Where are the front impact sensors on a 2000 ranger? Anyone know what they look like?

I have the wiring diagram to trace the wires if I can find them. I looked all over, and have a half hour in googling.

So the electrical diagram shows no sensors, shows that the RCM actually is the impact sensor? Why do I have impact sensor codes then, does this mean the RCM is baked and I need another?

Does this also mean I cannot get rid of that cup holder and just put carpet down because the RCM needs to be in that exact position to work properly?

Back side of radiator support behind radiator. Kind of a bad location. Probably why I see few rangers with frontend collisions without the airbags deployed. Or it could be the junk ass Takata air bags

The 2000 evidently does not have them, it isn't in the wiring diagram at all.

pats:
B1213

I have 2 ign keys, they both separately start the car, the other key was 30 feet away during testing of both.

RCM:
B1941
B1994
B1998
C1414

Gem:
B1302
B1398
B1428
B1352

The truck has a rebuilt title
The ign. keys do not match the door, there is no door key yet.

Calling forscan anthony.........

It would almost have to have crash sensors in order for the airbags to deploy. I would think anyway?

Electric diagram says sensors are in the RCM under the drink holder that detect crash, position, that kind of stuff. Might be a 2000 thing.

The truck runs great especially after the cam synch.

Trans seems to beat itself in to gears, shifts like it has a "shift kit" from the past, hard shifts up and down. I kinda like it but it is not natural.

That is the control module for the air bags that is under the cup holder. It's a small box about 4x4x2 with 1 to 2 plugs on it depending upon year

No crash sensors on radiator support. When I replaced my engine bay harness I didn't have them. The RCM is the sensor. Notice how it has an arrow saying to install it forward? That's because of the accelerometer built into it.

Let me look at those code numbers and I'll be back.

On a Mercedes if there isn't a knee airbag installed (depends on option codes) then the pigtail for they airbag is taped up. If the wires get cut and short out it will through an error code (even if the coding says there isn't even a knee airbag suppose to be there).

So that is a possibility that “unused” pins are shorted. May want to cross reference with explorer RCM pin outs.

Thanks guys, might have to think outside the box on this one ANYTHING might have been swapped or replaced.

Forscan sees a 2000 with a 3.0 but I can't even guarantee the PCM is from that exact truck.

I do know it is the quickest 3.0 I have ever seen. Uncommonly quick. 3.go instead of 3.slo.

Out of curiosity pull the pcm out and see if someone put a chip on the back of it. I put a chip on an 88 with a 2.9 and it ran like a 4.0

C1414 is incorrect VIN programmed to RCM. I bet the RCM was replaced, you said rebuilt title. Probably in a air bag deployed wreck.

They could have put an RCM into the vehicle that required impact sensors. Or it may have had the coding set to use impact sensors.

Does the VIN that Forscan pulls the same as the tag on the cab? Also what does forscan give as the part# hardware# calibration# etc for the RCM? Ill go check my truck and see (it's a 2000 so it should be the same).

Yep it's an Explorer RCM in a Ranger. The first 3 RCM codes don't occur on Rangers but are codes that occur on Explorers.

As far as the GEM codes:

B1302: Accessory Delay Relay Coil Circuit Failure
B1398: Power Window Driver One Touch Window Relay Circuit
B1428: Seat Belt Lamp Circuit Failure
B1352: Ignition Key in Circuit Failure (I've had this one for years but it doesn't ding or anything, bad connection at ignition cylinder, wire with green/blue plastic retainer on it).

Won't know till tomorrow, I left that one at work. But I do have another 2000 sitting out back at work I can rob the RCM from if need be.

I'll plug it back in tomorrow afternoon when I get back to work and read all those numbers. Didn't know the Vin was in the RCM too that is cool.

Something tells me these modules are vin specific and have to be programmed to what truck they are installed in. Someone shed some light on this.

Even though EDR (event data recorder) data wasn't standardized until 2010 by the NHTSA, a lot of manufacturers required VIN #s to be written into critical control units. They do this for liability and also quality control. Helps when trying to figure out when stuff has been swapped (like in this case).

Will it still work with a mismatch? Depends on the model and the module. I don't know if the VIN mismatch is even a malfuction indicator light code that a customer would ever see.

Ok I was wondering because if it was 2wd then it wouldn't have a GEM at all but a CTM (which is smaller with less connectors).

just scanned my truck. Forgot how simple old Fords were. All it shows is XL5AAF for part number and software version v4.

Cool thanks, I won't make it to work till about 3PM EST and should have the "alternate" RCM in by 4 and scanned.

I have 4 rangers now should be able to build one really really nice one from all the parts.

Yay RCM codes gone except for a new b1318 but I bet that's from it not having power for 2 years. Bag lights are off, no other RCM codes.

The one that was in it (one bolt BTW lol):

And the one I pulled from the gherkin (2000 2wd supposed to be 5.0 project):

Replaced A with B and codes are gone.

The gem I can hack later, now I feel safe driving. Thank you all for the support!
