Whats up!
Yes its true, we are doing another 5.0 build! Well 306 actually.......so a 5.01444 liter conversion

So this Ranger has had a good life. One owner since new (about 3 miles I believe it had when purchased) and VERY WELL CARED FOR. This truck is VERY loved!! This is obvious with the amount of PIO (pride in ownership) shows through when looking over this truck. She's been babied!!

The v6 drivetrain made it all the way to 301K miles before it was driven into my shop for some changes.
This truck belongs to a real car dude, who has always wanted to build a v8 ranger, so much so that he had already collected some really nice parts! As with most of us it can be hard to find the time to do the conversion. That is where I come in. So an agreement was struck, the truck was delivered to the shop, we had quite an adventure! More on that later

Here she is in all her glory a 2000 Ranger with 301K and some tasty upgrades! Started life as a OHV 4.0 and 5r55e auto push button 4x4 Ranger. Superlift, BTF UCA, rear air bags, tasty body upgrades like 02 front clip, 06 mirrors and tails, etc...
Drove her into the shop, the 5r55e transmission has seen better days, the pushrod 4.0 is down on power for sure....with 301,000 miles on the odometer it is time.....time for a 306!!

Truck was delivered to me with some seriously nice parts ready to go in; Jasper re manufactured gt40 306, Completely rebuilt 4r70w auto trans, low mile 4406e t case, all new Amsoil fluids, explorer 8.8 rear axle, tons of new parts and more.

Plans are:
306 with Torque Monster Headers
fresh shiny 4r70w auto
4406 e shift t case
disc brake 31 spline 8.8 rear (re geared to 4.10 to match front) using new R&P
Custom exhaust
Custom driveshafts
Owner prefers stock looking engine bay/conversion
Quick turnaround time, turn key conversion

The 300K 4.0 is already out, the engine I am keeping and plan to rebuild for another project. The 5r trans is a core and will be dropped off with Brett in Colorado (Brett gets all my cores)
Engine bay has been prepped and cleaned up. New engine mounts will be installed, new transmission mount, new trans and torque converter, then the TMH fitted to the new 306 and finally will be dropped in the bay.

We are waiting for the Torque Monster headers to arrive, they will ship in two weeks (from Aug 01) according to Robert of TMH.

This conversion, like most, has been in the works for some time. The owner is from the Seattle area and we have been coordinating for months. He is able to turn wrenches and do this v8 swap on his own, but cannot find the time to do so. So I volunteered to help, for a small fee of course. I better be good at this because this guy is as meticulous as I am!
I have lots of help on this build, things are a bit crazy in the shop right now with the 2007 Ranger being built and a 1100 sq ft addition being built on my house....so nice to have some help from my stepsons James and Jerry and my neighbor Sean. Sean is building the house addition as the rest of us focus on the trucks.

So now on to the pictures!!

The owner was given a 99 Explorer 5.0 in rough shape as his drivetrain and axle donor. 99 Was stripped clean of all good parts, trans was sent in for rebuild, engine was ordered, t case was sourced....all packed loaded up and delivered to the shop

New parts!

Jasper reman gt40 306, dressed up with explorer intake and accessory brackets. Will be getting a new PS pump reservoir

Bed full of parts including the super awesome spray chrome 4r70w rebuild custom paint job "art" transmission!

Yeah buddy! Custom airbrush paint job complete with blue pan and red bolts! (WTF?)

(Hopefully it works better then it looks!)

Our truck owner likes the "stock look" well lets just hope he doesnt spend too much time underneath this trans.......I offered to repaint the trans but we decided against it since it is fresh build / under warranty

4406e shift t case

Amsoil fluids ready to go in

Explorer axle ready for gears, new bearings, brakes, spring perches, etc.......

Remove the factory drivetrain!
All went smoothly EXCEPT the aftermarket fan clutch, holy heck that thing was a PITA to get loose. Finally used air chisel on the nut and it came free
Usually we can remove a pushrod 4.0 and auto trans in about 3-4 hours, this time I spent about 2 hours just on the fan clutch LOL

Wicked nice front driveshaft on this rig, see the CV boot eliminator kit?

