bronco II uses a 1997.5 computer because I have the P heads and no pats. I am running a 1997 trans that has been custom built and is using the 98+ style solenoid wiring. So I re pinned the truck side wiring to work with the 98 style internal trans harness
I have done this several times since, in both directions even installing a 97 trans into a 99 truck, working backwards so to speak (customer on a budget)

Typically anytime we rebuild a 4r70w we use the 98+ internal wiring harness and will change the truck side of things to match. This goes along with updating all new solenoids, and tons of upgrades/mods to the factory valve body.

Here is the pinout info: Notice only one 361 vehicle power feed on the 98-05, otherwise all the same wires

So you re pin the trans plug to match the chassis connector or the chassis connector to match the trans plug?

Those pinouts are TOTALLY different but it uses the same plug what a mess! 3 and 5 remain the same, everything else is jumbled but basically one power wire is all that is needed.

I guess you could re-pin either side depending on your situation.

Is the 4r70w plugs the same in all 4r70w vehicles? If I could get black06 to nab me a few dozen pairs I could just make re pin adapters I bet they would sell LOL. I bet his work is filled with old crown vics.

OK thanks for that info it is totally clear now, I asked a second question about the front driveshaft if it would fit as is after the conversion or if I have to alter it.

Either way I should probably get it from him to build my driveshaft collection as you have :)

the big white plug on side of trans plug is part of the solenoid wiring/transmission
They changed 96-97 has loose wires, 98-05 has a plastic wire carrier inside the pan.
You cannot re pin the trans side of things, it is embossed in hard plastic after it is built so water does not get in trans

re pin the truck side because 99.9% of the time we want to use the 98-05 wiring and solenoids inside the 96-97 trucks

Yes but you can move 1-2 wires at a time, its not as difficult as the chart makes it appear, it can even be done in the truck with exhaust in place even in my 88. Its a PITA but it can be done, usually through the floor.....

Is the 4r70w plugs the same in all 4r70w vehicles? If I could get black06 to nab me a few dozen pairs I could just make re pin adapters I bet they would sell LOL. I bet his work is filled with old crown vics.

yes the plug on the side of the trans is same all years 4r70w as far as I know 5.0 and 4.6

front driveshaft will likely need shortened, just an inch or so. Also the addition of the conversion U joint.
For some reason when bolted to the 5.0 the 5.4 and even 4.6 shafts are just a tad too long. So I take the shaft apart at slip yoke, grind off some material from both halves and it usually is enough.
It is also possible to push the back of your transmission over to pass side about 3/8" or more by slotting holes in trans x member. This helps with rear driveshaft clearance and front shaft length. Take it a step further and move your 5.0L rearward 1/2" when you drop it in. (FYI You can still fit gt40 intake spacer in 98+ ranger even with the 5.0 moved back 1/2")

YES always get the driveshafts.
I see it like this:
Trips to get parts at junk yards or wreckers or whatever cost time away from the shop.
After a CONVERSION (caps to show a drive train conversion is a big deal!) having 3-4 driveshafts to choose from will save you time and $$$ instead of piecing things together
If I go to the yard and the only set of non dented front and rear driveshafts I can find are from a 5.4 truck, not 4.6 and not expedition (my fav because sometimes they bolt in 4 door ranger and sport trac) I will try to swing a deal and get the shafts for like $10-25 each and take home a few. This way I have parts and pieces, because that is what the driveline shop needs to build the rear shaft for me, the yokes and parts
I like the early 4.6 shafts from exped or short f150, but you cannot always find those.
Also I can build my own front d shafts in house because its a part time t case and I have a welder and a flat surface :)
The rear shaft is the $$$$$ part...but we are still getting off cheap converting to v8 and only really needing exhaust and a rear d shaft! cheap as far as conversions go.......

I almost forgot
The DTRS (digital transmission range sensor) in the 4r70w CHANGED in 98 also

96-97 are analog signal to pcm
98-05 are digital signal to pcm

So you will want to use the dtrs from your 96-97 PCM if you choose to use the 98+ trans in those trucks

96-97 PCM:
5 wire mas
3 wire CPS
analog instrument cluster
analog DTRS
no PATS

98-01 PCM
7 wire MAS (IAC now inside mas sensor body)
2 wire CPS (cps gets ground from grey/red sensor signal return wire)
digital instrument cluster/gages
digital DTRS
PATS

Some changes were 98.5..... at same time as returnless fuel, cast manifolds, etc

96-97 4r70w solenoid wiring:

98-01 4r70w wiring (close enough):

I am using the 97 pcm and I have the DTRS from the 4r70w that came out of the 97.

Funny thing the reason I have the sensor is the 2WD trans I bought came in without one! Empty hole.

Great info, I'll see if transfer case dude will "throw the driveshaft in" the deal.

I'll start an official swap thread when I kick it off, I get help from Adam (black06xlt) every other week and we will probably finish the current project in 2 weeks since this weekend was the "on" weekend. We were able to get the 4.0 from the expo we stripped 2 weeks ago in to the white ranger and bolted up. It is literally hours away from being started need to put radiator and fluids and alternator/AC and connect a few dozen wires.

Once that is done we are going to hammer on my little green one.

You are so lucky to have your own personal parts hunter. I wish I lived right smack in the middle of you , 410customs, and black06xlt. I'd be in range for a electrical modder, parts hunter, and swap master.
