SO.. I now tire of my OHC telling me that ICE -40 is eminent everyday. Apparently I'm in the midst of a vehicle that has a mechanical speedo and I don't think VSS is available to tap into (? still trying to vet that last one).

The OHC seems to require a VSS in order to prove to it that the vehicle is moving. For the longest time the temp would read but be wrong and stay wrong until the next KO/KO [and possible temp change]. Compass works great but Id like the temp sensor to work as intended.

Anyone have any input as to whether or not the 93-94 Ranger 4.0L manual trans 2WD has a VSS circuit to tap into from or since I happen to have a 94 rear diff with a speed sensor in it, an idea of wiring it to work or illustration/schematic to create a working circuit?

The VSS is mounted to the tail housing of the transmission, where the speedo cable connects. I don't know if you can tie into the ABS sensor to obtain anything.

I did know the 1998-2000 Rangers are not equipped with a VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor). The PCM (Powertrain Control Module) receives vehicle speed information from the antilock brake system rear wheel speed sensor. The raw signal from the ABS/VSS sensor on the rear axle goes directly to the Explorer/Ranger 4WABS module where the signal is corrected for tire diameter. Then the corrected signal is sent out on the gray/black to the PCM, speed control, cluster, etc. In this system, the PCM is an end user of the corrected VSS signal.

But I was under the impression my 93 was completely mechanical. I may have to roll under there later this afternoon and see if my 93 being in the end years of the mechanical to mechanical w/VSS has the later.

Kind of jumping the gun ion conversation as it was wet out last night and I didnt want to lay under the truck with a flashlight and for the sake of others opinions.. it was more dry attempt of answering. lol

hat is correct on 98-00 models except for 2wd. On 2wd the GEM, receives the raw signal and converts to square wave signal.

On a 93 there is a VSS that connects directly to the PCM and the Cruise Control Servo module. There is no external square wave signal generated.

Also there is the ABS sensor in the back which also has a RABS test connector ran in parrallel so you tap in to that without being too invasive.

Now to convert the raw signal you may have to acquire a 2wd GEM to convert the signal.

I think the instrumentation was cable driven.

Another method would to be to build a 555 square wave generator circuit that turns on when the truck is on. This will get the truck to think it's always in motion.

I made sometime similar when I was trying to make a speed calibration circuit (Forscan changed those plans).

I rolled under the truck earlier this afternoon and noted that the cable input to the trans for the mechanical speedo HAS the VSS attached to the end of it. NOW I need to find out the proper location IN the vehicle to tap into it.

This one isnt mine in particular obviously but this is what it looks like going into the trans.
