My 1996 4.0 Ranger has an issue with just cutting out intermittently while driving. Usually if I wait a couple of minutes roadside then it will start again. After it stalls if I try to start it it just cranks but doesn't catch fire and start - like it either isn't getting fuel or isn't getting a spark. Anyone else had this issue? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. New Engine was installed about  1.5 years ago but issue preceded that. Thanks!

How do the spark plugs look? Are they carboned up, wet with fuel, or do they a fine ash look to them?

The other area to check is what kind of pressure does the fuel rail have?

plugs look fine I was hoping it wasn't the fuel line as the pump requires lifting the bed. Thanks for the response it is much appreciated!

If you do have to replace the fuel pump be sure to buy new bolts for the bed. It will be about $60  but the originals on my 04 were too far gone to be reused. I also chased the nuts with a tap to clean them up and then used plenty of anti-seize in case I had to pull the bed off again.  While I had my bed off I also wire brushed  all of the surface rust on the frame and spare tire carrier. Since I had easy access I also swapped out the rear shocks.

I am immediately smelling electrical, but would need to check a couple things. Start it cold and shake some wires around under the hood, especially the cam synch plug, the plug going into the coils, the wire going to the crank sensor (be careful around the fan)

I did have one with the same problem, I drove around for months with a fuel pressure gauge on the inside waiting for it to stall. Of course it waited forever. I initially thought it was a fuel pump issue.

One day it finally stalled and the pressure was still up so I knew it was electrical at that point. Without monitoring things it will be harder to determine what is going wrong.

Very long story made very short, the plug going into the cam synch was bad. Wiggling it made the car stall.

Tony I'm going to need bed bolts soon, I'm pulling it to make it easier to do shackles, springs and shocks. Where did you end up getting them from?

Jim, go to the home page and scroll down to the second item on the right just beneath "Readers Rides". Sorry, I had to be a smart ass. Contact 410 and get the current discount code for RockAuto also.

Just a satisfied customer.

I have never had an incorrect part or rebuilt part that didn't work.  On my 99 Lariat I had the power steering pump start leaking. I got a rebuilt one from Advance Auto that had a lifetime warranty. I changed that PS pump 5 times in 6 weeks. Most of them sang so loud you couldn't hear yourself think.  That was back 15 years ago.
