I determined by logic my 00 with the 4.0 ohv has indeed developed either a head gasket leak or a lobe on the cam is wearing down, possibly both.

Any way it goes it has to come apart so I'm considering all the options. I'm guessing it is at the 220+ mile marker and it has not been easy miles evidently.

Jim, also another thing to consider is cracked cylinder heads with the 4.0. When I purchased my Ranger back in 10/2013 soon after I purchased it the engine developed a miss under load. I pulled all the plugs & replaced them, #-4 cyl plug was fouled. After about 1 month it developed a miss again under load, #- 4 cyl plug was fouled again. This went on for about 6 months, when it developed the miss I would just replace the plug & drive it until the miss came back, then I would replace the plug again. I finally pulled the heads off & found a crack in the heads between the valves in # - 4 cyl (drivers side front) & # - 3 cyl (passengers side rear). I purchased new updated castings cylinder heads & have not had a problem since. If you look very closely in the attached pic between the valves that were removed you can see a crack in the head. The new heads have thicker metal there & are not supposed to crack. While I had the heads off I also replaced all the lifters & rebuilt the rocker arm shaft assemblies.
Old head.

New heads

The guy I bought it from said he replaced the heads with new ones. I'm hoping he used cheap gaskets or didn't torque it right. I'll look for the crack when I pull it apart thanks Mike.

Where did you get the updated casting heads?

I'm burning quite a bit of oil in that one too I bet I find glazed cylinders.

Jim, I got the cyl heads from J & C Enterprises in West Virginia. I am including a link to their E Bay ad.

If it starts missing tomorrow on the way to work the nightmare starts.

Could be the head or head gasket. However, it might be something simpler. The gaskets between the heads and the lower intake are notorious leakers on the 4.0 OHV engines. This allows coolant to be sucked into the runner under manifold vacuum and this can cause misfire. Guess which cylinder is usually affected first .... #4.

Interesting. Did I mention that #4 has a little more compression than #5? It's coming apart, thank you. It should be obvious if that was the issue when I take it off?

I don't know how obvious it would be. I'd look carefully at the gasket itself and the sealing surfaces. Also look for a difference in deposit color on the inside of the head ports.

Changed the oil, first time since last winter, don't drive it as much anymore since I get to take a company vehicle home.

Technically it was “legal”, didn't stick out past either of the bumpers

The towel keeps the ladder from putting dents n scratches in the roof of your truck.

Finally put the lion's on I've had for a while. Going to take them off until I get the front end parts on and aligned. BFG KO 30's.

Stop laughing.

Washed and detailed interior yesterday.
Pulled the Ranger into the garage this morning at 6 am.  Gave the entire truck a hit with the orbital and Meguiras Swirl Remover and then a wax with their Yellow 26.
Aside from a few repaired paint chips, it looks like a new truck.

Drove it to work today! Feels good to get it out of the garage every now and then. I think I've put maybe 1000 miles on her in the last 5 months.

I've decided my rear end has an issue. Bearings or something.  It's whining on the freeway.  But stops off throttle

The rear end in my 2000 does the same thing, whines when on the throttle, & the noise goes away when I step off.

Picked up a set of doors that are totally rust free, off a single cab. Any one know if these doors will fit a extended cab?

Put on the ladder rack. It's time for the Ranger to do some work instead of being a commute bucket.
