Explorer axle factoids: 31 spline 8.8 is as strong as a dana 60 All 8.8 use the same ring and pinion gear sets, it does not matter if it is 28 spline, 31 spline, full size, ranger, mustang or explorer an 8.8 ring and pinion is a 8.8 R&P The 31 spline 8.8 has 3.25" axle tubes Yes they are press fit into the center section and plug welded. A popular upgrade for us Explorer dudes is to fully weld the tubes to the housing to keep it from spinning All explorers 95-01 have 31 spline disc brake rear axle The v8 trucks were ALL 3.73 and with a limited slip The two axle tags are simply, one tells you the axle info/ID the other says to run 75w/140 oil only The v8 trucks have extra tabs welded to them for the V8 rear traction bars I have put many 31 spline 8.8 into Rangers over the years, a very nice upgrade. to the factory ranger rear axles
