I collect, restore, and sell old bench vises. Everyone should have a good American made bench vise so show us yours.

Here are the ones I currently have in my possession:

Columbian D45 M5 - Got at an estate sale for $40 and it was in mint condition. Damn near NOS.

Next up is my Columbian 205 M. Since it's an M I would place it around 80 years old. Weighs 95 lbs. Paid $110 (most I've ever paid for a vise).

A 1910-1925 Samson vise. Now this one is unique. Samson was the housebrand vise sold by Sears Roebuck before they trademarked the Craftsman brand for all their tools. This vise was made by Rock Island. Estate sale price: $30

Now my pride and joy and the rarest of them all. A 1970 Wilton "Wilt-O-Matic" Hydraulic 6" 146 lbs vise. It acts like a regular wilton execpt it has a hydraulic cylinder at the end of it. You set the jaws for about 1/8" clearance to the part you will be inserting multiple times (or more of the same part) then you step on a pneumatic pedal that sends air pressure to a hydraulic booster (big pneumatic piston pushing small hydraulic one to multiply pressure). This equates to 6800 lbs of clamping force. Best part of all is I got it for $50!

I have an old bench vise that I got from my pap after he died. I'm not sure of the brand but the name Wilton rings a bell. I post a pic tomorrow

I have two. One is a heavy duty unit that we used on the farm when it was a working farm and the other is a little 3.5" quick clamp unit that I use in the reloading room.

I picked up a 70's era Wilton 9300 many years ago and it works as if new. The shop I work in just broke the screw on their 9300. Called Wilton and it is still available. $200. Ouch. They are looking at a used one to replace the broken one.

How the hell did they break the screw? I've usually seen the whole body crack before the screw gives.

As long as the paint looks decent or they have a good patina I don't really touch them. But man some of these previous owners try to do a "paint job" and don't mask anything off and just go nuts with a paint can.

Forgive me, but i hate you all - i miss having a good vise like there's no tomorrow, i don't even have a workbench right now.

I do plan on getting a bench and vise set up ASAP, whenever that is, maybe someone will decide it's a great gift for a new father? :)

I have to apologize, my posting was meant in jest !

My Vices are not the bolt down type, although I do have one maybe two, my Vices are the Vices of the body and mind and I'm getting too old for this !

I was trying to be funny but didn't type in what my mind was thinking and it went across as I had a lot of Vices piled up, sorry bout dat !

Vices, the type you bolt to the bench, I have two, both packed in one of the boxes of tools that still haven't been unpacked. One is an older 4" Craftsman and the other is a 5" Wilton knock-off, from a local discount Tool Store.

I will, when I get the Barn straightened out and that isn't too far off, I will get pictures of the whole shop including a small portion of the shop dedicated to my latest attempted hobby, a little blacksmithing !

Sorry for any confusion and my lost attempt at humor !

Actually, vices came way before vices - think Adam and his apple.... and just as the original vices take a grip of you, the mechanical vices take a grip of whatever you care to insert in their jaws :'(

I don't like WHISKEY but never knew about the same meaning for these two words.
Reason for not liking Whiskey is a got ssssoooo DRUNK drinking it when I was just 16, I can't even stand the smell anymore !

The good old Americanized English Language, always two ways to say something !

Back to the VICES ! Thanks for the English lesson, I need it !

I have been looking for a good but reasonably prices Post Vise, maybe 6" not too big. Just want to hold smaller pieces of metal while working on them.

Anyone have a good lead on one, rebuilt or rebuildable would be appreciated.
