My goal is to have a decent paint job for less than $350. I am changing the color from pealing paint silver to a gunmetal to charcoal grey. It will be a custom color. I will probably spray two light coats with no clearcoat with a light 1500 grit wet sand in between.

I have found a Paint gun with an adjustable regulator and a in-line descendant filter for the air line at Harbor Freight for less than $50 toatal. I am going to use the NAPA acrylic enamel one stage with no clearcoat. Not included in my initial budget is a painted on bed liner and I am leaning towards the Dupli-Color kit. I hope to have the parts and paint by the weekend - work is interfering right now. The plan is to paint the rear of the cab w/ roof, then the outside of the bed, rear bumper, and then Dupli-Color a bed liner and ladder rack mounts. I am also going to trim the front ladder rack mount to be slightly shorter than the bed like the rear one. Once all of this is cured I will put the bed back on the truck and do the tailgate, front bumper, hood, and then left and right fender/door. I am color matching the bumpers but I need a new lower plastic front valance and grill (these are exempt from my budget). Any help sourcing these would be appreciated - I would prefer a honeycomb grill that would be painted to match the truck.

I have some minor body work that needs to be done. A pinhole gouge at the back of the cab, a small dent in the hood, and a mis-aligned passenger door/front fender. Then there are some heavy scratches. I checked the bondo kit I had on the shelf and sometime in the past 20 years it has turned into a rock. I need to add a quart or half gallon bondo kit to the list of supplies. I have about a third of the sandpaper I am probably going to go through but I have an orbital air sander and my trusty corner cat corded sander for the bigger jobs. The tailgate is going to take some work.

The bed caps have been removed as well as the plastic pads for the step sides. I still have the mud flaps, tailgate flappers, and rear bumper cover to remove. I have pressure washed all visible surfaces of the bed. Before pictures have been taken but I will upload them later.

I almost always get so excited to start stuff that I forget the before shots. Glad you remembered.

When I did my little paint project earlier this year I went to home crepo for sanding discs for my DA and orbital and they were pretty cleaned out of all but 60-80 grit. The finer grades were scarce. Took 4 hardware stores and 3 automotive places to get everything. Supply chain interruptions due to covid and increased demand due to people staying home due to covid was the reasons I was given.

I worked an 11 hour day yesterday so there was no progress. Today I spent my lunch brake chasing down supplies.

Check! The paint, reducer, and hardener was $446.95. I was going to go with a flat paint which would have been about $70 cheaper but I got a fine metal-flake charcoal grey. The NAPA paint I was originally going to get is no longer being sold by NAPA. I priced the paint, reducer, and hardener at $244 of their web site but it is no longer available.

While I was at NAPA I got a small container of Bondo and a package of 15 amp fuses for the blinkers for $21.18. The Bondo I have had on the shelf for the past 20 year is a solid chunk. I have also developed a short to ground in my turn signals. It affects both sides so I need to do a little troubleshooting.

The trip to Harbor Freight was right in line with what I expected. I spent $47.23 on a in-line desiccant filter, fittings, paint gun, and pack of 500 grit sandpaper. I need to service my air compressor, set up my in-line filter, and assemble the paint gun. I have a spot on the rear of the cab that needs smoothing and some body filler. I also need to sand the roof and rear of the cab. I also need to remove the mud flaps and screws holding the fender well liner and then sand the outside of the bed. I am on the fence about a painted in bed-liner as I am approaching the limit of the maximum I wanted to spend on this project.

Still need a source for the plastic lower valence front bumper and grill. I can get the honeycomb grill from Rock Auto for $63 plus shipping but I cant get the bumper lower valence.

Total: $515.36

Hole in the back of the cab. light rust so it happened in the last few months. It is below the bed line???

Plugged hole. It still needs some primer and another light sanding.

Rust bubble that I ground out.

Again, sandable primer and it will be good.

Paint worn off the top of the door and just below the window trim.

I plan on sanding Friday and painting the roof , rear of the cab, outside bed, and inner sides of the bed Saturday morning depending on weather. I have a tempeture range of 50 to 70 degrees with my mix formula. I am doing a single stage so there will be no clearcoat and I hope to get 2 or 3 coats on most of the truck.

I have some work to do to the passenger door as it does not line up with the lines of the truck. The gap for the door to fender is wrong so it will be loosened and readjusted as will the door. I have a small dent in the hood I will adjust with a hammer. I foresee a patch of Bondo and some hood work.

I sanded and repaired a couple of bad spots on the bed. I was planning on painting but the wind is gusting a bit too high. Sometime in the past the passenger side was replaced. There is evidence of bed frame repair and the hardware is not correct on the finder well. The door does not fit properly on the cab but the gap is correct for the front fender, the front fender and hood do match but my thought is that somewhere near the front it is an eighth to a quarter inch out of spec and was aligned front to back. It should have been realigned from the rear of the cab forward. I plan on loosing everything up and align the door to the cab and work it forward.

