Alright everybody. Some of you may know.
I am building a bit of a mini Baja truck.
What's a Baja truck without a good ole, 5.0L 302?

I picked up a 2000 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer 5.0 V8. Running and driving. $500 cash. Title in hand.

Boyfriend drove it home. No power windows. No inner door handles. But hey. It drove the 25 miles home. Haha.

I need tips. How tos. Links. Videos. Anything you guys got. I've been reading and looking for honestly. Months. And I came across this deal. Too good to pass up.
My truck is an 05 4 cylinder. No PATs system. So I had a few questions on that as well.

I have all 3 volumes of the Explorer factory manuals. Along with the Ranger factory service manual and the entire wiring diagram book on the way from eBay.

Any input is appreciated!!

Good Morning Ranger_Danger_,

The Truck is looking good, what color are you going with ?

As to the V-8 Swap, first what's the climit like in the Department of Motor Vehicles about Swaps, will you be able to get an inspection Sticker or is that even a problem in FL ?

Next there are a lot of articles in the three Ranger Site I check into.  If you want addies I can pull them but try this link after you check the "How-To's" on this site.
You will need to go to these sites, check out their How-To's and start asking questions.
There are so many thing tho watch for, it is hard to say hit me with all the answers and this swap has been done a lot so there should be enough help in any of the sites.

Get as much info as possible up front, don't start this swap until you know you have  all your questions answered, although it is straight forward swap in a lot of way, it will get complicated fast if you are not sure of what you are doing.

Good Luck with the V8 Swap.

Ltr

p.s. on the "ranger-forums.com" site, if you have a question, ask RonD, he seems to have a lot of the answers.  This site has good people too but it doesn't hurt to have two sites working for you.

I have never played with a truck so new LOL anything after 2000 on a swap I'm out. Bob here (V8Level2) has a 02 he did a swap on, he's on that other forum also.

I invited Ron at one point would someone else do it again please?

The problem here is we are less than 2 years old ALL the other ranger forums have been going for 8/15 years. Give us 10 years.....

Didn't intend to make anyone uncomfortable with posting another sites link BUT... When I talk to RonD, he has the ability to pull the info together that is needed.

BUT, any site, anyone that can help and we do have some good members here on this site, but I stand by my suggestion, get the info where you can, but get info before starting... AND determine if you can do it or get it done, before starting and being in a mess.

I re read your post Kaylee (after running in to you on facebook) and your life will be easier since you do have the "books".

A couple things-

Does Tonto have coils or was it an edge with torsion bars when you started?

Do you plan on using the AWD case from the expo or are you going to upgrade? The AWD case will not let you exit 4WD.

Just wondering about your differential too, do you know what you have?

Sorry if I'm going over things you already have handled.

I have a coil spring 2wd Ranger.
The explorer is a 2wd. So I won't have to worry too much about transfer case or anything. I plan on bolting my stock 5 speed to the 5.0. Just until I can afford a F150 5 Speed.

I swapped the 7.5 Ford Ranger 4wd rear axle with 4.10 in my ranger when i was younger.

Ill be taking the 8.8 out of the explorer. along with all the lines, reservoirs, and calipers off of the explorer. I'll be installing 4.88 or 5.13 ratio into the 8.8. As it'll be disk brake swap. And I can fab up the shock mounts myself. Along with leaf spring mounts.

The XLT Standards cab, short bed rangers are the same wheelbase as the explorer 4 door. So the driveshaft will be the transferred from the  explorer. I can find a U Joint that'll work. Or all else. Get a custom one made. Plenty of driveshaft guys here in Florida.

As for electronics. I'll be pulling the gauges out of the explorer. Getting the computer reprogrammed for no PATS and for manual. I'll be repinning and basically building my own wiring harness.
Fuel system return and pressure lines lines are the same.
Explorer AC will bolt in from what I know

"I plan on bolting my stock 5 speed to the 5.0"
Not going to happen

The 4 cyl and 6 cyl ranger transmissions will not bolt up to the 302 you must use a 5 speed from a 3.8L/302/351 truck

Everything else sounds like a great plan!

From what I remember. My coworker did a 4 cylinder 2.3 5 Speed in his foxbody 302. He said it bolted right up. So. I'll ask him details.

18. 2 trucks and my dirt bike all in my name. Used to have 2 bikes.
Also paying all my own insurance and phone bill. Along with gas and food. Still at home but it's because I take Care of my mom.
Not perfect. But I don't know the meaning of daddy's money. I had a bit of a hand up. No hand outs.

With the explorer being 2wd. I will not Be 4wd swapping it. As the prerunner is a 2wd desert trophy truck/race truck. But. I have been reading into some 4wd swaps. And the amount of travel and flex I could get. Woooooh. Drool and googly eyes.

2.3L used a cologne tranmission bellhousing pattern

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Ford_bellhousing_patterns#Early_Small_block_V8_pattern

It will not bolt up to the 302, even if it did the M5od mazda 5 speed used in the rangers will not hold up to v8 power very long!
