Okay so many of you guys know we build Ranger Based Vehicles here at my house.

My stepson James has been working in my shop, learning, teaching, wrenching and building right along side me for 11+ years now.
I have taught he and his brother most of what I know. I give him space in my shop to work on his projects because we all live back here and homestead together.
His daughter (my granddaughter) goes to school & Karate with my son, he and his wife rent half of the house from us and together we all work hard to make life possible way back here off grid in the woods in North Idaho.
James has been working on a 2002 Sport trac that he has converted to a 5.0 with the AWD and it is ALMOST finished.
This truck will be for sale, so he can make some extra $$$.
James is/was a technician at a local auto repair shop and was working 5 days a week, spending some of his spare time in the shop building this rig so he can flip it.

Well we have had some bad luck lately, James is pretty sick and in need of some help!
It is with a heavy heart I am typing this.
My stepson has been diagnosed with stage 4 cancer after having to go in for emergency surgery on his abdomen to remove some tumors..
He had to leave his job and is at home focused on getting better. So we, his friends and family are stepping in here to help.
James is only 32 years old and has stage 4 melanoma which is aggressive and widespread.
He is now in the fight for his young life.
Not to worry!! He is going to beat this thing, and we can all help!

Here is a Go Fund Me page his sister in law started, if anyone is interested in helping, every little bit counts:

https://www.gofundme.com/f/1v46j0pwio

His wife is working part time at the local Vet, she has been very tough through all of this.
We are taking care of James here at home, he has much family all around and non stop support and care.
Drug treatments and chemotherapy begin next week.
He still does not know we are downstairs finishing his sport trac...shhhh its still a secret.
James' brother, me and my neighbor are all kicking in our labor to finish this build, my dad is going to finance the operation, buying whatever parts are needed.

So I present to you, project 2002 Sport Trac 5.0 - We have rallied around James and we are going to do whatever it takes to finish this 5.0 build and get this truck for sale!
He and his family could use the $$$$ right now.

Yesterday I got started on the "shake down" test....going over the vehicle and build and making a list of what is needed to complete

James got the truck this far, the v8 drivetrain is in! Engine and trans have been re sealed and tuned up, everything is bolted down, plumbing is done, now its time for some fun wiring, finish the plumbing, drivelines, exhaust, go through the front suspension, brakes and put the interior back together.

First up is the wiring:
This is a late 01 build Sport Trac, often called "Job 2" it has the PATS security key Pats type "B".
Today I will be building the custom alternator/charging wiring and begin working on the tricky pats security wiring. We are doing things a little differently on this one. You see we are able to keep the original Sport trac factory key and program it to work with the 99 Explorer 5.0 PCM. This way the door still fits the door locks, tailgate locks and ignition tumbler, we simply will wire in the PATS type "A" system from the 99 explorer donor and then program some keys using a special tool/programmer

Here is how the truck sits today, a super super well cared for and clean 2002 Sport Trac, now to be V8 powered AWD!!

This masking tape has been on here way too long, step 1 is to clean this up!

Step 2 wire it up!
power charging harness will need a little modification to mate 99 5.0 to 02 trac

AS you can see she is already a 302 truck, just needs a little love to be running!!

More pics and details about this build coming ASAP

You guys are way toooooo awesome
Thank you very much
words do not tell how we feel
The support he is getting from all over the place will make all the difference
IT MEANS EVERYTHING TO ME and to the family
James was blown away yesterday by your generosity on the go fund me, it brings tears, it means so much to us!! THANK YOU!!

Wiring is coming, its the only way to keep our brains occupied so we don't over think too much
I'm still digging out equipment from the snow, we had 6' fall last week and a few casualties (plow truck snapped a TTB beam)
But nothing can stop us from working on this truck!!!!!!

