OK guys we are back from a "mini" vacation over the Thanksgiving weekend. We took the day before Thanksgiving off & left work early on Tuesday & drove to Virginia to start the kitchen/Dining Room reconstruction. We tore out all the old insulation, I added new insulation, got most of the Kitchen & about 1/2 of the Dining Room sheet rocked, added a couple GFCI outlets, moved one outlet, & added a couple new outlets. While I was doing that my wife painted the walls of the three bedrooms, & covered all the windows & the sliding glass door with the window insulation kits for this winter until we can get them replaced to save energy since they are old & leaked air badly. Here are some pics to go with the descriptions. Our next trip is planned for the middle of January when we are supposed to get all the kitchen cabinets, the stove delivered, & finish the sheetrock.
New insulation,

Sheetrock,

Master bedroom painted,

2nd bedroom painted,

Mike, you are making better progress on your project than I am on mine!  Painted my kitchen and it needs a second coat (WTF?). Went to menards to get more paint and the guy at the paint counter said the other guy mixed it wrong with the wrong base!  Not sure how I am going to proceed. Waiting for wifey to get back so we can discuss our options. Anyways, glad to see you are making great progress! :-)

Well done! When you are adding new outlets have you considered adding any of the newer style 120V outlets that have built in USB chargers? We love them! Placed in the proper locations they are very handy....everything is powered by a USB port these days it seems

I am getting ready to do insulation myself..... my arms itch just looking at your pics :)

Michael, my wife works at Home Depot & has mixed paint before & she says if you want the new batch of paint to match have them mix it again with the wrong base or it will not match or the other option is you will have to repaint the whole kitchen.

Jamie, my wife already has them I just have to install them. I had no itching problem installing the insulation, I used Owens/Corning faced pink R-13.

@Mike, thanks for that bit of info!  They mixed the paint with the wrong base, which was semi-gloss as opposed to satin, which is what we always use.  The semi-gloss is too shiny for my taste.  Wife got back home this morning, so I will discuss this with her when I get home tonight.  Looks like I will be painting the kitchen all over again (the cut-in is what takes so much time).

Just to update, my wife Robin & I were back in Virginia at our other house doing more work this past weekend & Monday & Tuesday. We finished the sheet rocking, taping & spackling in the kitchen & Dining Room, Robin painted the hallway to the bedrooms & the entry hallway. Tuesday all the new Kitchen cabinets were delivered, we unboxed them & inspected them. We also laid down a new 1/4" plywood sub floor that we glued & screwed down over the old linoleum that we could not get up to act as a new base for the new finished floor that will be installed after the base cabinets are installed. Here are some new pics.

Yea Michael we did. We worked Saturday afternoon, Sunday, Monday, & Tuesday all day from before the sun came up in the morning to about 5:00 in the afternoon. The appliances are getting delivered in 2 weeks, & we have to be there for the delivery, & then we are taking a weeks vacation in the end of March to install the cabinets.

OK Michael, this update is for you & the rest of the people here. We were "supposed" to get all of our appliances delivered Friday 2/5 in two separate deliveries, so we drove to our Virginia house Wednesday to do some work there also. All that was delivered was the clothes washer. So we primed the bare sheetrock walls & the ceiling, painted the top coat on the walls & the ceiling & hung almost all the wall cabinets. Due to the snow storm that was going to hit southern Va. Saturday night into Sunday, we left Saturday 9:30am instead of very early Sunday to get home before the rain & snow started. Here are some pics. Next trip is 3/20 - 3/28.

Coming right along, I see!  I ordered appliances for my kitchen renovation in July and they were finally available for pickup in November.  They are still in the garage as I am not as fast as you and your wife. LOL  They will be the last thing to do in our kitchen.  Too cold here to work on the counter tops I have yet to finish.

Color is all about personal tastes.  When it comes to a kitchen, that is usually the woman's domain, so it should be a color of her choosing.  I'm sure there are plenty of people in the world that would question the color choice we made for our kitchen.  This isn't a particularly good picture, but should convey the color (no, it's not finished yet).

Great progress, makingg the best of the time you have when over there.

My GF chose Orange! for the living room and kitchen but it turned out great, very "warm" and cosy. Turns out she knows what she's doing.

Thank you Mike!  It has been slow going.  I am currently replacing the counter tops, but have to do all the set up and cutting in the (unheated) garage.  It was so cold out there, I was afraid to take them out there for fear of dimensional changes caused by temperature and humidity differences.  This coming weekend isn't looking any better, so mama is waiting patiently for me to finish.  I may fast-forward to the flooring which I could do even if it is zero outside.  It is hard trying to renovate a room while it is still in use!

The house we are currently living in we re did the kitchen while we were living here, what a pita. That is why we purchased the "new to us home" early so we can do the renovations while not living there.

OK guys we are back from our week at our house in Virginia. My wife Robin & I finished installing the kitchen cabinets, we also had to move one of the kitchen hvac floor vents, we painted the living room, got the front & side entry & storm doors replaced, had the stove delivered & hooked up, all the rest of the appliances were delivered & hooked up, the counter guy came & did the template for the kitchen granite counter tops, ran a water line to the refrigerator & hooked up the ice maker, finished the hot & cold water lines to the kitchen sink, installed the farmers sink, & did a temp install on the kitchen faucet. We are also starting to replace all of the outlets in the house since they all have been painted over. We were able to get them all replaced in the living room. We even had some time ion Friday btw which was a beautiful 82 degrees & sunny day so we took a ride & purchased a big screen T.V. for the house.

Since you aren't there all the time, does it have some kind of security?  Even something as simple as a Ring light in the driveway?  Of course you would have to have WiFi and internet there for that, but just wondering

Dang, Mike... you two really get a  lot accomplished when you're there.  Looks great, and I LOVE that entry way (front door?) floor!  Is that a JennAir downdraft range I see in your kitchen pics?

I took off 3 days around this past weekend (Friday, Monday and Tuesday).  Laid the tile floor, installed new quarter molding, installed the new electric range and dishwasher and assembled the new dining table and chairs (cheap set that fits the decor theme... will find something better quality later).  Funny thing is, Friday morning I had started laying tile and had a bit of it done when I busted my left pointer finger wide open with a rubber mallet (full force hit).  Blood went up the wall I was next to almost reaching the ceiling.  Bled all over everything.  Since I was home alone (wife out of town to stay out of my way) I patched it up, put on a rubber glove and continued to lay the floor, albeit, somewhat slower.  I use a rubber mallet and a smooth block of soft wood to "set" the tiles to ensure contact.  I am SO glad to have this project done!

Yes, we installed & set up a Simply Safe security system.

Thanks Michael. I sliced a finger open many years ago when trimming peel & stick tile in a bathroom. This time someone else is laying the finished floor, my knees can not take it any more.
