 Was thinking, I'm going to take my bed off this winter for a number of reasons. My shackles are not "that bad" but while I have the bed off I could put on a set I bought from Adam here at F-R avoiding doing it in a couple years.

It might take a while with my 1/4" die grinder and a 3" cutoff wheel, what are you pros using to remove the original rivets with?

 4.5" grinder with grinding wheel (not cut off wheel)
Grind the rivet head down flat until you can see the circle of the hole through the frame. Then one punch with hammer and punch and the rivet is out.
Takes seconds, not minutes this way

 ah the blue wrench! I love my torch but I'm much better with a grinder....need more torch time.
I have two grinders one corded and my new favorite is the dewalt brushless 20V.....so   handy

grinder is one of my most used tools I had a black and decker for years....then I killed it. Got a makita killed it. Got a hitachi killed it. Then I learned that tile setters use a brand called "metabo" and I bought one. Holy crap! The metabo spinds at like twice the speed. You cant kill the Metabo. So if you want a corded angle grinder get a metabo they are super super awesome. Like life changing awesome, anytime somebody asks "what brand grinder" I get to jump in and tell this story. Metabo makes all others look WEAK!!



Otherwise the dewalt battery powered does most jobs and is one of my fav tools. the dewalt stuff I have been beating on and beating on.... no more cords!!

 Jim, the 4.5" angle grinder with a grinder wheel is what I used when I did mine a few years ago. I ground off the head of the rivet & then just used a punch & drove the rest of the rivet out of the frame, & bolted on the new ones, just like Jamie suggested above.

 Just curious; how hard is it to get the bed off? I have the flare side. Can two guys lift it off and set it aside, or does it weigh too much? I need to take my bed off this coming summer to replace the RH cab corner. At the same time, I will be looking at the bed floor and spring shackles. The bed is the part that worries me.

 two dudes = too easy
One dude can do it with enough ooooommph and some ingenuity (like a few boards, a cherry picker, ropes from the ceiling, floor jacks and blocks of wood, etc)

When there is a will there is a way
The ranger beds are not that heavy

 Ah, thanks Jamie! ArcticWolf is a pretty stout young man and I WILL make him an indentured slave to help get the bed off! :) My truck is a 2003 living in the rust belt (Southern Indiana). Should I just change the shackles even if they look okay while the bed is off?

 Michael, my wife & I can remove the bed off my 00 Ranger using some marine grade rope tied to the inside bed hooks in an "X" pattern & my engine hoist. My wife operates the engine hoist while I guide the bed up, once it clears the rear bumper I hold the bed steady & she jumps in the truck & pulls it forward & then we set the bed on a pair of saw horses. When we stood the bed on the front panel so I could coat the bottom of the replacement bed I just ran a chain across the 2 rear in bed tie down hooks & lifted it with the engine hoist until it was clear of the saw horses then with my wife operating the hoist again I steadied the bed while she let the hoist down setting it on the front panel.

 Cool. Thanks Mike! Although I don't have a hoist, my son (ArticWolf) is young and strong, so together I think we will be able to manage it. I plan on getting a pair of folding saw horses to set the bed on while I take care of the cab corner and whatever else shows up needing attention.

 You are welcome Michael. Make sure while you have the bed off your Ranger to check out the cross supports that are welded to the under side of the bed, as mine were badly rotted away & the bed floor was rotting away where all the spot welds were.