That is truth
Snow is what I call the great equalizer because no matter what you drive or how well equipped the snow can stop you in your tracks.
I love nothing more then snow season and messing around with tires and tracks
Not much to report on the sport trac this am aside from James brother dug a ton of snow yesterday just so he could get to the 99 limited that is outside covered in 6' of the stuff (which is the v8 donor) so he could snip the wiring pigtail for the pats module. So now I have the wiring pigtail I can do the PATs wiring!
Working on getting a new beam for the plow truck or possibly just bending and plating the one that is broken and stuff it back in there
As soon as this is done Im back on the trac

James is headed in for his first PET scan today, this is the full body scan that will show how spread the cancer is and then find out what the best treatment plan is.
Fingers crossed!! we have high hopes for today's scan

Jamie, I just ran across this thread (not sure how I missed it). I am so sorry to hear about James, but I will rely on faith that he will come out of this just fine! I am pleased to see your Go-Fund-Me is going nicely and is now over $1000. :D  Keep the faith, continue to build on the Sport Trac and know you have supportive friends here at FR!  God Bless!!!

The results of the PET scan are in and its pretty good news
The cancer is not lyphatic and is only melanoma which is very very good news
His melanoma cells have a mutation that allows James to be part of a clinical trial which can actually rid his body of the disease with injections and pills
This is good news because he does not need chemo! This gives him a fighting chance to beat this thing instead of a death sentence
After a month of terrible news there is some positive and some additional hope. This is great for James and for the family!
He still has some serious stage 4 melanoma to beat, and we are going to help!

Work on the sport trac will be happening today/tomorrow as time allows.......family and work first then I get shop time
Thanks for all the well wishes and support you guys, it is awesome!

That is great news Jamie. Back in 1996 I had a small spot on my back that would not heal that turned out to be skin cancer. Nothing in my 62 years scared me more then the "C" word. I have a 5" scar on my back where they cut out the skin cancer. That from so many years of laying in the sun with improper protection, but back then in the 60';s & 70's no one new what long term exposure to the sun could cause.

Whew, that's good news!
Good to hear good news.
Been hearing/having too much of the bad lately.

My thoughts are with you guys. ,
hopely help a little bit. You guys are living something I strive/dream to do someday.
It's not always all good, but you guys seem well equiped to handle anything coming.
And I'm not even talking about the SportTrac conversion you can do those eyes closed wearing oven mittens by now I'm sure lol

More that you guys seem to have a great strong family/group living together helping each other doing things together and supporting the clan.

Thanks dudes you guys are like family to me online personalities or not, you will always be welcomed in my home and shop.

Finally got some time to mess around  with the sport trac wiring!! Yeah!
For each wire run there is like 1-2 hours of research.
Yes I have done tons of these over the years so it helps....but each one is different and require lots of research. This one is really different because it is an 02
So here is the goal, we are going to keep the 02 sport trac ignition tumbler door locks and tail gate lock all using similar key that it came with.
So far we have purchased two older style PATS transponder blank keys from Ebay and had them cut to match the sport trac key.
Now I have removed the 2000 explorer 5.0 donor PATS module and wiring pigtail
The 2000 PATS module is then wired into the 02 sport trac LEAVING the factory 02 PATS/keyless entry module in place (piggyback the new PATS system)

Here is how that is done:
2000 model pats module has 10 wires, most of them can be found under the steering column so this is a great place to locate the new 2000 pats box:

All wires were soldered and wrapped, here is the box wired in and finished:

The wires are:
WH/YE = hot all times, wired into yellow wire at ignition switch
R/LG = ACC power in start or run, wired into ACC power wire at ignition switch
BK/WH = ground, grounded to steering column frame near airbag ground wire
DB/LG = theft indicator light, Wired directly to instrument cluster, the theft light wire from the truck is CUT, this way only our new 2000 PATS module is controlling the theft light
BK/YE = RF -, wired directly to ignition halo receiver on the 02 trac this wire is BK/WH
DG/WH = RF+, wired directly to ignition halo receiver on the 02 trac, this wire is R/LG
GY/OG = Sig Receive, wired directly to ignition halo on the 02 trac, this wire is GY/OG
WH/LG = Sig Send, wired directly to ignition halo on the 02 trac, this wire is WH/LG
TN/OG = Data link, wired directly into the OBD2 port this wire is TN/OG
PK/LB = Data link, wired directly into the OBD2 port, this wire is PK/LB

