Well since the transmission decided to smoke itself on the way home from work. Brought home on a wrecker. The 5 speed swap is underway sooner then I wanted it to.

Yeah always wanted a 5 speed 4x4 ranger. The donor truck I'm using was fun to drive

Good luck with the trans swap. My first Ranger was a 1996 & it was a 5 spd, but after I had knee surgery it is automatics in my dd from now on.

Or pull the wheel off and hit it with a wire-brush then hit it with some rustoleum.

Got the donor truck apart today. See blue beater thread. Next weekend will be the tear down of Whiety and the 5 speed conversion. Any help or advice with this conversion would be appreciated

This weekend will start my 5 speed swap. With the help of 410customs on guiding me through the wiring of the pats system this should be easy

There is no pats on the 98. Pats started in 99 for the ranger and only in the V6 models the 4 cyl did not have pats till 01.

Yes but he is going to use the 5 speed PCM from the 2000 donor to make the swap complete, and like factory.
Otherwise the 98 pcm will freak out when it does not see the auto trans and I am not into "fooling" the computer with resistors, etc. The spark/air/fuel mapping is different from a auto to a 5 speed. The best way to do the conversion when you have the complete donor truck is to use the 2000 pcm also....so he is going to swap steering columns (keeping his 98 multi function switch), swap pedal assemblies and install the pats/key and PCM from the donor.
:)

If he is really crafty he will grab the door lock cylinders and tailgate lock cylinder so he can swap his 98 over to use the 2000 key 100%. I am also hoping to  a 04 Ranger style SOHC clutch used, you have to drill and tap 6 holes in the 98+ OHV flywheel or use a SOHC flywheel.....the larger sohc clutch gives you a WAY better clutch pedal feel and way more grip behind the ohv
I have been outside clearing land and working on new to me mini excavator and bulldozer while answering text from Black06xlt I live and breathe Ford trucks! I would have it no other way!!! Only thing better would be if we were all working on this here in my shop together!!

I know a machine shop with a couple CNC mills to accurately drill and tap that flywheel.

I have scored an 04 sohc flywheel from work in the engine warehouse. Feel kinda sorry for the guy that buys that engine. The 2004 clutch came in yesterday. Already removed the pats harness from the 2000 dash. And on a stupid moment I sold the doors from the 2000 before removing the door locks. So I'm kinda going old school Ford with 2 keys. Adds a certain nostalgia to it. That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it.

Just an update..... the new 5 speed transmission is ready to in. Tonight i have to drill out a broken starter bolt from the bell housing and remove the o2 sensor wires from the old automatic transmission harness. Lastnight I swapped out my center consoles and changed the plate on the floor for the 5 speed.

Whitey is now a 5 speed. Drive shafts exhaust and transfer case is all that is left. Well I need to go to the pull a part to get the little clip that holds the clutch linkage to the pedal. I seemed to have lost the one from the donor

The swap is complete!!!!!!!!!! I give it a 5 on the pain in the ass scale... With the help of 2 friends Jamman and 410customs guiding me through the wiring it was easy. I thank you guys!!!!! Next order of business is typical Ranger stuff noticed a spot on the frame by the rear spring hanger that's getting thin so rear frame replacement is next. Oh at work today I picked up a nice flowmaster dual catback. What fun is a stick shift if wont talk to you?

Can't wait to see how it works!

You didn't throw those automatics away yet did you... I need a TC solenoid LOL.

Good job on the swap :)

Got the driveshafts in and the exhaust is on not tight but one. Still have a wire to splice together on the tcase and go over everything. Then take it off the stands and start banging gears

Just read the last posts of the thread, good to hear you got the 5 speed in. I love mine... so much more than an automatic... just the "Talk Back" is worth the effort and anyone in a automatic can't say they understand, because they just don't sound as good as a manual shifted vehicle.

I know... My 06 is a 4.0 automatic with headers and a flowmaster dual catback. Its sounds really good. Ever since I did the swap on my 98 I've been tempted to take the exhaust off my 06. Cause I know it would sound 10 times better on my 98. But wensday at work I was able to snag a flowmaster dual catback off a dodge Dakota. That's next weekends project on the white unit. Sometime in the next few weeks I'm going to order a set of headers for it. What good is a stick if you dont have pipes for it???
