 Ok sooo there's a autocross even in June I'd like to go to. I got two options 

1: my 2003 ranger 2.3
Dropped on a djm kit. 
I got QA1 coil overs for the back (still need to put them on.
It's got 17” expo rims wrapped in Continental pure Contact Tires. 

The truck handles great, stops good just doesn't have a stones for the straits. 

Now my next option. 
1989 foxbody. 
Really the only good thing is that it's got a 347 under the hood. Stock breaks, stock steering, stock everything besides being lowered. 
A posi outback
Currently sitting on some cobra 17” rims with ok tires. 
I got a set of 4 piston brembos for the front, just need to switch the car over to 5 lug. Could use a new steering rack since the inner tie rods got play and the SN95 cars got better power assist valving inside it. 

I have no clue what the course looks like, how fast it is, I just want to go have fun!

 Just seems like you might like more ground clearance and suspension travel than either of your posted options...

Really? I mean both sit low but neither  scrape pulling into parking lots or driveways.

 I've never been to an autocross event but know that lots of people enjoy them in Miatas which are certainly not power monsters so I would say bring the vehical with the best handling and brakes.

Autocross is not like Motocross
Autocross is most often a single car at a time on short courses between cones on flat asphalt. Race against the clock, emphasis is on handling/technique.

Most autocross (or autoX) are very low and stiff for the short technical courses.


I would take the ranger.
Then when it's not fast enough for you anymore put the mustang engine in it.

You might end up like this: (please do it :) )
He started with an old 1990 ranger on a budget and ended up with a v8, SLA front, IRS rear, 14 inch brakes etc... etc...
Mean AutoX Ranger

Or build the foxbody... but doesn't seem "nimble" for autocross ( then again, neithet is a Ranget lol..)

 I helped a guy convert his mazda b4000 to a b5000 AWD for ice racing and autocross events
He does pretty well competing with the evo's and sti's
There are plenty of things you can do to a ranger to get it good at short course racing against the clock, the v8 and AWD really really helps





The grassroots ranger is awesome! It has been modded way beyond what shows up in that article. I love grassroots racing and homebrew ranger based race trucks competing with the "tuner" cars

 If I were to change up my 2003 (which I am making some plans just gotta figure out how I want to do it) I'll keep the 2.3 and just slap a turbo on it. Maybe 5 psi of boost nothing major. I do have a v8 31 spline 3.73 lsd axle for it as well. I'd bet that would make for a autocross killer.
