When I install the shorty center console I have, I want to add a USB port in there, as it's just more practical for me. My plan is to delete (shave and plastic weld) the cig lighter and 12v socket from the bezel since I wouldn't use them, to make it look cleaner. I have found a factory USB port that would probably work with what I'm wanting to do. I was thinking of using the wiring from the 12v socket for the USB port and just extending it down to the shorty console. My question is, has anyone done anything like that or similar in regards to using the existing wiring? I'm no wiring/electronics expert so I don't know if the 12v wiring is adequate to use a USB source of power. I assume it is being that they sell those USB sockets to use in 12v ports, but you know what they say about assuming lol.

Just happen to have done that. But I put it in a different spot.

I'll find a pic lit up. This things charges my phone faster than anything I have ever used. The one on the left goes straight to the radio for playing music off a USB device, the round one is if you want to plug your old Ipod or MP3 player in OR anything with a 1/8" phono jack.

And yes the "cigar lighter" wires are more than enough to power several USB charging ports.

Here's after install. I did this months before I got the radio to interface with the left port.

I like to listen to my MP-3 player in my Ranger so I purchased a radio interface unit with a hookup for my MP-3 player & a charging port & a switch to turn the MP-3 player interface on & off. I mounted it in the cubbie next to the passenger side air bag on/off switch & light.

Everyone's setup looks good so thanks. I'm quoting JAMMAN specifically for a reason. I did some googling and I found a couple old threads from other forums where it states that you need to step down the 12v power to 5v for USB as 12v may damage your phone or device. Looking at the one on the right in the above pic shows that 5v on it. So is this essential or no? I've found converters that are relatively inexpensive, but if the one on the right has that already built in I may just go with that instead of the OEM option, plus there's 2 ports, I can use one for my phone and the other for my Ipod hopefully. Can one of the USB ports on the right also be hooked up to a radio for Ipod use? I'm going with an aftermarket unit. Also where did you source yours from JAMMAN?

They step down to 5V internally, the one on the right is charger only.

The one on the left is an extension to the radio input. All USB ports have a 5V output but the amount of amperage they can put out is different... you wouldn't want to plug a "fan" in to the one on the left. The one on the right is made for quick charging and powering USB devices. I can't see ever needing more than an amp and a half at 5V but if the device requires 2 that plug will power it.

I got it from E-bay but just about any place should have them. Make sure both sockets are rated at high amperage some adapters have a wimpy one and a good one if 2. Any modern device will only pull what it needs.

My wife's CRV has a USB plug under the arm rest (stock), my phone over taxes it and makes it shut down!

Amazon is your best buddy

https://www.amazon.com/SunnyTrip-Waterproof-Cigarette-Voltmeter-Motorcycle/dp/B07GV296SM/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1543510205&sr=8-4&keywords=usb+charge+ports+for+car+wired

Now they come with two USB ports and a voltage gauge all in the size of your old cig lighter
You supply the unit with 12V and it does the rest....easy two wire hookup

I built something like this for my 88 BII:

You can get them in 1.5 amp charge. 2.4 amp charge, dual 2.4....now 3.0? round or shaped like a switch....lighted, non lighted, etc.......

I use these everywhere, well the older ones, I only need one voltage gage. The kids have USB ports in the back seats, the dash has USB ports for drivers and pass, and then I add one to drivers kick panel to power things like GPS and reverse camera (vehicle front and rear camera recording device/ mirror, we have in all of our trucks)

I like this one to go in where a "carling" style rocker switch goes:

I like the looks of the USB ports, so I need a panel for the USBs, the Power Ports, and the 4x Indicators; probably mounted under the Heater Controls.

Something like this, but I will make the panel from some left over sheet aluminum so it fits the Cubby exactly.
