There is a definite difference in the V6 vertical plug coils and the horizontal plug coils.

I'm still gathering information but you cannot swap them with the plug wires in the same location.

I have verified so far the vertical plug model is:

Motorcraft # dg535

Horizontal is:

Motorcraft # dg533

I believe it is a firing order thing and they should be able to be swapped if you know which nub to put which wire on.

I found out my 3.0 truck is way off, the wires are not in any order known to man it does not match any pattern.
I will dig until I find out the truth.

FROM EXPERIENCE...

Here are the 2 coils:

The snap tang is on the outside on the vertical, the snap tang is on the top on the horizontal.

This puts ign/start/run on the same side of either plug.

CD3 (I'm guessing capacitive discharge) is in the same spot on both plugs.

CD1 and CD2 are inverted.

There are only 3 coils in this pack so they fire once on the exhaust stroke also.

CD3 is actually for hole 2 and 6 which can be inverted and run fine. Any wire on the left can be exchanged to the right and run identical.

If you have one pack and it is working (vert or horiz) you can exchange 3 and 4 wires with 1 and 5 and run the other pack. It will screw with the diagrams you might have saved but will work trust me it is running.

The only thing I don't know yet is does CD1 run holes 1 and 5 or 3 and 4. I know CD3 is for 2 and 6.

So there you have it. Not night and day but there is a difference and they can be exchanged if you don't mind moving 4 wires  :)

The part number crosses over to some 3.0's, some 3.8's and some 4.2's. Mine is off a 2000 3.0 flex

I found out the contacts on my original coil pack (vertical plug) to be corroded, so I wound up getting a new one with the horizontal connector without knowing there was much difference.

As said in post #1, they definitely cannot be swapped while keeping the same firing order. The truck will not run. The vertical coil pack I've found is for the 3.0 engine and the horizontal is for the 4.0 engine. They are also used on other non-ranger engines but I don't know which ones for sure.

I am using that coil pack now by swapping the outside wires end for end, keeping them on their respective banks. The two wires being swapped explains why the documentation I could find says the 4.0 and 3.0 have the same firing order and plug wire location, but oddly the packs themselves are different for reasons unknown.

I find it odd that the coil packs are in fact not directly interchangable, despite them being listed as such on sites like Rockauto.
