Back to work....

Injectors arrived, hooray!

engine bay prepped some more
The battery tray needed some help so I cleaned, neutralized the acid with a baking soda paste/wash.

cleaned some more then coated with chassis saver to stop the rust

Engine bay prepped some more, stock steering shaft boot was torn in a few spots so I replaced it with one from a 2007 Ranger donor

The v6 engine mounts are in fantastic shape so we are going to keep them
All that is required is to drill one hold in the drivers side 5.0 engine mount plate
It is pretty easy to mark the location of the hole also, set in place and wiggle, it will mark itself. Center punch and drill, install engine plates back on the 302

Transmission was cleaned of debris/loose dirt and stabbed to the engine
This transmission has been drained, the converter was drained for weeks, remember this is a Ford reman at some point in its life
front pump seal is cleaned and lubed, converter hub is cleaned and lubed, converteis seated on the trans and trans was married to the 5.0

The whole enchilada is then hoisted and carefully set into the engine bay.. my stepson was visiting today so I took advantage of his offer to help and with two mechanics it is possible to get the correct angle and stab the engine and trans together

Tape, cardboard, blankets and then very carefully!!
The transmissionmust be at a pretty extreme angle to make it happen, this is a game of millimeters, only really possible with two people as you have to actually lift the front of the engine and pull down on the tail of the transmission at certain times to make it clear
The crank balancer and oil filter were removed, and the steering shaft disconnected to clear the header as it goes in
Have done this 10+ times so you pick up some tricks........

Engine and trans are in!

Next is wiring and plumbing..............power steering high pressure line and 07 fuel line to 01 fuel rail are the next challenges to over come
I love a challenge

It is pretty simple really, I just treat it as if it was my own

I dislike the way people (me) get treated at shops, so I set out to put an end to that and show people how a shop should treat you/your ride.... that was 25 years ago right when I inherited a certain 88 Bronco II

Thanks you!
We are just getting started here
Some obstacles to overcome now with the plumbing and wiring.........

heck yes
Been in wiring ville for a few days now
First I figured out the 07 to 01 fuel rail fuel line, super easy to make a simple fuel line.
Then I researched and solved the 07 steering rack to 98 5.0 steering pump high pressure line.
Then I started to map out the 07 wiring and compare to my 96-01 5.0 wiring. Now I have spent 3 going on 4 days researching/living/breathing/ the wiring for this conversion....looking at many options
I'm liking the idea of using a 2007 computer from another Ford with the 4.6 to run our 5.0 and keep the 07 truck CAN bus happy...stay tuned. It may or may not be possible.

Great work!
You obviously know your RBV, and nice attention to little details.

As someone whom is about to do the same exact swap, I think I am almost more excited than you guys.
Not really anyone wants to do the 05+ swap with a 302.
I have a 2000 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer with the 4R70W behind it. I have to rebuild the transmission. Then I have all the motor parts in my cart on Summit. Plus a few from my local Advance (thank god for being a pretty girl with a truck ;) )
Good job boys! Keep up the updating and the work!
I cannot wait to do mine!!

Woooo hoooo! I was thinking I was the only one crazy enough to put a pushrod in to a 07 but I guess not!! Nice!

You can do this!
I have made some super headway on the wiring and I have a plan of attack. More on that later.....

I ordered some more parts for our build here.....updates are coming

Crazy? Nah. We ain't crazy. Just outside the box thinkers!
Definitely let me know (if you don't mind) a step by step for the wiring. I imagine that will be my demise when I start on mine. Motors, suspension, drivetrain. That is my specialty. Wiring? pffftttt nah. ef that.

Let me know bubba! Good luck!!

I cannot wait to do mine!!

Excited barely describes it, and I running out of adjectives.

Having 410customs as the builder has allowed me to get nearly everything I could think up....except for the bullet proof glass and alligator seats... lol kidding aside.

This has been the best experience!! We are a few hundred miles apart but I get to watch it unfold along with the rest of the forum. In between updates I'm ordering little things and attempting small cosmetic projects and staying busy. Good things are coming to he who waits and I'm in no rush. As far as I'm concerned, 410customs is the best guy this side of the Mississippi!!

I've had more than a few people ask why I took my truck so far to get the work done. Anybody can swap out the powerplant an trans, but 410customs speaks RANGER and knows how to get everything communicating and happy and genuinely enjoys this.

I'm sure when I come to pick up the truck I'll have to fight the urge to get in and drive off not believing it's really my truck till I get it home....lol

Yup I trust him too, he's in to it. Nobody has done everything but if he doesn't know something he doesn't rest till he figures it out.

I understand that 100%. Your truck is safe with him.

110% safe here! Thanks for the words of encouragement!

Why are we not doing snake skin seats and a bulletproof glass? this is the first I have heard of this! Ill put it on the list.....

You guys rock!! had our first snow of the season and cold temps = lots of shop time!!

Wiring details coming up shortly, I had to get some pre winter stuff done so the shop is ready for winter.

Parts are coming in, pushrods are here, ordered a radiator and some plumbing parts, Gen III explorer power steering hose, rfuel line build it parts, etc etc. Details will be coming later this week...

Bring It!!
I cannot wait to install all of these goodies!
I think we have settled on a wiring path, or basically decided on what to control our drivetrain with. Waiting on one more piece of information first....... big updates are coming!