Left side sanded twice. Once with 400 grit and a second time with 800 grit. If I had a paint booth I would take it to a 1200 wet sand but this is an outdoor driveway shoot.

Front of the bed. No real issue here.

Hole in the fender with previous bondo? It went all the way through. It looks like this was a spot repair.

There was a second divot that needed a little mud. They are now smooth.

Once the wind dies down I may shoot it or I may do it tomorrow. It also doesn't help that my neighbor up wind is doing yard work so there a cloud of dust that is drifting towards my project. The inside bed only got a light 400 grit sanding with extra time spent on scratches and surface rust but it still has dents. The inside will get a light dusting of paint for 4 or 5 coats for a thicker and hopefully harder coat of paint. I have 2 rubber grommets inside the gas filler that I will coat with grease to keep the paint and the tailgate hinge will also get a coat of grease.

The GOOD: There was no wind and the temp was at 65 degrees, right in the middle of the temperature spread for the hardener. I taped off the rear of the cab and mixed up a batch of paint. I set the gun by spraying the front of the bed. I went on to do the rear of the truck in a light coat. The paint is about 3 shades darker than I wanted but it will do. I had enough paint to go over the sides of the bed. I ran out on the rear section. It was beautiful, no runs, and a smooth paint job.

The BAD: I went to clean up the paint gun and apparently paint thinner is not the best stuff to clean single stage acrylic. Paint thinner made the acrylic congeal. It was a mess but I finally got it clean.

The UGLY: While I was cleaning the paint gun the wind kicked up. I now have about a dozen leaves in-bedded in the pait on the sides of the bed. On top of that the paint dad a major run like the side just slid down the side of the truck. I will need to let it cure for 3 or 4 days before I can sand it smooth and re-prep it for paint. I got to remember - Thin coats.

No pics today. I will take some of the Ugly for a before resand and a few of the panit in progress next time. I will spend the next few days prepping the rest of the truck for a non-stop paint session this weekend.

It must have been really early when I first read this post I was thinking, cool he's coating his driveway!! must be a custom driveway or something.....Ive been thinking of coating the shop concrete which is why my brain is broken at 530 am
Now I am excited to see we are actually painting a silver ranger and I'm a total dumbass but it did giver me a good laugh
So far its coming along nicely, good time to fix the paint when there are just tiny rust bubbles...not rust repair panels :)

consider getting a harbor freight porta garage to keep debris off the fresh paint?
Silver is the best color, maybe not to paint, but for longevity the silver and gold trucks paint last the longest of all of them

I have had two vehicles with silver paint and clearcoat. Both have pealed miserably. The first was an 84 Olds 88 2-door, a land yacht. I had a sudo-paint booth and I laid down about 9 coats of Imeron Porsche Red with minor sanding on the the first 5 coats. Once I buffed it with polishing compound it looked a foot deep. It was a huge success as I also painted the door jams and the inside of the trunk lid and hood. When I blew the diesel 350 my supervisor offered me 3 times what I paid for it so he could convert it to gas. He put a HP 350 crate engine in it and is still driving it.

The Ranger is a parts runner for my farm that is now almost defunct. I have been driving it for the past 4 years as it was a better choice over a POS Tundra 4x4 V8. I started driving it when it had 80k miles on it. The paint was starting to peal then but it had better acceleration than the Tundra and also got 150% better fuel mileage.

I sanded off the runs. I also got the bed ready to re-paint. I will have a makeshift paint booth the next 3 days. No more leaves in the pant. I have lots of pep to get accomplished in the next day or two.

All that has happened is sanding and bodywork. The reducer I have is temperature specific and it is now too hot to paint. It is $67 a pint so I will wait on a cool front to come in. At the earliest it will be next Friday before I can paint. I am about 75% ready for paint.

The hurricane was at tropical storm 55 mph winds with gust in the upper 70's when it blew through Atlanta. I have been working in the yard the past two days. I have 6 piles of limbs, pine cones, and pine needles.

I also cleaned out my storage area under my deck. I still need to get my kayak out and staple a sheet of plastic to the bottom of the deck and to the openings in the walls to help minimize crap landing on wet paint. I have the bed sitting on two saw horses in my trailer under the deck right now. With it higher off the ground I see some areas that I need to work on. Everything has a rough 150 grit sand and about 30% has had the 500 grit. I am debating if I am going to do a 1000 grit wet sand.

Rain and the temps are too high till the weekend. The bed is ready to spray and 90% of the cab is ready but I will need to mask it off again. I have the cab rigged to be street legal to drive in the rain. The ElectraGlide was getting lots of use until the rain moved in. I wanted to be through with it by now but the weather has not cooperated. I have 2 weeks to get it done before I fly North for Thanksgiving.

Traveling for Thanksgiving. I am flying from ATL to Logan in Boston then catching a bus to Portsmouth NH. My daughter lives in Newmarket NH and I am spending the week with her.

