 my 98 B4000's exhaust is pretty rusty crusty and nasty. I would like to replace it. cat seems fine, so not sure if I want to go with the expense of a full system or go with a cat back. 

There are not much in the way of performance gains from just an exhaust from the OHV engine correct? What have you done for yours?

I have really toyed with the idea of changing my exhaust system over the years.  Something with a little more sound, not a lot, just a bit of the rumble I remember from my V8 days, not as loud as my bike for sure.  I like the dual tips as well.  I like the look of straight out the back, but it occurs to me that if that was what I had, the exhaust would have taken a huge hit when I got rear-ended, so maybe side exit like this is a better option.  In the end I am kind of cheap to pull off an exhaust system that has nothing wrong with it and is working fine...

I prefer out the back, my '66 Mustang is that way, but being rear-ended MIGHT have changed things for me...

 Generally on everyday cars and light commercials exhausts exit the back, pointing to the rear or to the rear and downwards.

For some exotic cars, trucks and bigger commercials the exhausts exit to the driver's side (away from pedestrians on the pavement) and just in front of the rear wheels.

 My 2000 4.0L has just the 2 cats after the "Y" pipe, but when I check the walker web site I see it should have 2 cats, one in each side of the "Y" pipe. The exhaust shop that replaced my "Y" pipe might have eliminated the ones when they constructed a new "Y" pipe for my truck.

 Not sure you can hear the sound of the exhaust on line but listen to a few before buying if you can !
My choice is the DynoMax, after the first set, used on my 5.0L '88 STX
Ranger, I have never gone anywhere else.

DynoMax makes Cat-Back Systems and complete systems OR you can buy the pieces and do it all yourself.

 I think the extra pre-cats were added as part of the cafe standard, they really choke the engine, and quieten it down too much as well.

If i was doing it again, i'd still remove the pre-cats as they killed the lower end performance (significantly) but i wouldn't replace the rear muffler with a cherry bomb, it's not loud, it's just a little more than i wanted.

 How much does removing the forward Cat affect the emissions ?

Did you feel a gain in power once the Cat was removed ?

That sounds like something I would like to do but here is SoCal I have to meet emission standards !

On my '88/5.0L, I didn't use cats at all, just high flow exhaust system but getting a sticker in MA is a piece of cake compares to Cali.

 I removed the 3 pre-cats, not the two inline main cats - so far as emissions are concerned, they're not programmed into the system and don't affect it. If cold start up testing was performed, you've read a change.

And yes, i immediately felt everything free up.
