Ranger has been acting up lately, cranks but no start, I've run into the situation in the past where a weak battery would cause this IE cranks fine but no start.
I use the battery in the ranger to run a small external water pump to water plants and know how many plants I can water before having to start the truck, let it sit and idle a bit to charge battery and repeat.
Anyway recently it stopped igniting so I replaced battery, it didn't help much, it did start but spit and shuddered so I added starting fluid and it ran fine for a few seconds
I depressed shrader valve on fuel rail and very little fuel came out I assumed the worst and so I've replaced fuel pump.
No difference, starts but spits and shudders, no smooth acceleration when given gas.
I'm wondering if it could be fuel filter, I have it off and have blown through it, not difficult to do but I don't know if that is an indicator of anything?
I've disconnected fuel delivery line again at the top of the tank, I turn the key on and fuel comes out for a few seconds and then stops
I don't know if that helps
Any suggestions
I can put a filter on it but don't want to keep throwing parts at it
If the key is on should I always have a steady stream of fuel coming out of the rail?
I don't have a way to test fuel pressure but I'm sure it's probably safe to assume not enough pressure
A lot of questions I know
Thanks

I say it's fuel related but I'm 2 steps above a glorified parts changer so I'm guessing
I was a bodyman for many years so I know more mechanical than most and a lot less than some
It will start and run without any starting fluid but not at all smoothly

Welcome to FR!

It comes on till it has enough pressure at the rail then it shuts off. When the fuel demands are higher it keeps running.

I'm not convinced it is fuel, the schrader valve should have pressure though you are right hmmmm.

The 98 4.0 was awesome! I'm headed out for a few, do you drive this thing or is it sitting as a battery charger? You could drive it up to one of the canned auto parts franchises and have them throw the code checker on it. It might lend some clues at least.

If you are in central Ohio I could check it out!

Thanks, I use the truck strictly now to circle my property to water my plants, very rarely leaves the property.
It would not make it 10 feet anyway at this point.
When fuel demands are high it shuts off
I'm not in a rush because thankfully I have other vehicles, I'm so swamped right now anyway that this definitely does not take precedence
Do need to get it repaired however
