After building this mustang I've been working on. I've become a fan of the 4.6L modular engine. Simple set up easy to make power dependable. All around good engine

I've seen the term "modular" used with the 4.6L several times.  What, exactly, does that mean in the context of the 4.6L?

Good for a mustang, not too much for a ranger. They are incredibly wide especially later iterations.

They also have those multiple cams and multiple chains. Chains stretch per linear measure. A chain that ties a cam in with a crank on a pushrod motor is so much shorter.. just for simple math let's say 10 inches. If that chain stretches .01 per inch, it only is .10 longer than it was, will probably still run well. You take a chain that is 6 times longer that is almost 5/8 of an inch, which is why they need tensioners, which is why the tensioners wear, and regardless of the tensioning the mechanical cam timing is still changing happening later in the cycle. It works for indy cars which get rebuilt every 750 miles or so but I think it was a horrible design for daily drivers.

Think of the difference in the 2000 4.0 in a ranger and the 2001. How much horsepower did they gain per what they lost in reliability, longevity and about a dozen or so more ty's?

I owned 2 crown vics both with 4.6. They both were extremely powerful for the cubes but they had some issues.

Kind of like a logic problem, X being a personal preference for comfort zone.

IF (Ranger) AND (income - expenses) > X AND (no need for AC)
THEN 4.6
ELSE find another solution
END IF

Since there is a 5.0 in my project already, it is probably going to be less expensive to get it working than to do anything else.

Nice logic, but you left out one important step in your code:

ELIF (CoolFactor) == IMPORTANT
THEN GoBig OR GoHome

COBOL's nested If statement...

I haven't programmed COBOL since the 89's and I still have loop nightmares.

I couldn't decide if I wanted to use an ELSE IF or a CASE statement.  ELSE IF won.  I haven't programmed since around 2000.  RPG II, III and ILE were my nightmares.  Did a lot of Borland Turbo Basic in the 1990s and I occasionally play with Visual Studio.  I just don't have a NEED to write anything...

I learned COBOL, ForTran, and Machine language in the USAF. I only used COBOL, I hated life.

COBOL is still being used today, mostly in the banking sector.  I can't for the life of me understand WHY it is still around...

I drove  4.6-F150, STD CAB, nice truck, plenty of power, but it just didn't have the sound of the old V-8.

Due to the fact of size vs fitment, and the Ranger and its engine bay, I'm inclined to say as long as there is a large amount of performance equipment in the aftermarket for the 302/5.0L-W, I see no reason to go newer V-8 !

Now IF I was building from the ground up, no engine bay restrictions, the 4.6/5.0L-T might just be the engine for my truck.

As things stand, the only other alternatives to the 5.0L-W, would be a diesel, OR maybe an LS Engine, Big Blocks don't figure in, wide engines don't figure in.

My Ranger will go as fast as I need it to with a 5.0L-W, its easier than all the rest too !

So why the talk, do the Windsor and get it over with !

I have no plans for a V* in my future for my Ranger but I can't see a Ranger planting more than 300 HP to the ground without serious mods to the wheel tubs and axle to support a wide, sticky, tire. To get more than 1 hp per cubic inch with a 302/5.0 small block gets very expensive quickly. I would think stroking  would be one of the best bang for the buck engine mods.

My last V-* Ranger had approximately 300 HP, how much made it to the rear tires... ????, but it easily smoked up the 33's !
The new one, well it hard to say but living close to a Chassis Dino, I'm thinking of running over there and see, when it is done !
