yes sure you can The output shaft is different RWD vs 4WD The output shaft is the first part that gets installed for a rebuild A good working transmission is the easiest and best way to rebuild them. You can replace the wear items and hard parts without having to mess with the valve body The valve body can be upgraded with all the sonnax updates while it is out You can also upgrade the 96-97 trans to the 98+ style hard wiring and solenoids, a more robust setup. requires a small amount of wiring on the truck side of things. There is alot of good info out there about refreshing a 4r70w (AOD-EW) they are alot easier to deal with then the complex V6 autos like the 4r55e....
