built this from a truck i rolled and was using for parts, more pics in my flickr link in signature. the frame is a 97, box, back bumper and axle are from the 94 i currently drive. yes, it might pull easier with a trailer axle over a stock 7.5 with gears/gear oil still in it but the 7.5 is rated at 3,000 pounds so thats better than the 2,000 pound "trailer" straight axle i could buy. plus if id ever need that 7.5 with the 3.45 gears, i know right where it is.

just weighed mine today, since trailer licence fees for non-commercial trailers are based on weight of trailer, i took off everything i could to make it weigh as little as possible. no side racks or cap, no tailgate, no toolbox or rear bumper, and i took off my 235/15 tires on the 15x8 steel rims and put on some skinny 13" rims/tires. i even tiik the brake drums off of the ranger axle when i changed tires. i considered buying a "trailer axle" to save even more weight but thats $100 that i dont think would be worth the licence fee reduction. plus id be replacing a 3,000 pound rated axle for a 2,000 pound axle. even if i really would be ok with a 2,000 pound axle, its nice to know i have plenty of "overloading" reserve with the stock 7.5 ranger rear end. weight as i "stripped" it down to was 748 pounds. no doubt id be over 800 with bumper, brake drums, bigger tires, tailgate & toolbox. sure, i only saved a few bucks to be in the 700-800 pound range, but every bit helps. and i can fix a few things while its all apart. (like how the toolbox wasnt quite level when the trailer bed was)

Dang 750 that is pretty good!!

That is the ONLY issue with old truck/frame trailers is they get so heavy.
Nothing is more handy then a small trailer
With the old ranger bed you get a real frame, parking brake ability, tail lights and wiring. Smart move
Welcome to FR's.com!!

I like the idea of the Ranger Bed for a Trailer, even a short bed would make good hauler but the frame is my problem... !

back together and ready for work. fresh paint, bigger "flotation" tires, tool box on (and level now) side racks back on.

I like ether Lumber Yard on top, I had a Rack Similar to that on my '88 for a while.
the wife referred to it as the Cattle Truck.

The extra room in front is great for the extra box without taking away from the Bed area, nice touch !

Now if we can just get the size of teat frame down some... LoL !

Lookin good !

the toolbox is great for when i use the trailer to cut wood, the saw and related gear goes in the box, and can stay there out of the weather. the extra toungue weight is needed too. with nothing on the front of the frame, if you sit on the tailgate the hitch leaves the ground fast, and i left plenty of frame ahead of the bed to make the tounge with.