New Hampshire is a beautiful state in the fall. There is two weeks of spring, two weeks of summer, and two weeks of fall. When it hits winter it can be nasty. I am hoping for fair weather.

The weather is cooperating. I did a 1000 grit wet sand to the bed and back of the truck and then washed it this morning. I took my Stihl leaf blower and dried the bed and truck and staged them under my deck. I have another tarp to put up as soon as the driveway is dry and I will start masking. The current plan is to get a coat on about 1pm and another at 5pm to the bed and back of the truck. Then to install the bed back on the truck tomorrow and prep the tailgate.

I got a second coat on the back of the cab, rear bumper, and front of the bed. I will be putting the bed back on tomorrow. I was able to get the doorjam back around to the parts of the passenger door and the entire bed inside and out. It was a thin coat and I mixed a little larger batch. I can see some sanding swirls of the 400 grit paper so I will need to re-visit my sanding. I also had to spend some extra time cleaning my paint gun. I didn't do as good a job as I should have this morning but it is now 100%.

I am going to be sanding and then doing a coat of primer over what does not have new paint where I will sand the primer off with 1000 to 1200 paper over this next week. The weather looks good for finishing the paint job next weekend. I was able to finish at dusk and did not get any pictures. I will take plenty when I put the bed on.

I got good coats on the back of the truck and front of the bed as well as the rear bumper. There are a few runs inside the bed but in my defense I was on a ladder leaning over the wet outside bed. I wasn't sure how the bumper plastic pad would take the paint but it took it well. The bed is on the truck and the driver side wheel well liner is reattached. The curbside is a different story. I have got to pull it and replace most of the mount clips. The dark paint also let me know my sanding was sub-par.

This truck was repaired on the passenger side before I got it. The wheel well liner had interior plastic push tabs holding it on. It is missing the tabs on the liner and the metal screws. I have to pull it to put the correct hardware on it. I have already re-aligned the passenger door, front fender, and hood where the gaps are now even and the sheet metal lines up. It took some shims and persuasion with the rubber mallet. I also had to adjust the front bed mount with the mallet. The two Bubba brothers must have done the bodywork as it was some serious red-neck engineering. I understand why the clearcoat was pealing in the passenger side now.

I have the ladder rack mounts, fire extinguisher mount, and tailgate on the saw horses. The next step is to get a better electrical sander. My compressor cant keep up with my air sander. I also need to upgrade my moisture filter. The in-line decasent filter is shot after three uses. After a shopping trip the tailgate will get disassembled and sanded tomorrow. I will hit the bed next and the rest of the cab. I hope to put down two good coats on everything next weekend. I have it street legal with a bed right now.

Been there. In the back of my mind I'm always searching for little 1 and 2 hour slots to fit the Ranger in.

Most times it is Saturday between the time the wife goes to work and gets back, usually a 4 hour slot but other things have to be done too, I usually end up with an hour or so.

I clocked 47.5 hours last week on the job that is supposed to be 35 hours max. I was too tired to do anything to the Ranger. I have the coming week off and I am traveling to New Hampshire Tuesday and returning Saturday. I bought the tickets last April and got 1st class for what I paid for coach last year.

I have everything prepped and I am waiting on weather again. It is 69 degrees right now. I may get to shoot it a 4 pm. If it not 65 or less I will wait till tomorrow and shoot it as soon as the dew dries off. It is supposed to be about 8 degrees cooler tomorrow. I could finish it up if things go right. I also had to replace the water filter on my air tank. I drained it as well. The new filter is larger and is easier to service.

I will finish the masking regardless. I am using a plastic masking tape that the sticky stuff doesn't pull off as easily. A lesson I learned with the first coat on the back of the cab.

Note: the Ford-Rangers.com sticker and the original dealership plastic stickers had bonded with the paint. I had to aggressively sand them off and take it to bare metal, prime, and re-sand.

December was a bust for working on the Ranger. Too much work then I spent 11 days in Florida. The weather has been wrong ever since I got back. Too warm or too cold or I had obligations that came first.

On another note I have noticed a vibration in the truck. I checked the driveshaft universals and they are tight. It gets worse at higher speeds and is not RPM related. It is not brake related. i will keep looking for it and hopefully it will not leave me stranded.

Still too cold for paint and it is going to be that way for the next 10 days. The only day the temp is going to be in the range it is windy and supposed to rain.

I will have it in the garage tomorrow to replace the universals on the driveshaft. Parts came in tonight. I have had it parked the past two days as the vibrations had gotten worse.

I remember why I don't like to ride the motorcycle in the winter. I rode home in sleeting 35 degree weather Thursday night. Sleet stings at 35mph and is much worse at 50. I am at the age where the cold hurts. I don't recover as quickly as I used to. And yes I have a heated vest and gloves but I don't have a full face helmet. Its everything else that hurts.