I cannot wait! Not gonna lie, waiting impatiently so I can make my plan for action on wiring up my 5.0 in the 2005.
Lucky for me, it will be a wee bit easier, as I do not have PATS or power windows and locks.
Which ecu are you guys going to run? and who is going to tune it? That is my only thing, I have difficulty trusting people with my truck. It is my baby and having that I've done all the work, makes me kinda weird about it haha :)

well guys the reason there has been no big updates on the 07 in the last few weeks is because of research, I have been going through all of the options for powering/wiring this 07 truck.
I could easily wire it up to be a 98 explorer power distribution, drivetrain wiring, pcm, etc. I could have done this weeks ago and had all the wiring ready to go by now....but Mr/ Magoo is a patient man and we are not in a rush so I took this opportunity to do some digging. I have been on EEC tuner forums, mustang forums, ranger forums etc searching for answers.

The problem with this is the 05+ can bus system will be lost, the instrument cluster, the smart power junction box, the restraints computer etc will have to go bye bye.
So I have been discussing and researching and have come to the point where we have 3 basic options:

1: wire the truck backwards to be a 98, this is a very good option and right up my alley since I have built many 96-01 style 5.0 conversions and their wiring. The work is easy, its all plug and play, park the explorer next to the ranger and start bolting in the wiring. I would of course still do a custom PCM and power harness, removing all the un needed wires and circuits.

2: Option 2 is to fool the 07 into thinking it came from the factory with a V8. The V8 offered in 2007 was the 4.6L in the F150. The 4.6L PCM CAN BE USED to run a pushrod 302. The ranger would think it was a 4.6 Ranger from Ford and all the Can bus systems would be happy. This is a crap shoot, hoping that it works, $$$$ down a hole if it does not. This would keep everything on the truck side of things 07 including the pcm location

3. #3 is still a secret and will likely be the route we take, but using a custom PCM that will run the 302 and the 4r70w and be fully tune-able in the truck. I might still have to wire the truck backwards to be a 98 as far as power distribution, dash and instrument cluster are concerned as this PCM may or may not work with the 05+ can bus system.

A custom aftermarket or "hybrid" (bastardized by me) instrument lcuster is very likely in this 07s future, keeping the stock 07 cluster with anything other then a 07-11 PCM would be near impossible

We will be pulling the trigger on one of these options VERY SOON, it has been ALOT of research and alot of work to decide I am waiting on one more answer and then we will know. I eat sleep and drink Ranger wiring and conversions. so to me this is fun, others call me a masochist :)
This may or may not be something others can do....every conversion is different. The good news for owners of 2005 and earlier trucks is they still have the 42 pin C110//112/115 plug under the hood so installing a 302 is not nearly as complex in those trucks.
It is the 06+ factory can bus system that may or may not be happy with the earlier PW1850 OBD system, I don't "play" with other people's money, so research is the key here. If I had a 4.6 F150 to play with I would love to try and make this 07 think it was a 4.6 F150 from the factory but run the explorer pushrod 302 instead.

I can run any 5.0 PCM from 96-01 explorer they are my favorite because the awesome gt40 302 with MAS and its coil pack ignition, fuel injection and the PCM controls the auto trans.. The 96-97.5 pcm is the easiest because there is no PATS, but the EGR is different, so you have to be careful which one you decide to use based on the plumbing and wiring goals of your conversion.

Okay it is settled we are planning to run with a custom
aftermarket PCM from Holley

Holley EFI 550-944 Terminator X Max Ford MPFI Kit w/ 98+ Transmission Control

This PCM is designed to work with the SBF and 4r70w and gives an in cab interface to control the tuning of engine and trans

SO MUCH WANT

However the Holley PCM is also designed to work with the Mustang TFI ignition, which we do not want. I do not want to put a distributor in this engine.
So we will upgrade the ignition to coilpack or coil near plug
The holley PCM requires two wideband 02 sensors and a map sensor, I might have to add a MAP sensor.
I am going to try and keep the truck side of things all 2007 until I cannot anymore.

Pulled the trigger on the PCM! My friend Brett is a Holley ignition dealer and he is headed to SEMA may be able to get us a deep discount.

In the meantime I have an actual update! WOOHOOO!! I have a 98 Explorer coming into the shop this afternoon to be ripped apart. Why is this an update? Because this 98 explorer is our rear axle donor as well as some other interior/wiring bits I need, keyless entry, EATC, and more.

Been working really hard this fall to finish up some other projects, firewood, shop organize, so we can focus on this 07 110%.....
The Bronco II rust repair and bedside install is done
Built a huge storage shelf system in the carport for auto parts to de - clutter the shop!
The shop is now a full 55' wide and 32' deep with room for parts and projects.
Bring on the snow!

Here we go! "Stage II" as I am calling it, suspension and gears......

pictures to follow

The Holley has arrived!!!! They shipped it to Brett, he re packaged and sent to me... he probably picked up two of these things knowing him.

Pics coming, progress will be made this weekend. Plans have changed SLIGHTLY
The 07 will be getting a NEW rebuilt 4r70w automatic, the low mile Ford reman that is in there now needs to go into another truck..............
So Eddie Money and I decided to use a Brett built 4r70w in his 07!!!

NOW I can start on the wiring...........I will lay out all the Holley parts and snap some pics!!
