So on my 98 Ranger the a/c is cooling properly. It gets down close to 40 out the center vent. However, it only does that when the vehicle is stopped or idle. Whenever your foot is on the gas the a/c still blows out the vents but the temperature jumps up about 15 degrees. It sometimes almost completely quits blowing when accelerating under a heavy load up a hill. Of course I thought my vacuum hose came off again on the heater valve since I recently replaced it. The original vacuum lines are so brittle that they always break off and now I've got it patched with some very small diameter vacuum hose. It's always worked for probably 10 years. I checked and all the hoses are connected and the vacuum reservoir hoses are connected. Is this more than likely a blend door actuator going out or is it more likely there is a vacuum line problem? It does have 399,000 miles on it and I've never changed the blend door actuator. I just know it's kinda hard to get to the screws on it so I haven't replaced it.

I'm running into a very similar issue on my 98. I am 99% sure it is a check valve.

Any idea where the check valve is? It's definitely vacuum related. When similar situations happened before I use to go check the heater control valve vacuum hose and it would be off. The hose has become so brittle everytime I'm working in that area of the truck it breaks another piece off. But this time I checked it and it's connected. It is strange though I just replaced the heater control valve and I don't think it was happening before this.

Guys, there is a vacuum canister (ball shaped) on the right hand side under the hood down near the wheel.  There is a check valve either in the canister supply end or at the end of the line that connects to it.  If the ball gets cracked, or that check valve sticks open, when the vacuum breaks during acceleration, you will lose your HVAC control.  Jim knows more about this than I do, so if you don't understand the way I described it, PM Mr. JAMMAN and he can give you better description and details.

It is an integral part of the ball, if it is bad you can replace the ball OR get a much cheaper in line check valve.
