This is gonna be an Fn hassle, not to sound negative but chances are this shift motor isnt gonna just bolt in and all my problems with getting the 4WD to work in this 98 ranger isnt gonna happen.

Can someone please tell me the correct procedure to get under there with the vice grips and spin the pawl so I can get this truck into 4 low and then back to 2 high.

I did it one morning at 4 am and it was a huge hassle cause I didnt know what I was doing, maybe its gotta be in one particular gear to get that stub/pawl whatever you want to call it to move kinda easy?

Im also worried that my vice grips are gonna chew the deal up and then Ill be really up the creek.

Thanks for any help with this.

Not a permanent Solution BUTTTTTTT, when I picked up a transfer case one time. The previous owner had an issue with his shift motor too. His temp solution was taking a 12 point socket, you'll have to figure out what will fit & with tighter tolerances to keep from just stripping anything, and tap it on with a mallet.. your choice of a 3/8" or 1/2" size is relative to use. I have a full 10mm-36mm sockets on my end I could check with them for fitment too. But you should be able to manually change 2WD/High/Low easily with removal of the motor and a ratchet/socket

Sounded like a good idea. I went out there, tools are not an issue, they must have beat the hell out of something cause no socket I have will fit, again maybe if I pounded something on but I dont want to do that.

may need may need to figure out whether it's SAE or metric that will fit all I know is when I got mine there was a socket that was tapped on lightly because it came off with little effort and without damage to the shaft input

You can use the piece from the old shift motor to turn the t case, or just use vise grips

You can take the old motor apart and keep the gear wheel that meshes with the t case "stub" and use that to turn

To get into 4 low the truck must be stopped and in N
That is dead stop, foot on brake, truck in N (Not in parK!!!)

Or if its a stick the clutch must be pressed in fully

You should be able to switch between 4hi and 2wd pretty easily with vise grips, getting 4 low can be a bit more of a challenge.

In 98 they had vacuum hubs but that is another matter.
Let me know if you are able to shift it?
