Just had a thought from my other thread.

I have a 1996 4R70W 2WD trans from an expo, in super shape.

I have a 1997 4R70W 4WD from a Mountaineer, was a good trans but has been outside for 2 years.

I'm not afraid to tear a trans apart and I now need a 4WD trans.

I heard the only difference is the tail shaft, any chance I could just pull them both apart and use the best parts from both and make a good 4wd trans?

yes sure you can
The output shaft is different RWD vs 4WD
The output shaft is the first part that gets installed for a rebuild

A good working transmission is the easiest and best way to rebuild them. You can replace the wear items and hard parts without having to mess with the valve body
The valve body can be upgraded with all the sonnax updates while it is out
You can also upgrade the 96-97 trans to the 98+ style hard wiring and solenoids, a more robust setup. requires a small amount of wiring on the truck side of things.
There is alot of good info out there about refreshing a 4r70w (AOD-EW) they are alot easier to deal with then the complex V6 autos like the 4r55e....

I'm going to take the 4wd trans apart first, it might not be that bad. It wasn't underwater just had an open filler hole.

I need some time, have any you can give me? I'll pay shipping LOL.

Yes as soon as I finish the next 27 projects I will have a small window of time I can ship off........
LMFAO

the filler hole goes directly into the pan, so unless the pan filled with water you maybe in good shape. The inside of the trans SHOULD have a nice coating of ATF everywhere so the water wont damage anything
However just a few drops of water can destroy a auto trans it destroys the glue that holds the friction material to the bands......less chance of any damage with the trans just sitting outside.
