Best setup would be a prox sensor hooked to a digital input and would withstand an earthquake with constant salt spray. You could even set up debounce  so if you hit a brick wall you wouldn't get a false reading.

Last one I set up had to withstand magnetic pulses from a 200HP electric motor required a special connector and double shielded cable. prox sensor FTW.

Crap need 24V. Never mind.
