A little update for everyone. So today while I was at work the technician called me and told me they couldnt get anything from the pcm like there wasnt any communication between their system and the pcm, so they were thinking the pcm was bad and asked if they could check it for $137 and I said sure go ahead. After my lunch break was over he called and left a voicemail and told me he thinks he figured it out, so I called and the tech swapped a relay to the pcm and it cranked over and everything was fine, so he said he is only gonna charge me the initial $137 plus the cost of the part which brings it to $182 even. So, great news is that if it's ready on my lunch I'll be able to go and pick it up and I'll have my truck back tomorrow :) If he calls and says it's not ready or that what they did didnt work and they have to go in further, I wont have it but fingers crossed it was just a bad relay and Lola will be back to rock and roll.

$50 for the part, it must be a relay or mega fuse. So glad they sorted it out for you! Be sure to post up what the issue was

Update numero 2: $182 is now $2,270 because when they put the new relay in today the pcm still wasnt happy, so they're thinking its the pcm needs to be replaced, so I dont know what to do at this point, 2200 is like almost what I make in a month and after Bill's that would be nearly impossible for me to get any time soon. They said they have financing available for the repair, but I dont have sufficient credit history to be approved for the repair loan so this Is fun, lol. To pick it up i have to pay 182 for what they've already done plus 125 for the tow home. :fp

I bet you can get one at a salvage yard for thousands less but I'm not certain. Give the experts a chance to weigh in.

That is alot of $$$ for a replacement PCM!!
Why are they still charging you $50 for a relay that did not fix the problem? I would not be happy with these guys so far they have you at $182 and have not fixed anything. So lets say you pay then the $2200 for a PCM replacement and programming, what if that doesn't fix it? They still want you to pay?
You can get a PCM much cheaper then that. What year engine and trans is this sucker?

Yeah that's what I was thinking, i looked online and a pcm is only 300. I think they just want my truck because not even an hour after speaking to the service tech, I got a message and an email from the trade I'd department saying that they can get me into something new and that a 2008 ranger with 140,000 miles is getting old. The problem is, they dont know the mileage because
1) I never told them and
2) supposedly the problem isnt fixed, and if yall remember the odometer didnt work so theres no way they could've gotten the mileage, unless they fixed it and just want my truck. But I'm probably picking it up next week and paying the 182 to get it back and be done with them, maybe going to a junkyard and getting a pcm idk really. I've even thought about taking it to a yard and seeing what they'd give me for the engine and trans and stripping it to start a project with it. But @410customs it's a 2008 2.3l with the manual transmission.

I know what you all are talking about, SHOPs suck.
You go there for a tune up, just how much can it cost... $800.00 later, OK it is running well at the moment (knock on wood) but it was still a shocker for me !
$2200, wow, not sure if I would have them do the work either, must have been the owner's college fund needed funding.

Shops are just thinking "we have financing" WTF are they thinking, $100.$110,$125 an hour, things just can't keep getting more and more expensive.  Most people don't make enough to get by, how are they expected to put something away for the future.

It almost worth the money to buy a new vehicle every two years and have that bank payment, seems it would end up the same but at least you have a new truck to drive.

Good Luck with finding the parts ! (that's meant in a good way) !

VR,
I'm in the same boat, should I keep this '03 or move on to something else. (Come-on Bronco)
There are four and five year old vehicles out there for not too much, good values, and yes you need credit history to get started but you can't get credit history if you can't borrow the money, Catch 22 !

Welp, I'm going to have to pay $210 to get my truck back, and nothing was fixed on it except the airbag, which is supposed to be free. I understand people cant work for free, but I dont understand why they're charging me for a part that didnt fix anything.

It works the same when seeing a doctor except the bill is usually way bigger

Funny story...on the way home when it was being towed a guy called the driver to see if my truck is for sale and he gave him my number. I talked to him and he said he'd give me around 2,000 for it as is and I may see what he'll give me for it if he shows up today. I don't want to let her go, but as the title states, it just may be time to let go...

If hes willing to pay 2k as is, think of what it's worth fixed. I'd look at what itd cost to replace and what 2k buys before I'd strike a deal.

Yeah, he didnt show today and said he would today. I have pretty good body damage from a giant piece of hail on the roof, small hail dings in the hood, and a big dent in the driver side door, and paint is peeling from my hood, and a cracked windshield...its not the prettiest truck so running I may not even get more than 2,500 with 140,000 miles. I got bondo today and was gonna go to autozone and get their Ford OEM duplicolor spray paint and primer to fix the paint peeling and the big dent on the roof but lost motivation on the truck, lol.

I felt that way about the dodge I sold. Technically it was in great shape and worth more than my ranger. The ranger I replaced it with.
I just hated the dodge, it had given me so many problems, I had been in that stupid 4.7 about 10 times, it stayed down for more than half the time  I owned it. It was in great shape when I sold it. I asked 4k, sold it In  a day and the guy didn't even argue the price. I was so happy to see it leave.

I understand, but I'm super conflicted..I even posted it for sell for 2000 and within an hour 6 people were messaging me and the highest offer I got was 1,700...I turned it down because I'm super conflicted, my first vehicle, I paid for it and its paid off...the reason I'm conflicted is the service tech told me to buy a pcm online (200-400) and they'll program and program keys for 275. Not a bad deal, really. Much less than before, and much more doable. If I do that, then I've already got bondo and spray paint, and a windshield isnt much only about 250 and then my truck will be nearly perfect. I dont know yall, lol. I really don't know

$675 or shop for a new truck? A new truck can have new problems too. If you think you'll enjoy your ranger long enough to justify the repairs I'd go that route. If you think its gonna break down again soon and cause you more grief and a lot more money I'd think about letting it go.

Lots of people dont have the money to upgrade when they replace their vehicles so they end up on a downgrade spiral. repairing what you have is sometimes your best option even if its expensive it's better than buying another problem that you dont know and usually cheaper than replacing it.

I'm biased. Up here in the Pacific north west rangers are either expensive or worn out. You can pay 8-12k for a lower mile (80k miles) nice one or 2k for a beat up 200k mile one.

The thing you are finding out about these rangers is that if you have some aptitude they are not to hard to fix and there are lots of them.
