I will assume no trans codes in memory?
The 4r44e is KNOWN for a leaky separator gasket between the valve body and the trans, can cause intermittent issues like this, hard shifting, delayed engagment, hanging in 1st, etc
How many miles?

This is how we fix trucks, eliminate one problem at a time!!!!!!!! getting better!

less than 140,000 miles, no trans codes I can find but since problem 1 isn't on the plate any more I'll go back and check. I haven't reset the DTC's yet still have a light for original problem (cured)

AND it is a constant issue, it only worked right for one trip since I've had it. If I accelerate hard it will chirp the tires into second.

I'm not sure the Ford trans are the same as a 727auto but I had a bad accumulator spring that was making it shift too hard on my plymouth

Ahhhh for the days of the accumulators and vacuum modulators. Transmissions were easy then.

I haven't given an update on part 2, unwanted shift kit in automatic.
Almost a year ago I parked on a downhill slant, face forward. Took me forever to back out because of people in the parking lot. After I backed out and started forward... it was shifting smooth and correctly.  ?
Took it home and the next morning it was banging in to gear again.
Out of curiosity I parked in the same spot, backed out and it started shifting right for that session. ?
SO now what I can do if I want it to shift right for a session is put it in reverse, step on brake and throttle stress it in reverse without moving. Like a brake torque without spinning tires. Most of the time LOL.
It always shifts correctly after doing this unless I drive it for a half hour plus on highway then it will bang again until I reverse brake torque it again.
I'm thinking some sort of stuck ball in the valve body but I'm pretty sure it isn't the TCC now. Since I have one I'm going to take the pan off, put a filter on and the TCC but the problem is if it works after I won't know if it was the TCC or the fresh fluid.

Jim, it was much simpler & easier to work on vehicles back in the 60's & early 70's.
