Autocross is not like Motocross
Autocross is most often a single car at a time on short courses between cones on flat asphalt. Race against the clock, emphasis is on handling/technique.
Most autocross (or autoX) are very low and stiff for the short technical courses.
I would take the ranger.
Then when it's not fast enough for you anymore put the mustang engine in it.
You might end up like this: (please do it :) )
He started with an old 1990 ranger on a budget and ended up with a v8, SLA front, IRS rear, 14 inch brakes etc... etc...
