I've read the 28 and 31 spline use the same outer bearing so the 31 spline housing tapers quite a bit more at the ends vs the 28 spline. I've also read some of the 31 spline came with 2 tags on the pumpkin. Can you confirm this?

The 7.4 and 8.8 share the same bearing as the same shafts are the same size. For the [Ranger] 31 spline, a different bearing is required, as both the outer diameter and inner diameter are larger than a 28 spline axle.

Explorer axle factoids:

31 spline 8.8 is as strong as a dana 60
All 8.8 use the same ring and pinion gear sets, it does not matter if it is 28 spline, 31 spline, full size, ranger, mustang or explorer an 8.8 ring and pinion is a 8.8 R&P

The 31 spline 8.8 has 3.25" axle tubes
Yes they are press fit into the center section and plug welded. A popular upgrade for us Explorer dudes is to fully weld the tubes to the housing to keep it from spinning
All explorers 95-01 have 31 spline disc brake rear axle
The v8 trucks were ALL 3.73 and with a limited slip
The two axle tags are simply, one tells you the axle info/ID the other says to run 75w/140 oil only
The v8 trucks have extra tabs welded to them for the V8 rear traction bars

I have put many 31 spline 8.8 into Rangers over the years, a very nice upgrade. to the factory ranger rear axles

98-2011 front diffs are the same. Front hubs changed from vacuum to live in 99. 12 inch brakes were added in 03 calendar year. 03 trucks built in 02 had 11 inch brakes. The only parts needed for a vacuum hub delete is knuckles bearings and CV shafts. The cheapest way to add an LSD to an open 8.8 is swap in the carrier from a mustang gt. They had 28 spline LSD from 79-2004 while your at you might as well snag the rear discs from a 94-2004 mustang. Gt or v6 car will work. No difference from the 8.8 axle or the 7.5 axle in the mustang brakes. I have write ups on both the vacuum hub delet and rear disc swap