Now our pats module DOES NOT have the DB/OG wire which would be the starter enable ground wire. Some PATS modules have this wire some do not. Since ours does not I will have to GROUND the STARTER relay in the power dist box. If it DID have this wire then the DB/OG wire would become the ground for the starter relay in the under hood power dist box.
So there it is, no wires were CUT (except theft light) instead the new 2000 pats module was piggybacked into the trucks existing system.

theft light wire run and installed on instrument cluster, 6th pin in on short side of the longest connector:

Just like other SOHC V6 to pushrod 5.0 conversions the tachometer ground wire needs to be re located behind the instrument cluster so that your V6 tach will read proper RPM for the V8
The ground wire is simply un pinned from one connector behind the inst. cluster and re located to the proper V8 position

Next we move to the under hood wiring:
First up the alternator, the 5.0 alternator regulator power wire and ground feed from instrument cluster battery light travel through the C115 42 pin plug on the engine side, pins 41 and 42

see the big yellow wire on pin 42 engine side? (small GN/RD is right next to it)

It is MIA on the truck side,we have a blank spot in pin 42:

The wire was removed from the 5.0 engine bay harness and will be added in:

In the 2000 model this wire (circuit 36) goes directly to fuse 14, a mini 30 amp fuse in the power dist box.

In a 2002 model it has a fusible link and goes directly to the batt feed wires at the power box
I will be adding a 30 amp fuse to the 02 box and feeding the wire to there.

more on this later today...........

Nice work on the wiring Jamie. I am in the process of re-wiring my 69 Mustang Coupe & it makes me dizzy when I stare at the wiring diagrams for a while. I have to take a break & then go back to it.

one wire at a time!!!! MAP it out on both sides until you have a complete map with all answers and then wire it up one wire at a time!!!
Mistakes are costly and snowball into bigger issues quickly

Wiring is my specialty! Thanks to my dad having me solder stuff at like 10 years old, he always put RC cars and cool projects in front of me as a kid and I was installing fog lights and stereo systems in cars before subwoofers in your trunk was a thing and before I could even drive!!!!!!

Hey you saw I made a list of each. Now I am slowly gathering the know-how on how to make each top work together. I got the alternator/ac compressor/high pressure switch wiring but after that I'm still a little foggy on what to do. But I will say once I have it apart I'm hoping to see the end of the tunnel a little bit better lol

We actually stole him from Craigslist seriously. I never thought in a million years he would join but the build he was advertising was obviously a step beyond the normal slap a 5.0 in a ranger realm.

We actually stole him from Craigslist seriously. I never thought in a million years he would join but the build he was advertising was obviously a step beyond the normal slap a 5.0 in a ranger realm.

Up until I read that, I thought only junk came from Craigslist! LMAO

Allright speaking of another level :) here is how I do the alternator wiring add into the 02:
First remove the yellow/wh alt wire and the black/orange wire from the 2000 donor power box, we are going to add a 30 amp mini fuse to the 02 trac PJB (pwr junct box)

Make map of existing fuses and my target fuse loc in the 02 box, this way I can pull all fuses, pull box apart and when it is done I have a location map ready to go.

target location for new fuse

yellow/white wire ready to stab

Black/orange wire ready to stab

wires fed from underside of PJB

new pins now in place

new fuse installed!

Now we need to hook up the black/orange wire to power, in the 200 truck it simply slips onto the batt power stud, for the 02 I had to get creative:
target location

more detail

Mods needed to clearance for wire

Wire installed

Now see these two battery + feeds, one from battery one to starter

Modify them until they look like this, now they will hook up to the 02 PJB

Now turning my attention to getting things cleaned up

cleaned up the coolant tank, purple power, soap, water, and a bendy brush....rinse repeat

Locate some donor parts to get this thing running, I made a list of what's left....

This is the starter relay for a 2002 sport trac:

This is the DB/OR (dark blue with orange tracer) wire, this is the wire PATS will ground when it allows the starter to run.
I need to ground this wire, circuit 86 starter relay ground to PATS........

This way our ignition switch will run the starter
