I didn't search the Forum, I didn't read too many of the Threads but I am looking for a good overview of any mods that can be done on the 3.0L V-6 to get some more power.

Reason is I live in a state that DOES NOT LOKE MOD'd engines.

What can be done to the 3.0L V-6, is it a lost cause ?

Thanks to anyone wanting to give suggestions !

Nothing I can think of that wouldn't blow your chances of passing the inspection.

3.0 likes to breathe, you can wake one up with more open exhaust having a cat every 3 inches really restricts things.

Never heard of someone doing a "tune" on a 3.0 but I'm sure it has been done. I don't know if the head gaskets would last with a turbo since they blow them just fine without.

Is moving an option?

I had a 94 cougar XR7 with a 3.0L. Not sure if it's the same variation. It would scoot. Itd go high in the rpms but seemed like it could go and go.

Wasnt there a Taurus SHO that people were tweaking. Thought it was a 3.0L as well. Might scan the mustang forums to see if there are any 3.0L builds.

Is yours OHV?

Moving is not an option, just got here !

I would need the same computer as I now have, Cali is a PITA on emissions !

Thanks for the ideas, there has to be a way around this !

You've done way to much to your truck to start over with a 4.0L SOHC ranger. After reading up on the 3.0L all signs are pointing toward moving to a V8 friendly place. Lol.  Seeing your tire size gearing might help.

Only solution shy of a 95 Taurus SHO swap...

2003 Edge in California eh?
4.6 conversion $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
4.0L SOHC engine w/ 5 speed :) Fun Fun and the most simple, best MPG, less power loss with manual trans, and very reliable when babied
4.0L SOHC with power adders (supercharged) and built 5r trans

The late model SOHC engines are pretty damn powerful and emissions legal in CA PLUS its basically a bolt in conversion

With that said you guys already know I like the v8 4r70w transmission alot more then the v6 5r55e especially over 250hp. I am no fan of all the timing components in the SOHC engine either, but with good care we are seeing close to 300K miles from them now.....

Heck a 4 banger turbo would be a pretty nice setup to consider compared to the 3.0

If I thought I could put a 5.0L in my Ranger, even an F150 Version, I would... but although I know the year needs to be newer than my truck, I am thinking Cali will not like it... !

I wondered about putting in a Turbo 4, problem is the truck come in at 4400 lb., a little too much for a four banger.

I guess I need to get into this a little more, because I need a little more power for the ride to San Deigo and the hills coming home on The 15.

Thx

The ecoboost 4 banger turbo can motivate a ranger IMO no problem
or turbo a 2.5L or whatever goes easily into the ranger and gives you the trans you want
Last year of 5.0 was 2001 in the explorer

Do you want auto or 5 speed?

Do you want auto or 5 speed?

First I am going auto this time, getting older and the traffic and ALL OF THE F'n Stop Signs and Signals in  SoCal, make an auto a must have.
My preference is 5 or 6 speed manual, can't beat the sound you get out of a manual behind the engine.

The 4.6/5.0 V-8 sound interesting, maybe I can sell the 5.0 W and get a newer 5.0... I will have to look into that.

Thx for the input.

Last question... for now,  What is a good transmission that will bolt to the 5.0 Coyote, and adapt to an Atlas II ?
Is there a six speed with low first gears ?  I know the automatic will give you the feeling of a lower first but I wanted good towing power.

What gear do you have in it?

The 15 isnt that bad through SD or Temecula and 60% of the time its all traffic and you can't even do the speed limit anyway, despite people thinking that it's 90 MPH. I mean theres a lil bit of a climb south of Temecula, and northbound between Pala Mesa and Fallbrook but even on a 3.08 gear and 32's.. maybe shifted down to 4th gear if I was only doing 60-65 to start..(??) 3.73 not so much.

I say regear and or standby my original J.A.T.O. assist pkg plan concept.. LMAO

I am running 4.56's with 33's.
Most of the time the power to gear ratio isn't too bad, but hit a long hill with a high grade percentage and the little 3.0 shows its true power band... NONE... 4th gear then 3rd...  !
I's gotten 22 MPG, sometimes not often, over all the 3.0 is working its ass off most of the time... ssssoooo more power is needed !

I'm going to check out the viability of the 5.0L Coyote, I have been told the swap isn't easy without major body rework.

Any opinions on the best Auto-Trans for a 5.0Coyote and 4 wheel drive ?

Thx/Ltr

Here is a good example of the new DOHC V8 engine swap. It's called project rolling thunder. It has 19 short videos. I'll post the link to part one. To watch the rest just google search "project rolling thunder part 2" etc... to see all 19 parts just go up in number each search.

Good Series... a lot of work too !
The Windsors are just bolt-in, too bad there is a kit...or maybe just some different Emission Laws..., but the things that interested me is the Power Brake mods and the heater & A/C !

I need to finish watching the rest of the Story !

Thx !
