My seatbelt alarm and speed sensitive wiper feature doesn't work on my 98 Ranger. I tried swapping out the buckle which I got from an Explorer and it worked correctly for about 6 months. I can't remember the last time my speed sensitive wiper feature has worked. I was told it needed a GEM module. If you buy the new Ford one by VIN will it be a plug and play or is there flashing like an ECM? Or could I even get a used one with the same features only. Mine has no cruise control, no factory fog lights, power windows, lock, or mirrors.

I don't think they can be flashed or not easily anyway. The key is getting one with features your truck had. I have one in a 2000 that is from a "fancier" truck so a scan always shows an error for window relays. I don't have electric windows on that particular one.

Do you know the particular gem codes it is getting? Someone may have swapped your gem out in a previous ranger life LOL.

No I don't think it's ever been swapped. I've had the truck since it was new. I don't know the numbers on the original one. Mine doesn't have any power accessories and it still shows the one-touch down error too.

I got the used CTM module for my 98 Ranger today. I ordered the number on the Ford website by my VIN which was F87B-14B205-AD. On the Ford website it says F87Z-14B205-AD but when I did a search on the number on Ebay that's the module that came up and I ordered it. I installed it in a few minutes. The only reason I replaced it was because I had some GEM module codes, one of which was the Seat Belt Alarm code, which doesn't work, but also the speed sensitive feature of the wipers. When I installed the used one and connected the battery and started the truck I saw that at least now the seat belt symbol light comes on when started but only for 2-3 seconds and then goes away. There is no chime and it doesn't come back on. The ignition key left in works and the lights on chime works. Is this the wrong module or bad seat belt switch?

I don't think it is the belt switch, but that is easy to check just disconnect the connector (so you can still use the seat belt) and drive for a few seconds. If it doesn't start complaining then there is either a short elsewhere (perhaps under the truck almost under the driver seat that big square mystery connector) or it is the gem. I don't have an EVTM for that year you can probably put an ohmmeter on 2 of the wires at the gem and clip/unclip the belt to see if it is physically working all the way from the gem to the belt switch.

I read on that other Ford Ranger forum that the belt minder function can be turned off, maybe the belt minder function is turned off.

Mike if you can find a list of the user manipulable functions without forscan it would be interesting. I remember when programming my new remotes just using the truck I ran across a few others I don't quite remember. I believe timing of the delay for the interior lights is one of them but not sure. And beeps after lock.

I reinstalled the original GEM module and tried to rewrite it using Forscan and it stopped halfway through and said service interrupted. That was the AS Built option. I tried it the other way where user defines specs. I chose the 225/70/14 tire size as it came with originally and tried to rewrite it and it again went halfway through the rewrite procedure and it said service interrupted. I still have two codes. I don't remember the code number. But I know one was for the accessory delay relay and the other was a seat belt switch code. I did a component test on the gem and when it was testing everything it did turn on the seat belt light, so the lamp isn't out, the chime did not come on. On the used GEM I got it would only flash the seatbelt light upon startup for about 4 seconds and that's it. So I swapped my old GEM back and it doesn't even turn on the seat belt light at all. I'm going to get another seat belt buckle this weekend from the salvage yard just to try since they are only $4.
