strip the 4.0 down to the lower intake, remove  the fan, radiator, and both accessory brackets, hoses, lines, and wires
Work your way around the engine and make sure nothing is still attached to it, fuel line, ground strap, power steering hoses, etc
drain all fluids
Remove the 4 nuts holding the engine down

Then put the truck up as HIGH AS YOU CAN GET IT
The more space you have underneath the easier it is to work
remove the trans pan and let it drain, when its mostly drained put the pan back on
Drain the t case
remove the front and rear d shafts
Remove/cut the Y pipe out of the way
Cut the exhaust or unbolt it
Put a jack under the t case and remove the transmission mount and entire transmission crossmember
Now let the t case hang down
With the x member removed you can now easily get the 5 transfer case bolts
drop t case
with transmission hanging there remove the starter and trans lines, remove shift cable and trans wiring

Now you are ready to pull the engine and trans together

Takes about 4-5 hours working by myself

NO torch! He is planning to re use the truck LOL
Are you planning to keep the old 4.0 and trans or sell or? If its junk then you can save alot of time by cutting some things like the heater hoses, fuel line, etc but cut them on the engine side........
YOu want to keep the engine around to pick parts off of until your conversion is DONE ....trust me on this

Good news! I stopped by my old boss's place and he said I can use a lift and his huge snap on tool box!!

The 4.0 runs good, just the driver side head gasket (last I checked) is weeping coolant. Not into the oil or anything. Not even 30k miles ago I got all new motor-craft timing chain tensioners, Tstat housing, rad hoses, coolant!

Hell it still has plenty of power to ROAST the right rear tire off the truck. And I'm not scared to drive it a hour away from home with my 6x12 hooked to the truck. The trans/transfer case are still working beautifully. The trans always been serviced, had a huge cooler on it since I got the truck. The transfer case got its normal fluid changes.

So I sat down at my work bench to start connecting the 42 pin wire harness to the ranger 42 pin connector . I get to about the 6th wire and something not adding up. The expo connector harness don't match up to the rest of the 1996 motor harness.

The EVTM I got for a 1996 explorer 5.0 doesn't have the correct 42 pin connector in it! The closest is C115F but pin 29 is blank, in the book 29 is for circuit *784 wire color LB/BK. The rest of the pins are correct

Oh man that is a wicked cool graphic! make me laugh
Thanks for that!!

On explorer the 42 pin is called C115
f is female side
Let me go lookup pin 29 and circuit 748
Know this there are mid year changes and you may find wires in place or not depending on build date and options
Your 5.0 engine wiring came from a 96?
Your ranger is 2002 I know that...Ill get my books out

C115, explorer 42 pin connector,
pin 29 LB/BK is low range 4x4 input to pcm..... A 5.0 does not have this wire, no 4x4 system in place of any kind

Here is typical 5.0 Explorer C115 42 pin "pin out"
On the left is the 2000 explorer 5.0 PCM/engine side
On the right is 98 Ranger 3.0 5 speed, body side (C112m I think on a Ranger)

the check mark on the far right indicates the wire is present on both trucks and match up. a - (dash) equals not present on ranger
I THINK the "0" in the left column means the wire is not present or needs attention
and then later I added the / (Slash) through the "0" as I checked each wire off
At the bottom of the second page written in pencil is a list of wires not present for my swap, both on the ex side and the ranger side
Your 02 Ranger may be slightly different, but I bet not much

I can try to scan these in and get better copies if needed..

close up

Those pages should be helpful to you, not exact, but helpful to get started

The 02 sport trac v8 thread AND the 98 ranger 5.0 thread are a good place to see the alternator and power dist, starter harness mods to integrate explorer underhood layout into a Ranger

You will need to wire up your alternator feeds, the starter wiring harness, ac clutch and ac high pressure switch
Once running you will probably need to get a Dagota digital speedometer interface so the 2002 speedo and inst cluster will be happy.

Does your 02 have 4 wheel abs brakes? cruise control?

It does have abs/cruise control and a/  c

I'll go over my wiring on paper and for sure figure out what needs to be moved so at least the stuff that can be just  soldered in the connectors is done.

Oh I think I'll do this the hard way haha. I'm just gona repin the female connector to the way it is on the male connector.

I'll double check the ranger connector.

pick your battles!
If it can easily be re pinned, that is the best way
If you do not have the correct pin on the end of the wire, or for some other reason....solder every connection NO EXCEPTIONS! Butt connectors do not hold up in under hood environment...
(Yes those wicked cool self sealing aircraft ones will work in place of a solder... but I would go broke if I had to buy one of those for every solder joint on one of thees builds)

say it with me now three oh two three oh two...

ALL 5.0 explorers have:
4 doors
3.73 limited slip
AC
Cruise
4WABS

Some have:
Air suspension
EATC
message center

So I sat down and finished re-connecting the two different harness back together. What I'm left with on the explorer side is pin 17,18, 24,28,33,34,36,37,39,

Granted 34 is just a ground to which I'll run to the body. For the rest well... I'm not too sure what to do.

Pin 17 circuit 791 pressure transducer output-fuel tank
Pin 18 circuit 351 signal return fuel tank
Pin 24 circuit 329 start signal feed
Pin 28 circuit 394 pcm accel signal
Pin 33 circuit 463 electronic shift control module feed
Pin 36 circuit 34 positive feed to heated  O2 sensors
Pin37 circuit a/c high pressure switch cutoff switch input
Pin 39 circuit 191 vapor Management valve

I have to double check the ranger pin out on the truck tomorrow so I can triple check that I'm wiring stuff correctly to the explorer harness

HELP 410!

Hahahaha no I mean name the sidekick Ranger
Oh man I laughed so hard at that. I guess I'm taking the homeschool thing a little too seriously eh?
I do not need any pictures from the book, you need to lookup the wires on the Ranger side of things and see if the pins in question match up.
Without the right book I cannot confirm any of these wires.
