A couple of you that know me knows I got relieved of my duties after 17 years due to the covid 19 scare and the fact that everything I was designing relied on outdoor events with thousands of people gathering. I guess I should have been designing riot gear since that was more important than motorsports events.

So I have been feeling out little positions here and there, I had a phone interview yesterday at a high speed packaging factory as a repair tech, which I can do. They said it would be a couple weeks and if I was considered they would set up another interview.

This morning I get a call and they want an on site interview with a mechanical aptitude test monday at 2PM. What happened to 2 weeks?

So am I crazy for hopping back in to the job market prior to end of July? Right now to get a job in my field (5 axis CNC programming, machine design) making what I was making I would have to choose another state. The unemployment money is super right now but it doesn't feel right. This is the longest I have not worked since I was 17. So if I take this job it is approximately a 10 dollar an hour pay cut. BUT if I wait till the end of July which most of america will all of the sudden there will be thousands more scrambling for positions.

Am I crazy for not sitting it out and sucking in the large amount of cash the government is feeding me?

Jim, no you are not crazy. If taking the money the government is giving you doesn't feel right grab the job, money is not everything. If you could pay your bills & feed the family go for it, like Jamie said you could always find something else later on.

I understand the whole job thing. Maybe go into the interview with the mindset that “this won't be the last opportunity” and if you feel like you could find something better, then find something better. Or, like 410 said; use it for the immediate cash flow while looking for something better. With your qualification I'm sure you could find something better, and better paying. Maybe not the exact pay you had before, but probably something closer to it. Taking money the government gives you isn't always a bad thing. Would most people feel guilty about it? No. Do honest people feel guilty about it? Yes. It's not like you're getting money because you don't feel like working, like some people I know around here. That's just the $.02 from a “damn millennial” lol.

Thanks guys. They called again and postponed the on-site mechanical skills assessment till Wednesday.
They have a machine strangely enough called the "Do nothing machine" they use for the test, it is not working.
I asked them "Would you like me to come up and fix it?"
Perhaps they do need help if they can't get a machine that does nothing to work.

I'm actually excited. I never really liked the "tractor pull" industry, saw it as a lot of wasted money for a 300 foot race with a prize less than the cost of running the race. I liked programming and designing but didn't like what it was for. I actually tried to leave 3 times, twice I got hired by 2 other places and was roped in to staying by higher positions and money. Then they got rid of me what an insult but I understand.

Machine diagnostics is me, be it a Ranger machine or an overwrapper/filler machine and I did work in a packaging facility once before. I'm looking forward to the interview and who knows what will happen if I get my foot in the door.

Thanks again guys

I can't fault you logic in that when any extra benefits run out, a LOT of people will be looking.  And there is something to be said for working.  I honestly have no idea how anybody has done it and stayed sane.  As background, we never stopped working due to defense work, and my wife has been working from home.  My son and his wife are essential same with my sister.  We fared well luckily.  Meanwhile my next door neighbor has his daughter at home, his wife, his son and his wife are in the camper in the driveway, two grandkids, three dogs and a cat.  People everywhere are doing what they can to get by.  More power to them!

The old adage about it being easier to find a job when you have a job can be true.  You do tend to feel less pressure to accept bad positions when you are employed I think.  Plus getting on a decent company, there is always the chance to move us in that company as skills are recognized.  The cut in pay can be harsh.  I dropped $2.50 an hour when I went where I am.  But the other place was circling the white porcelain fixture rapidly.  An actual interesting story and experience there...

As for the unemployment insurance, Don't feel bad.  The base unemployment does not come out taxpayer funds at all, that comes from companies paying in specifically for that.  Well, the extra benefits, those did come from China, but then everybody got that didn't they?

Oh yeah, one more benefit I got for taking the new job, health insurance.  The old place just stopped paying for it, but didn't tell us for months...

Question, won't you get your job back or isn't that the way you want to go ?
