The forum sends mails from a number of different actions - if you watch a forum or watch a topic you get different notifications - I changed the software so that if you watched a forum, you did not get the same notification from a topic in that forum.

It uses various conditionals to determine what to send and if you change one it can change how it reacts to another - getting it to behave is not straightforward . We test changes on a test forum but that doesn't always replicate the real world with real users!

Anyway, I have set up an email monitor now so I can keep an eye on what it is up to and hopefully track down what is causing the hiccoughs.

As for the new post ranger antics, I think this is due to issues with browsers and cookies - a different issue to the email notification one.

Yeah, the new post thing was kind of weird. I am using the same browser (Firefox) as I was on day one. Then one day, it started acting up. It seems to be fine now, so don't know if you did something to fix it or if it was just a fluke.

Thank you for looking into this and your efforts Chris, it's appreciated.

No problem - that is what we are here for - just tell us if there is something not right and we will try to fix it - but we do manage to break things occasionally - or the browsers do it for us ...

Thanks. I actually mentioned an item awhile back (maybe two, ?), nothing ever happened so I was leaning on just letting things go and seeing if anyone else noticed. In fact this is why I bit my tongue on saying anything about the email for so long. What I don't know is if only Michael and myself are affected, or if it's widespread.

I noticed the reply when I asked about porting in previous functions in the forum software. I remember quite some time ago when a (former) founder, owner and admin of a very large and very much alive and well traveled Ford truck forum tried to be oh-so clever and import a feature into a new version of forum software. Little know to him at first, was how his effort allowed many of us into the *secret* admin and moderator forums. The comments made by this owner regarding several members what pretty wicked but what made for even better was reading what was said about some of their mods ("never to be trusted" as an example). Of course we got temporarily banned for admitting to having access to these forums (owner finally calmed down and took his meds, lol), but who the hells fault was that and who wouldn't go read, LOL!!!!!! Gotta be careful with importing select features. :)

Importing things from outside is always fraught with danger - even just tweaking existing code can introduce unexpected results!

Hopefully the mail issue is sorted - I have been scanning the mails sent out from the server since the last hiccough and they now seem to be OK - hopefully you have seen the last of the unwanted mails - I haven't seen anything going to you since the other day.

Chris, the mail issue appears to be resolved for me... nothing from "myself"! Thanks, man! :)

Emails...I noticed in this thread that on my last post, when I edited it.....there was that damn box RE email notifications automatically checked, I didn't do it, I caught it and got rid of it. Why this?

Edit: and for kicks I'm editing this post and here we go, the "
Notify me by e-mail when replies are posted to this topic" is by default, checked. Why?

Test edit.

Is it possible to just turn off all attempted automated emailings of any kind? Leave the emailing to a user making a deliberate effort to check the email notification boxes, go into their account preferences and check "Always notify by e-mail when replies posted to topics you participated in", or deliberately opt to send a communication via email? Sorta like opting in rather than opting out. :)

Edit: yes on this test, the "
Notify me by e-mail when replies are posted to this topic" did not auto check itself. Nice! :D

That is exactly what it should be doing - the setting of that checkbox was missed when we changed the default setting from on to off,

Should work right now - you may need to hit ctrl +f5 to reload the page properly.

I have noticed if you go back to edit a recent reply the check box is populated by default. - Nope not today.

Just tried it and it didn't auto populate. It did it to me twice yesterday???

Not sure if it's been mentioned, but would it be possible to have it show the image preview after you select the file instead of having to wait until reply posts. A small thumbnail.
Also is it possible to have it auto resize your images? I'm not a computer person by no means, might not even be possible. Just an idea or 2.
