The circuit flashes the bulb. But, as you found out, it is NOT 12V... more like 3 maybe.

Yeah, that's how they look! Posted a link to a new bulb on eBay if you don't have a spare handy.

Got a spare. Bought 2 anyway, maybe I can figure out the voltage so I can feed it with my tester thingy.
Thanks-

The ones I bought

Here's that mountaineer cluster I've been playing with, native blue, with the 20 SMD LED's. Still a dull spot around 40MPH, keegans strip light looks much cleaner. This isn't bad for stock-

You sure you don't have an SMD failing?

No I tried like 3 in there it seems to be a natural dead spot. Maybe some spider poop or a dead bug lol.

Still 3 times brighter than stock. I tried the same LED's in a green one and it was dull by comparison.

Kinda hate to strip the film and use green LED's on mine because I don't think the odometer would look good green. Plus I've heard the pointers don't look good green. Maybe a really bright strip I dunno have to try.

Problem with using colored LEDs is that your needles won't illuminate properly.

Out of curiosity I stuck a cree flashlight behind a green overlay and it didn't get much brighter. The green film is the problem I wonder if there is something I could paint them with after stripping.

Sucks!

The blue one is almost twice as bright with the same LED's.

Here's my white face green cluster (soon to be NOT green).

EDIT: These are NOT white LEDs... a very light blue.

Here's one of the entire cluster.  Notice how it doesn't show the RED blocks at the ends of the minor gauges?  That is because I have those blue bulbs.

I certainly have enough clusters to play with, I'll eventually come up with something I like.

I'm starting to like the blue one but it is against my grain. Everything else is green.

Hmmmm maybe bright yellow LED's behind the blue?

Just bought some yellow 5SMD 5050's just out of curiosity to put behind the blue, see if it turns green.

Something is bound to "stick out". There has to be some needle tricks too, different reflective coatings you can put on the back, perhaps fiber optics or something.

Simply fascinated by these clusters.

Clusters can be fun to mess with.

Just curious: I have a white faced cluster from a 2001 Expo Sport. I put my original odometer in it to keep the mileage correct, rather that roll the one in the white face.  Since I am getting ready to recolor my cluster, I was going to reset the original odometer to my current mileage so it would match (black digits on white background).  Problem is, I went to my other clusters (have 4 of them) and NONE of the odometers are black digits on white background.  Did Ford do a white face cluster with an odometer having white digits on black background? None of the pics I see have the black background odometer on a white face cluster.

Very curious to see what you end up with on the colour changes, but i'm also wondering why you have that dead spot, i'm almost 100% certain i do not have a dead spot there using 5xSMD (5050) on mine.

Ok, I'm going to get a little technical now. In total after 98, there were 5 different variations of the gauges that had a tachometer. From most common to hardest to find they are:

1. The black one with a black surround, white needles, and white numbers on a black background.

2. The white one ( in explorer sports, sport tracks, and Ranger Tremors) which had a lighter silver surround, orange needles with black caps, white numbers and a black background.

3. A simular white one (also in explorer sports and sport tracks, not in Rangers) that had orange needles with a silver cap, a darker silver surround, and black numbers on a white background.

4. The silver gauges. Came in 2003 trucks trim level XLT or higher and some Sport Tracks ,(no one online can match them to a trim level). These have a black surround, orange needles with black caps, and white numbers with a black background.

5. The Mazda cluster. This one only came in Mazdas, and sadly I do not know Mazda trims so I do not know what it came in. It is pretty much a black cluster with orange needles (I believe with a black cap) and the darker silver surround.

FYI my cluster is made out of a combo of #2,3, and 4.

That dull spot is the reason I swapled in LED strips.

These optics are more complex than you would guess at first. There are special compiter programs that some poor soul spent good years of his or her life to get right. The bulbs have to be positioned a certain way to get that light output perfect (ever notice how on all cars the bulb filaments are always perpendicular to the ground?) And the gauge backing have varying thicknesses of tint so that the light flow is even.

The stock bulbs were a pain for Ford's supplier to get perfect, and with LEDs you are storming in yelling F*** THE SYSTEM and putting bulbs that have a very different range than what the optics were designed for in. This (hopefully obviously at this point) new bulb has crazy different light outputs at different angles, and putting it into a perfectly designed optic for a different type of bulb will never light everything up as well or evenly as the bulb that was chosen by the person who gave years of their life away and knew very well what they were doing.

And that is also why I am against anything but the stock bulbs (HID or LED, or others) in our light housings. Or any others in that case.

Okay, that explains it. I thought I was losing my mind when I couldn't find an odometer with black on white.  I thought all white face clusters had black on white.  Thanks Keegan!

Wow we are collecting some serious cluster tech this is going to look great on the tech articles pages. I don't think I have seen a collection of info like exists in this thread in one single spot on the internet.

Now we need some square wave pulse generating device to pre calibrate speedometers after needle removal. LOL! What's the frequency of 60 MPH?

Get Bill or Anthony on that one!

BTW, I just set my GPS @50mph and pop the needle on...

133.3333Hz

Most Fords are set to 8000 pulses per mile. So 60*8000 Pulses equals 480000 Pulses per hour. Divide by 3600 seconds=133.33Hz

It's 2.2222Hz per MPH.

I used an arduino to generate the 50% duty cycle when I was trying to make a speed correction device. Still seemed a little off. Maybe because the arduino only generates a 5V signal instead of 12V.

Anyway you can generate a speed and check it using forscan. Then you can manipulate the frequency to where you get a solid mph, like 60.

You would think they would do 12000 pulses an hour just to make the math easier. :)

Thanks Anthony, since I only have forscan on my kids laptop I'll have to figure something out. He's running a minecraft server on his and of course that trumps my mere speedo calibration.

I have an old dell with an I3 laying around and a small SSD guess I'll have to bend to the microsoft gods and load windows if I want to start figuring out the finer points of forscan.
