Found this one, looks good, plastic and not a lot of protrusion out the back or inside the bed.
One wire, ground interrupt circuit.
Grounding through mounting hardware, cut off pin for fitment !

Added:  Will need to check the size vs the room between the lip of the Bed and the Tailgate Edge.

My '03 Ranger doesn't have a BONNET OPEN SWITCH, I do have an auto off for the interior lights... LoL !

I think Jim's idea of the Tailgate Indicator is a good one, we just need to iron out how !

To me the switch is everything.

Chris, any links  ?

Honestly, that looks to me like the perfect switch for said project.

Thanks Chris, still thinking on this one with a grounding circuit.
The Plunger can be cut to fit, not sure of the amount of movement I need but I will check out what the switch will do before hand.

"The Perfect Switch" is in the eyes of the beholder !

I wanted something with minimal exposure in the bed but that is asking a lot.
The one posted above is about 3/4 to 1" in the bed, if I keep it to the side enough it might work.
We will see once I get there.

I can tell you from experience that those pin switches suffer from corrosion on the contact surfaces even when used internally - I have given up replacing the door switches on my MG cos they stop working in a few months.

Thx Chris,
I will see what else is out there.
The only problem that can come up with the one I chose is the contacts, the Pin is plastic and the body of this one looked tight.

Back to the drawing board.

Well y'all have talked me out of using the tilt switch I bought for the tailgate. I'll still use it for the hood but since the tailgate can come off you would need a disconnect also. I have a box of waterproof disconnect plug and sockets but will use a switch. Maybe LOL the fit on my tailgates is not a door quality fit.

I was thinking about that AND if the truck is bouncing around on a rough road, would the tilt switch do a on/off/on/off thing  ?

I think the blunger switch would work, I am looking at that one I posted and see how waterproof it might be and what size it is overall, maybe a drawing of the switch and all the dimensions.

I have left mt tail gate open before, I lucked out none of the tools in the bed fell out, and me with no bed cover.

The roughest road I encounter is the construction getting on to 270 from stringtown rd.

No you would not use mercury or ball position switches on a prerunner.

Lol - you would probably weld the tailgate shut for extra stiffness .... :'(

No you would not use mercury or ball position switches on a pre-runner.

I wouldn't build a pre-runner or desert truck so thats out !
The road I live off of is 1.3 miles to my driveway and it is dirt and NOT maintained by local government or even county, so it gets bad real quick in the wet seasons.   My driveway is another 1/4 mile long, but it is maintained by me and ti is relatively smooth, a good drive compared to the Road we live off of.
Just the drive in to the driveway would have the a mercury or ball switch bouncing around, that is why I am going to use a plunger type switch.  I did think your idea of the tilt switch in the tailgate was a good one but I figured you would have a switch that didn't require moving part inside of it !

My Off-Roading, is trails, some rougher than others but no large rocks, but they too would raise havoc with a switch with movable internals.

A good option on a Pre-runner or Race truck but of course not an option for a DD, especially one where the bed is used daily and then the switches become a mote point !

The Plunger Type Switch wins out overall, even if it needs to be replaced more often.

Dont make ms go all PLC on you guys....

Best setup would be a prox sensor hooked to a digital input and would withstand an earthquake with constant salt spray. You could even set up debounce  so if you hit a brick wall you wouldn't get a false reading.

Last one I set up had to withstand magnetic pulses from a 200HP electric motor required a special connector and double shielded cable. prox sensor FTW.

Crap need 24V. Never mind.
