Hello, a few questions Im hoping someone will be kind enough to answer

Ive got heads coming for my 98 OHV Ranger

1- What is the head bolt torque
2- What is the intake
2.5 What about the rocker arms?
3- Buying the heads from Clearwater heads, supposedly a thicker casting than originals, buying a kit that comes with A.M gaskets, might this be an issue? Or do I really need to stick with OEM gaskets. I dont want to do this twice.
4- Im not familiar with the 4.0, is there anything I need to pay special attention to when putting this thing back together? Any tips? At this point heads are off and cylinder bores look good and the truck is showing 102 on the odometer.
Im gonna of course change the oil, whats recommended.

From what Ive seen there is so much information on google about these rangers that its tough to discern good info from bad.

Thanks for the help

I see specs here http://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/4_0_Page.shtml but on other sites I see that they are saying cylinder head and intake are supposed to get torqued together but no clear explanation that I can find and no pictures

Ive also read lubricate therads on head bolts, some engines recommend this and some dont?

Why are you replacing head gaskets?

I would stick with Felpro gaskets
Yes the lower intake and the heads on the OHV get torqued together for the final step, very important.

Do you have the torque specs handy and sequence? I was going to look it up on alldata but I'm freakin slammed today at work.

First off, welcome to F-R. Now to your questions;

1) Here is a link https://arpinstructions.com/instructions/253-3701.pdf that explains the torque sequence & the torque spec.

2) Here is a link http://www.therangerstation.com/forums/showthread.php?t=103009 that has the cylinder head & intake torque spec & sequence.

2.5) I replaced all the rocker arms while mine was apart.

3) Most people recommend Fel Pro gaskets.

4) Your mileage is right about mine was at when I replaced the heads on my 2000 4.0 OHV. They are pricey but I replaced all the valve lifters because they can not be removed once the heads are on, so I replaced all of them while I was replacing the heads. I also replaced the water pump at the same time since it was easy to get at, & also check the plastic fan mine was cracked badly & I replaced also at that time. I also used the thicker casting cylinder heads which I purchased from a company in West Virginia & it has been fine since & that was 3 years ago I replaced them.

Here are a few pics from when I did mine.

I appreciate the welcome and replies, I have an alldata instruction that I printed out this A.M and it says nothing about tightening the intake and heads together.

Looking at the links given above I dont see any mention of it either? Did I miss it?

I agree that now would be a good time to replace some more parts since they are easy to get at but Ive been down that road all too often and its tough to stop so Im just gonna do what I started out doing and thats replace heads and drive it.

I've recently (2 days ago) stripped a 4.0 OHV and I see no mechanical reason for tightening them together regardless of any article.

Having designed machines you really couldn't attach the intake unless the heads were first torqued where they are supposed to be, it would move the surface the intake gasket was trying to seal to. I'm about to write an article on replacing a 3.0 cam synch (I know it's been done 100 times) but I see no reason for half the steps I read on TRS among others.

Just like taking the door panel off a ranger with electric windows, all the articles have you un plugging the switches when you can poke the entire door handle easily through the hole in the panel created by taking the handle off. I broke a tang on a switch doing it their way I will never do it again if the goal is to just get inside the door.

When I did the heads on my 4.0 I torqued the heads & then installed & torqued the intake.