V6/ stock V8 awd guys take note this is a nice upgrade for 98+ RBV

4.0 vs 5.01

I spend MUCH of my life waiting for parts.......... here we are again!
As soon as the TMH arrive the 306 will go in
I really prefer to seal the headers to the engine outside of the engine bay whenever possible, the TMH are not exactly easy to install and require some special wrench work :)

Looks like a super tricked out truck already, did he do any wheeling in it?

This is a very nice ranger for sure

"did he do any wheeling in it?"

He sure did! We even got some light wheeling in here at the property before it went into the shop to be pulled apart :)

I wish it was that easy! We are waiting on some headers that were ordered back in May...
Its all right though Robert at torque monster headers is a good dude to this ranger/explorer community, if he needs some extra time we give it to him. At least the headers are on their way, you cannot rush perfection!!!!!!!!!! I am just glad he is still making these headers......
I should have them in 1.5-2 weeks

Yes! Robert has built our headers and they were headed to coating then to be shipped to me for install
Meanwhile the explorer 8.8 rear axle is about to be re geared to 4.10 to match the front.........
The truck is prepped ready to accept the v8, when the headers get here it will get a final power wash and the v8 dropped in using brand new engine mounts and a trans mount.
Once the headers get here the conversion will happen VERY quickly, like maybe 5-7 days? I'm focused on clearing my schedule so I can be full time truck shop dude.
We have a few things going on here right now, like been building a 1000 sq ft two story addition (I traded the v6 second chance truck to my neighbor for his labor building my addition, he is a contractor been building houses since he was 19).
My stepson James has a 20x30 metal shop going up next week he saved his pennies and bought a metal building, we prepared the site....you know business as usual around here!!!!!

yes the high pressure hose from the sohc v6 is tooooo short
You need to install the 5.0 high pressure line, it is way easier with the engine out to get to the fitting on the rack and pinion

The SOHC is the 4.0. The 3.0 does seem longer, you will have yours done before I start my second one which is a 3.0 so let us know.

You will probably have yours done before I finish the first one.

3.0 hose might work, the 4.0 hose would work if it was longer
I ordered 5 of them

Been waiting on the TMH for a bit now.
I took it upon myself to order this:
https://www.speedwaymotors.com/Small-Block-Ford-289-351W-Header-Kit-1-5-8-Tube-3-Inch-Collector,3842.html
And I am really interested in a set of these:
http://ultimateheaders.com/2018/01/02/ford-windsor-z-heads-modular-flange-elbow-system/

410Customs conversion headers? We shall see.... simple and high flow/non restrictive are my goals
I have wanted to do this for many years time to mock up some headers. If the TMH get here heck yeah, we will run them. In the meantime I am going to see about in house headers for the SBF into 98+ SLA D35 4x4 rangers and sploders
I will be converting my 01 sport trac to a 306 this winter/spring and I have at least two more trucks coming my way, so we could really use some TMH or some homebrew something. I know one thing, STOCK SUCKS in this case

There are already headers for those dudes :)
If they are built right they will work on rwd 98+ trucks that are torsion sprung.
Bunch of cheaper conversion headers avail for the earlier TTB trucks and the rwd guys

Wife will kill you UNLESS its for her? B5000 wifey? LOL

If my simple header plan works out then I will use these flanges, sooo cool! they allow a super tight turn coming right out of the head and good clamping force so a full flange is not needed

Look who decided to crash the party!

It NEVER gets old unboxing a set of Torque Monster Headers!! However I do wish they would get rid of the packing peanuts? Anyone else hate these things as much as I do?

Some CHANGES to the new sets of TMH, can anyone spot the difference?

My dumbass forgot to order Percy's gaskets for these things...so I'm off to find some
I can then install these on the Jasper 306 and get the engine dropped in.
Plan is to have the engine and trans in by the weekend
I will be power washing the truck one more time, she has collected some dust waiting for parts.
IT'S ON NOW!!!!!!!
